Asking for a friend: There is an online grading platform that apparently only runs on Java 6, but he has a mid-year 2012 MacBook Pro unibody (13") and it came with Java 7 installed. He needs to be able to enter grades at home, which means he needs Java 6. Both of us are good with technology (and searched Google for information), but the links we found often referred to computers where Java 6 was installed, and then was replaced with Java 7. Help? After having to show some production employees where the SHIFT key is and why you would use it, I'm starting to wonder if there's a test out there, preferably web-based and cheap or free, that would put a potential hire through some paces and test for speed and accuracy on doing basic tasks. I leave for a two week stay in China (Beijing), on Friday. I would like to take a laptop with me. I have heard however, that there is a significant risk of becoming infected with malware or spyware. Is this true? I will not have the laptop on me at all times. [more inside]
I have two things that needs to be fixed, although it's not super urgent. first, the usb jack on my external hard drive came loose, and I can't access data inside. I'm fairly sure all I need is a re-soldering job. I also want to get rid of my old laptop. It's an HP pavillion dv4, and it works mostly fine but occasionally blue screens. I was going to sell on craigslist, but I don't want all of my data in there when I sell. But every time I try to clear out everything, the computer blue screens on me. Where in Toronto (downtown or Annex) can I get these two things done as cheaply as possible?
I backed up the contents of my ASUS UL50VT laptop in 2011 to my Seagate external hard drive using their Memeo software. In 2012, I connected the Seagate again and ran a second backup, and it created a separate folder where it stored all the new files I'd gained since the previous time. So far, so good. Now when I try to back it up again, it has started from scratch--duplicating the entire contents of my 450 GB laptop to a third folder. I'm gonna use up all my hard drive space this way, stat. Any way to make it back up only the new files again, like it did before?

For a research project, we’re asking ~24 high school and college students to log their experiences with homework by sending us text messages and photos over the course of about two weeks. Is there a site where they can send those messages so that we could see them from a computer? There are particular features we’re seeking... What comes closest to satisfying them? [more inside]

My Macbook Air was stolen this afternoon, with my gmail accounts open in browser windows. I logged out of all locations and changed passwords, requested a new credit card, and am planning to open new bank accounts (because I'd downloaded bank statements on a couple of occasions). What else should I do? Is there anything I can do remotely to track or wipe the computer if I (stupidly) hadn't installed anything to do that? What should I do to protect my work computer from the same fate? Thank you for your help!
I have an older MacBook I use when travelling (four or five times a year), and then the odd occasion when I am away from my office desktop. The battery on the MacBook died a few months ago, and I am guessing partially because I haven't been using it frequently enough. I am hesitant to replace the battery, figuring the same thing will happen again, is that right? Is there a downside to not having a working battery on the computer itself? And lastly, is there a problem with leaving the dead battery in the computer?
At work I have a laptop (running Windows XP) that connects to the Internet via WiFi. Two other coworkers sit next to and across from me, and they connect the same way. About a year ago, we started experiencing connectivity problems. [more inside]

I have a friend who has become totally reliant on an e-mail account, which was provided by an internet service provider which she has just left to go to a new ISP. She uses Outlook 2003 as her e-mail client program. Unfortunately, she is now finding that after moving to this new ISP that although she can receive e-mails absolutely fine, she cannot send e-mails. My son's PC, a dual boot Ubuntu / Win 7 box that I built myself about 3 years ago will not boot. It was working fine last night. When you power up the CPU fan runs for less than a second then shuts down and nothing else happens. The motherboard LED does stay lit, so there is some power getting to the board. Am I correct in guessing that replacing the power supply is my most likely route to a fix?
I deleted a gmail draft that I didn't mean to. Is there a way to get it back? Thanks.
I need to rephotograph some stuff off a computer monitor and I love the texture of the screens in this clip from Moneyball, especially in the extreme close ups and player head shots. The visible honeycomb of pixels is what I'm interested in. I've shot stuff off a Cinema Display (no visible pixels really) and broadcast monitor (visible but rectangular) before and it doesn't look like this. Any idea what kind of monitor or LCD looks like this?

I dropped off my computer to be repaired because it kept powering off randomly, and often before windows could even start booting. They told me it was a faulty power supply, which they replaced. I received a call about fifteen minutes after I got home from a tech there telling me that they forgot to plug my DVD drive into the power supply, and that I can bring it back and have them fix it. When I ran it at home, I noticed google chrome was missing. Another one of my programs doesn't work now, telling me that "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable." 3-4 other programs that I've picked at random and tried to run work fine. I bought a netbook a couple of years ago and have probably used it a total of eight times since. I just resold it on Amazon and am now preparing to ship it off. I understand that under normal circumstances it's advisable to wipe the hard disc and then reinstall the operating system. My netbook has no CD drive and therefore no operating system CD. I'm told the operating system may be embedded in another disc but I don't have the savvy or patience to figure it out. [more inside]

They are programmed on separate computers and I've been told by techy friends and Apple store employees that if I connect my old ipod to my new computer then it may erase all of the data. I don't want to take that risk. Is there a program that will transfer all of my music from my old ipod nano to my new classic ipod (without erasing my nano's drive)? Thank you!!
