Hi MeFi, I am looking for someone or a shop that does custom PC builds. I do a lot of multimedia production (video editing, motion media/rendering, audio production, etc) and I would love to give my money to a smaller shop/person versus going through Dell/HP/etc. I will gladly buy all the parts I need, I just need someone with experience to assemble it all. I heard APC Integrated in Boston is pretty good but they can get pretty booked. Any other spots? Thanks in advance!

Most of my knowledge of CS is fairly practical. Now I want to spend a few hours a week re-learning CS core subject matter to deepen my understanding. [more inside]

What I really want is an 8TB hard drive with an ethernet port on the back side. The Intel NUC is almost right but it only supports a 2.5" drive at best. Is there a product that does what I want? It must run Linux but doesn't need to be particularly fast.

My vintage 2008 Macbook is eagerly gazing at the pasture that has been beckoning it for a few years now. I have replaced the hard-drive and maxed out the RAM, but the poor little guy is simply ready for a well-deserved rest. So - what's next for me and when? Macbook Pro? Air? iMac? iPad? Difficulty level: incorporating moderate music production, Netflix, general web use, somewhat limited funds, and massive over-thinking. [more inside]

Back in '93, Disney had a game for DOS called Coaster. You get a track editor, build and ride it in 3D, then it gets rated by some riders. Is there anything close to something like this in terms of game play for Android that's available now? Nicer graphics would be a plus.

In the current MacBook Pro lineup, there's a $100 dollar price jump between the 2.9Ghz i5 processors and 3.1 Ghz i7 processors on the 128GB and 256GB models, but a $200 difference for the same upgrade on the 512GB model, all other specs remaining the same. Is there any reason for this, aside from Apple deciding that people willing to spend that much simply won't mind paying another $100?
My mother was a secondary school teacher, and roughly 15-20 years ago I was reading a book of hers that involved a classroom game or experiment or lesson where each child in the class followed a set of individual instructions, passing information around to other kids and making decisions and so on. The net result of all of this was that the whole classroom would end up effectively running a program to play a game - I *think* it was noughts and crosses, but it was a reasonably complex program with maybe 20 separate sets of instructions for different people. My lab is trying to replace a computer (Pentium 4, Windows 2000) that controls, and gets data from, a large mechanical testing machine. The problem is, the software needs this PCI 2.0 (possibly 2.1 or 2.2) data capture card on the computer. We can't make purchases from ebay or amazon, so that limits buying a used computer. Are there any new computers that have legacy PCI slots? Or is my only option building a pc that has a motherboard with legacy slots?
I'm looking for a computer that does not have any way to connect to the internet and I can use for word processing and editing. It would be mainly for poetry. It would be great if there was a way to then transfer what I'd written to a different computer. I seem to do my best writing in Microsoft Word/Google Docs, but distractions and poor self control tend to hurt my productivity. Is there a computer out there without any bells and whistles?

A direct report of mine complains of having a slow work laptop, but I noticed he was running BOINC, and I advised him to stop. He was working remotely today, and his computer was running flat out with the fan running at hand-dryer temperatures. At the end of the day, I opened it up, and saw he was running BOINC again, at 100% CPU load for his college computing team. Am I being a hopeless old fuddy-duddy in expecting him to cut that right out? [more inside]

Yesterday, I started noticing that Windows is freezing for maybe a half-second every minute or so. Ordinarily it's not noticeable, but during videos or games it causes sound to catch for the duration ("...and so the solution to the pRRRRRRRoblem is..."), and sometimes video playback to glitch. Anyone have an idea what's going on? [more inside]
We are working on simple machine language in computer science for data manipulation. All the other problems I have gotten through but this last one. Here is the problem: "Write a short program in machine language to perform requested activity. Assume the program is placed in memory starting at address 00- -If the value stored in memory location 44 is 00, then place the value 01 in memory location 46; otherwise, put the value FF in memory location 46." I have a 2-year-old MacBook Pro with a 500 GB SSD running Yosemite. It was fine until 3 days ago, when the computer slowed to a crawl. I rebooted several times; each time, it got slow again.
