Online Print Shop clone?

Everyone remembers Broderbund Software's The Print Shop from the 80s. I am looking for a similar desktop publishing experience today. Pixelated fonts, limited clip art, and quarter page greeting cards. Is there a webapp out there that will let me do this sort of thing? Again, I'm looking for super basic functionality.

Help me learn how to collaborate with programmers!

Hi everyone, I will soon be working on a project that involves the development of a web platform and will be hiring part-time engineers. I would like to know enough about programming and web development to be able to collaborate with them and understand the language, and have realistic expectations of when things get built. So I am not looking to learn how to program (I wish I had time for that), but rather have a basic understanding of how the system works and fits together (front-end, back-end, etc.) Anyone know of any good online resources- online courses, websites, etc. for this type of knowledge? I've checked out Code Academy and Khan Academy, but both seem heavily focused on helping you learn how to write code vs. understanding the system abstractly and holistically. But I may have missed something. Thanks in advance for your help!

Can I make the web have pages? No, really!

I want to read web sites by flipping through a series of letter-size pages (like you do with PDFs), instead of scrolling one long page. Right now I'm just printing sites as PDFs and reading them in Acrobat, but is there a way to make the browser do it instead? [more inside]

How can I replicate the experience of the mid-90s web for a curious Generation Z tweenager?

Does such thing as an early web emulator exist? My 12 year-old stepson is learning HTML and CSS, and today I was trying to describe the web of yesteryear (for me, c. 1995-96). I'd love to show some visual aids. I have googled to no avail. [more inside]

Can someone name that show for me?

Longshotfilter: I wanted to know what was the name of the show back in the 90's, that featured a final episode (or I think it was) based around this computer web system with a female voice. She was the mainscreen representing what we now know as the WWW and this came pretty much before the web went completely commercial. She instructed some teen to disconnect her because the human population was dying and there were only two left. Does anyone remember?

Need an alternative to MyHQ for my homepage(s).

Need to find an alternative to MyHQ.com. MyHQ is a web-based homepage that is simply lists of links that you can add to, customize, and organize into categories. You set it as your homepage, and voila!, every place you regularly visit on the internet is right in front of you. Their site is currently down, which has happened before, but this time I fear its for reals. I am literally lost without it (not to mention the 100+ organized links that I no longer have access to). How can I create a social networking site?

How can I create a social networking site? I am in Southern California (Inland Empire/Orange County) and interested in building a social networking/message board/blog site along the lines of Sermo or Metafilter that isn't really about customizable media and meeting friends, as much as it is for people within a certain specialty, let's say the veterinary community, to share their ideas about their expertise with peers, receive newsletters relevant to their work, and ask for their peers' opinions or advice. Help me pick a suitable wiki

What recommendations do you have for an intranet wiki? I need: - page-level access controls - a simple calendar of events (birthdays, travel dates, etc) - written in PHP I love MediaWiki, but there is no concept of private pages (there is a plugin script that supports it, but I want something in the core to ease upgrades). I've also checked out Wackowiki which looks good, but doesn't seem to have any calendar integration. Any suggestions?

Gullible is not in the dictionary

I'm using FireFox 1.07 for Windows XP. Previously, when I typed "dict [word]" into the address bar, FireFox would take me to the dictionary.com definition for [word]. Now typing in the same command just takes me to the first result of a Google search for "dict [word]," the same as if I typed anything into the address bar. Recently all my Firefox bookmarks disappeared as well. I haven't updated Firefox or changed anything that I know of. What happened, and how do I restore the old functionality?

How Did You Learn What You Know About Computers/the Internet?

I am taking a brain-painful networking class (hint: it's all about the routers, baby!) and the studying is intense. It's hard, but I'm holding my own. I see questions here on AskMe that bring really cool answers from lots of folks, with a lot of repeat answerers, which leads me to ask, How Did You Learn What You Know About Computers/the Internet? Was it in school? Did you apprentice with someone who had m4d sk1lz? Did you teach yourself? Other?

Browsers with Word-Wrap

Browser questions: (1) are there any browsers that have word-wrap options? I find that when I read certain pages, specifically Usenet via Google Groups, each line runs way past the edge of the screen, and I have to scroll to the right to read. (2) Are there any browsers that have word-wrap options for print? I'm tired of having to remember to set orientation to landscape so the right edge of text doesn't get cut off. [more inside]
