All of a sudden since yesterday my computer has been practically unusable. I originally thought that Windows Defender was going crazy because everything had ground to a halt but I could still see it accessing files via the resource monitor. I eventually killed it, but nothing improved. I'm starting to think my hard drive is dying but I've never had a problem like this before. [more inside]
I'm looking for any online stores with good ratings that will build custom computers. As in you pick out all the specific parts you want (case, motherboard, cooling, storage, etc..) and they build it for you. I thought about doing it myself but i just don't know enough about it all to do that yet. I know that NCIX does what i'm wanting but i've heard a mixture of bad and good reviews so i'm not sure if i should go with them or not.

I got my notice from Windows the other day, notifying me that I am eligible to upgrade my system to Windows 10 for free. The full version will download automatically at the end of July. I guess it's legit, but is it? and is it a good idea? Details inside. [more inside]
Hi everybody. I'm not very computer literate, so please bear with me as I'm counting on your indulgence. For whatever reason, using Google Chrome as my default browser on my personal laptop (MacBook Pro, by the off-chance it matters) has resulted in a situation wherein my personal searches wind up on my "History" when I use Google Chrome at work (different computer). I most certainly never chose that. While I have nothing to hide per se, I don't appreciate this breach of privacy, and haven't been able to figure out how to undo that. If I have to simply stop using Google Chrome I'll do so, but is there another way? Thanks in advance.
So, my 15mo old daughter poured a cup of coffee in my 2011 Mac Book Pro, and now the keyboard and none of the ports work. I am trying to figure out what to replace it with, if anything (at the moment). [more inside]
My Dell desktop has Win 8 (with Classic Shell). I can download Win 8.1 for free from the Windows Store. Requesting pros and cons for doing this, please.
I have a solid foundation in computer programming (and theory) but have been mostly out of this field for several years, and not developing my skills. Assume I'm putting in the time and focus to really master something new. What language or technology (or area of application?) in programming could I master that would give me the best shot at becoming a valuable freelance contractor and making a living? Something rare and valuable (or which there's high demand for regardless) which works with being freelance. Your guidance would be appreciated Internets.
I would like to learn computer programming online, what websites/courses would you suggest? [more inside]
I'm a software developer with several years of experience under my belt. Lately, I've been working with lots of Java code, but have very little formal Java training. Unfortunately, most of the resources that I've found seem to target people with little/no programming experience OR lots of basic Java experience. Can anybody recommend books or other resources that teach Java, from the perspective of a developer who is already experienced with OOP and other C-style languages? [more inside]
I finally broke down and got a Macbook Air today. In trying to use Mac Migration Assistant to move files from my PC to the Mac, I went with best practices and connected them with an Ethernet cable. They can't seem to see each other. They see each other fine on my wifi (estimated wifi transfer time: 89 hrs), and both the Ethernet cable and the Mac Ethernet converter are working. Hope me, hive mind!
This is not my strong suit and I want to avoid being misleading. I have narrowed down to two formats, and I need help picking one. I have over-analyzed this to the point that I can't even figure out what I prefer. [more inside]

I was sitting in bed with my laptop about an hour ago. When I reached out to tap my partner's arm, we both felt a buzzing, dragging feeling - like touching the handle of a turned-on electric razor or something - and pulled back from each other. This only ever happens with MY laptop, regardless of what my partner is doing/holding/touching. [more inside]

Our organization recently bought a new file server (running Server 2012), but the old server probably has a few years of life remaining in it. I'd like to place the old server at the opposite end of the building and use it to host real-time backups through the LAN. [more inside]
I am super hard on keyboards. I have killed 2 fancy ergonomic ones and more cheap keyboards than I can count in the past 4 years so I have decided to splurge on a nice mechanical keyboard, that can hopefully stand up to my destructive ways, well that and I really like the clicky clacky sensation when I type that you don't seem to get on modern keyboards. I have read various forums & even an old question on the green and all I have done is confuse myself so looking for some suggestions. Thanks. [more inside]

I've decided to switch over completely to Google Chrome, and on my work laptop it's NBD. My home laptop, however, asks me EVERY DAMN TIME I START CHROME if I want to make it my default browser; clicking OK does nothing (Firefox is still the default). More inside... [more inside]

Specifically, it's a mplayer virus. It has infected Google Chrome and Firefox, and is showing infuriating pop-up ads and frequently redirecting the browser to ad-like pages. Who knows what else it's doing/stealing/collecting. This may be what I deserve for trying to download some TV, but I need to get rid of it. Running Mac OSX 10.8.5. [more inside]
I make my students submit their assignments (for college writing classes) by uploading them as PDFs to our course management system. Sometimes students submit broken or un-openable files. My question is, how do I tell the difference between a real PDF file that became corrupted somewhere along the line and a fake corrupted PDF file created by a student who didn't do the assignment and wants an excuse? As a post-Masters student in a technical discipline -- computer-science-related -- I find myself wishing to fill in knowledge gaps from courses that I took in school. I'm looking for one, long, comprehensive text on Machine Learning (or several shorter texts) from which to self-teach the whole ML process from beginning to end. Topics of interest would be - supervised, unsupervised and semi-supervised learning - clustering, classification etc. Having already delved into Manning's 'Foundations of Statistical Natural Language Processing' in school I feel I've a decent knowledge of SVMs, perceptrons, clustering, (H)MMs, etc. but I'd like to learn more about general algorithm design, ML and how it has evolved over the years. Thanks! :)
I would like my friends & family who are not G+ members (and do not want to be) to be able to view my Picasaweb albums as in the past. I have searched several forums like google's downgrade, but find no definitive answers. If I delete my Google+ profile can I email the link to my friends/family? I do not want to lose my Gmail account.

Daughter has again introduced liquids to the innards of a laptop computer. This time a 1.5 y/o Macbook Pro. She wiped it off, assumed it was fine, but then it slowly and inevitably died. She is showing up at my house in a few days with the still-viable hard drive, which the Apple Store removed for her. I have a 3 terabite external hard drive and a Macbook Pro. Can someone tell, or link me to how to get her files off her hard drive and onto this external drive? [more inside]

Which of these laptops should I get? It is a personal preference or is one better than the other? This will be mostly used for business. But I will be taking it home with me in the evenings and it will be my main primary laptop for everyday use. Both laptops have 8 GB ram, 256 SSD hard drives. 15" screens. The Lenovo has a optical drive and more ports. The Macbook Pro doesn't have an optical drive and only two USB ports.

StatFilter: Would anybody be able to recommend a good introduction to the statistical computing language "R" that a reasonably quantitatively-adept psychologist might be able to work through on his own? Something like a step-by-step book or textbook with exercises would be great to help me become more fluent in R. (My colleagues at work who use R are primarily computer scientists who either first learned MatLab or are brilliant autodidacts when it comes to learning different scripting languages, and thus don't have any suggestions; Googling has mostly proferred a somewhat obscurely structured guide from the R authors and lots of invocations to just learn on my own, somehow...). I've become familiar with how to do many individually useful tasks in data structuring and analysis, but I feel a bit like a very high-functioning tourist who has learned a lot of phrases to get around but who would be lost and mugged in an alleyway if I strayed off the beaten path.
I have satellite internet service with a monthly download/upload allowance of 15 GB. I am a heavy Microsoft Office user.
