Private internet connection as part of anti-virus software

The latest version of my anti-virus software includes a new "Phantom VPN" function, which, when active, creates a "private connection" to a "virtual location in the USA." When active, it lists a "% used" statistic determined by a ratio of KB to MB. For example, right now it tells me I'm using "0%", or "219.38kb KB of 500MB Secured Traffic" I would like to know: A) In terms of security, what does a private/Phantom VPN connection accomplish, and is it worth using every time I connect to the internet? B) What does "% used" have to do with functionality? Is the percent KB/MB something I need to pay attention to? Thanks

Looking for "horror stories" of computer virus infections

I need to put the fear of God into some foolish, negligent users. I'm looking for examples of organizations that were hit with some kind of horrible malware (like CryptoLocker) or had sensitive data stolen -- all because of a really stupid action by an employee. [more inside]

Cell phone and computer for elderly, increasingly fuzzy relative

I'm travelling to help an elderly relative (in pain, sciatica, on pain meds) who is 83 and fuzzing mentally. She has been pretty good with computers for years, but is having trouble maintaining her PC. I thought an iPhone would be easier but she hasn't taken to it. So I'm looking for some kind of ultra simple phone (few features, big buttons, I doubt she'll text), and a replacement computer. [more inside]

Help Me Keep My New PC Happy, Healthy and Safe From Harm

I've very recently (ie yesterday) got myself a brand new desktop PC! I would really like your advice on the best ways to keep it running at its best, protected from the nasty things that lurk on the internet (virii, malware, spyware etc) and set up to get the most out of our blossoming relationship... The machine runs on Windows 8. [more inside]

What's wrong with my machine?

I've got a 4 year old Windows desktop that I use for very few things: Metafilter (using either Chrome or Firefox), email (Thunderbird), Word, and NVivo (a qualitative analysis software). I also play Steam games on the machine occasionally. I went on vacation, and when I came back, the computer was - for lack of a better term - completely messed up. [more inside]

Help, I think I've installed a virus

Setting up a new computer for my mother and stepfather I've accidentally installed a virus. After three hours of slogging through getting a new computer set up for them (why would we write down any of our passwords, the old now dead computer had them all saved) I tired and not paying attention downloaded Firefox for them. Problem: It wasn't from Mozilla, didn't realize until afterward that it was from something called ez-download. Internet says this is a Trojan. I've turned off the wifi and have windows defender running a scan. There is nothing on this computer from a software standpoint that needs to be saved. Computer didn't come with a windows8 disc but rather a partioned drive. If I run a reset to factory will that be easiest? Will it work? Halp!

My computer isn't working properly

I went away for the weekend and when I returned this is what I get everytime I try to access the internet. Can't use google at all so IE is my only option. I'm freaking out a bit. I keep getting pop ups from "System Progressive Protection" that is trying to sell me stuff but I'm not buying into what I see as a scam. Every program I open is said to be infected. Everything was fine 3 days ago. It won't even let me Skype. Help, please Ignore warnings and visit that site in the current state (not recommended). [more inside]

Beam me up

So, I have nearly a terabyte of photos of my daughter stored on a computer which has been taken over by tr/crypt.xpack.gen (if that is your real name). It would probably be best that I store the photos on some sort of server somewhere (clouds?), but I know nothing of such things. Any advice on online storage, computer security, and not shooting in raw would be greatly appreciated. Please help, as we would rather not have to force my daughter back in the womb to recreate the photos of her birth. [more inside]

things to do in phoenix when your computer is dead

I'm looking for a reputable computer repair shop in the Phoenix, AZ area. I lent my Compaq laptop (running vista) out to a friend and now it's totally owned by virii, and I don't have the time, patience, wherewithal to fix this level of problem. Is there a good, independent (not Best Buy) place in town to get this looked at and potentially fixed for a reasonable price? Again, I'm not interested in fixing it myself, I'd rather pay someone else to be frustrated for me.
