I have several hundred files and folders who don't share names, but do share numbers. I'm looking for an automated solution to put the files in the folders that share the same numbers. Windows 7. [more inside]
What are your suggestions for the best tiny PC kit that I can run Windows on? I'm talking about ones that are under 8" square. [more inside]
After some research I have decided to buy this laptop, which has great specs for the price - but multiple reviews (like this one) say that while it's a good computer, it's "full of bloatware, which takes time (or a fresh Windows installation) to clean up." I barely even know what that means, much less how to actually go about doing it. [more inside]
WindowsFilter: All of a sudden, a super fast "MS-DOS"-like process has emerged that begins and quickly ends on my Windows 10 desktop. It seems to be encountering an error of some kind, near as my speed-reading can detect. I have no idea what this process is, and it happens every 30 minutes or so. If I am in a fullscreen program, it kicks me out to the desktop, sometimes disrupting or occasionally crashing the program. How do I best diagnose and solve this problem? [more inside]
My macbook is from 2009. I haven't followed Apple news/updates for many years now so I am at a loss on how to prioritize the options available. [more inside]
For several months now the media players on my PC "skip" when playing music. At first I thought it was just WMP but it's happened on iTunes and JRiver Media Jukebox as well. This PC is a Dell, about three years old, and replacing it just isn't going to happen this year. I've reinstalled audio drivers, even reinstalled Windows 10. All to no avail. [more inside]
About a year ago I made the mistake of building a computer myself. One motherboard and 12 months later, I have a crash that happens consistently in Windows but never in Linux. [more inside]
I'm connecting to a laptop HD with an enclosure and trying to recover some files from it. The highest priority are the owner's Firefox bookmarks and saved passwords, since apparently some of those passwords are unknown beyond being saved in this Firefox install. I would just boot the HD, log into Windows, and go look, but while it's perfectly mountable, Windows becomes unresponsive after a short time of trying to actually run from the drive. What files do I need to be looking at, and how do I actually use them?
In the past, every time I've upgraded Windows (3.11 to 95 to 97 to XP to 7) I've done a clean install. For the first time, I'm considering upgrading (to Windows 10) with an in-place (overwrite) installation, not a clean install. My Windows 7 has been acting badly lately, probably due to various registry cruft. Does an in-place install take care of that, or is all the registry cruft carried over, and should I do a clean install instead? (A clean install would involve many hours more work)
Fixing a computer for a church friend. I'd like to easily create a bootable usb stick from my other computers... windows and mac... but everything I've read makes it seem like a daunting process. Is there a utility out there to easily burn a rescue usb stick ? thanks.
I'm looking for suggestions for re-purposing a Windows laptop into a child-friendly PC (for a 6-year-old), for entertainment and development of computer skills. Suggestions for Windows settings and/or child-friendly shells, parental controls, age-appropriate software, and any other ideas for getting the most out of a young child's first computer. I recently had an SSD installed and upgraded to Windows 64-bit, which sped my mid-2011 27" iMac up dramatically. It's extremely exciting--I'd assumed I'd have to buy a new machine this year. Are there any other helpful tips out there for getting the most out of this nice piece of equipment and prolonging its lifespan? [more inside]
I'm looking for a new Windows laptop, but pretty much everything that I've tried out has a keyboard that just suuuuuucks for me. Please hope me find something I won't detest typing on? Because, um, typing strings of words in succession is sometimes relevant to my interests. [more inside]
I need a new or refurbished Windows computer. Please help me to choose one. [more inside]
I'm an idiot. I had Applecare come out and fix a display issue, and then I asked the guy to diagnose my HD. He spoke little English, and my Korean is very, very poor (I'm in Seoul). He said it's old, so just replace it. I said okay, with little thought. [more inside]
I would like to rename some files with long file names. I'd be happy deleting them. I'm using Windows 8(.?) They're in the "Music" folder. I don't know whether that complicates things. Things that haven't worked: [more inside]
Yesterday, I started noticing that Windows is freezing for maybe a half-second every minute or so. Ordinarily it's not noticeable, but during videos or games it causes sound to catch for the duration ("...and so the solution to the pRRRRRRRoblem is..."), and sometimes video playback to glitch. Anyone have an idea what's going on? [more inside]
Suggestions for lightweight 11" laptop? Need to have: full keyboard, Windows, able to handle large and complex Excel files and long Word docs, good internet connection, reliable performance, decent battery life, good for both work and for netflix-type activities, reliable use with external monitor. After a lemon of an HP, reliability is important. What should I expect to pay for this? Which one should I get? [more inside]
I have an Envy Dv7 laptop which I love. It is out of warranty, and a call to HP yielded no help as far as diagnosing the problem. I kept getting bounced from tech support to warranty to sales to someone else. The call lasted about an hour and eventually I had to give up as I had to leave for a flight. I'm buying a new Windows laptop computer after years of using a Mac desktop and enough has changed that I have no idea what to look for these days. I'd really like to run Dragon Age Inquisition on it (here's the specs for that) and I'd really like to buy it from someone reliable. [more inside]
I recently purchased a new desktop PC running a clean install of Windows 7, without any other software installed. What should I know or prepare for before I get started with daily consumer use? [more inside]
This is going back to this question where I'm dealing with obsolete computer equipment. This weekend's discovery was a laptop at least 10 years old, a desktop computer of over 5 years not running on a Windows system, and another desktop over 5 years running on Windows Vista. [more inside]
I used to use Truecrypt to encrypt little enclosures so I wouldn't have to worry about my files so much when I, say, put them on a USB stick or backed them up to the cloud. There was a whole... thing with Truecrypt and now it's hard to say if I should use it anymore. Is there another program that's going to work well for this purpose? [more inside]
Our organization recently bought a new file server (running Server 2012), but the old server probably has a few years of life remaining in it. I'd like to place the old server at the opposite end of the building and use it to host real-time backups through the LAN. [more inside]

I've very recently (ie yesterday) got myself a brand new desktop PC! I would really like your advice on the best ways to keep it running at its best, protected from the nasty things that lurk on the internet (virii, malware, spyware etc) and set up to get the most out of our blossoming relationship... The machine runs on Windows 8. [more inside]

I maintain a PC for a user who has dementia and who breaks the computer in short order. So I installed DeepFreeze (thanks AskMe) and it has worked great, but now they turn off the computer without shutdown so it eventually blue screens and won't boot at all. What can I do to make the system impervious to turning off without shutdown? I'd like to stay with Windows if possible for a number of unrelated reasons, though open to Linux if there is no other option assuming it can be "frozen" cfg and remote management.
My dad passed away on Friday, and my mom is eager to get into his computer (Song Vaio running Windows 7) and Blackberry (Bold). Both are password protected. Is there any way to change the password on each without wiping the data? I'm fairly computer literate, and my father will have every software disk he's ever received. We also have access to his email if that helps with the Blackberry. Thanks.
Hi, I have 1 keyboard, 1 mouse, and two desktop computers to use with a 3-monitor setup. I would like to know the best way to use a triple monitor setup where I can click a button and switch back and forth between desktop A and desktop B for the single keyboard/mouse and the monitors. Consolidating files onto one machine is not an option. Are there devices or hubs I could plug the keyboard/mouse/monitors and desktops into that can do this? Amazon links would be great.
This morning I was working on my computer, and stopped to take a break for lunch. I left my computer on--it generally goes to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity. When I returned from lunch, my computer had unexpectedly shut down and had to be rebooted. Once it restarted, I noticed that it had updated several programs that have been prompting me for updates, like iTunes and Firefox. (I had purposefully not been updating them.) My computer requires permission from me to update programs like this, and it has never updated programs without that permission. Any thoughts as to what might have happened this time? [more inside]
My Windows 7 PC (HP H8-1300z) has been working quite fine for the past 2 years but it recently began acting up and I can't figure out why. Everytime I attempt to do a copy/paste (backup) with large volume of folders from one drive to another (external) the PC freezes. The fan also randomly goes crazy for a minute or two and then stops. The current external hard drive I have is "WD' brand that I got at best buy and I'm not happy with it. I am looking for a external hard drive that is easy to use for someone not that great with computers and I can back up my computer with it, that has the ability to be encrypted, is reliable, is ideally available locally at a place like best buy, must have a metal case, not a plastic one (the one I have now heats up and smells like burning plastic) Also bonus points if it has a fan in it. I have a PC not a mac, so it should be for a PC. Also I am not sure if I want to but one of those large external hard drives you leave attached or the smaller pocket sized one so any pro's and con's of both would be great.
I have a Samsung NC20 laptop that I bought 4 or 5 years ago. It runs Windows XP and has some sort of malware, IRP Hook, that AVG has found but cannot remove. In addition, it runs significantly slower than I would like, and cannot play most videos at all--the sound plays fine, but the image just staggers and jumps. [more inside]

My computer started crashing to a black screen a few minutes into any new game. I just got payday 2, and 4-5 minutes into the introductory map my computer would crash to a black screen, I thought it was the game, so then I tried the other new game I just gotten, Saints Row IV, same thing, it let me play for like 10 minutes then the same crash to black screen. My computer locks up at nine every night. Well, sometimes as early as 8:30. The mouse acts as though it's very nearly out of batteries, (i.e. sits still for minutes on end, doesn't register clicks) and the keyboard doesn't record any keystrokes for long stretches, then types out doubles of every letter. However, if a video is playing, it continues flawlessly, and no processes show 100% utilization. Nor do the performance tab or network tab on the Task Manager show any spikes. [more inside]
