As of recently I've been really into non-fiction about the Internet, computers, hacking, or any combination of those things. I like the behind the scenes look at these technologies and the cultures surrounding them, but also that they're presented in layman's terms. Some books/articles that I've enjoyed and fit this bill have been: Ghost in the Wires by Kevin Mitnick, How Music Became Free by Stephen Witt, The Dark Net by Jamie Bartlett, and this Wired article about The Silk Road (Part 2). Could you direct me to some more books and articles like these?
I've been thinking a lot about empathy and the way we communicate on the Internet. What research, studies, books, articles, etc. should I be reading? Special snowflake requirements: I studied Psych 101, so it's gotta be on my damn fool BA in English level of understanding.
This weekend I played one of the Jackbox family of games. I think my family would love them and I'd like to give/have it available to play while we're all home for Christmas. Looks like I might have some technical issues--I need some guidance, please! [more inside]
Now that I've gotten a new domain (thanks guys) I want to modernize and streamline my website. I basically want a single page with ' click to expand' photos that looks good on a tablet. Think a nice restaurant website. I have no idea how to do this, my incredibly creaky HTML skills are at least 15 years out of date, and template / design for you sites like Squarespace all want a hosting bundle package. I just want something drop-dead simple that will export an index.htm file at the end. Does this program/service exist? [more inside]
My wireless network seems to work for every device we have except our actual computer. Please help. [more inside]

A few days ago I got high-speed internet from Comcast. When I placed the order, I was told I needed to upgrade my router and wireless to new models, specifically a TP-Link Wireless N300 and the Motorola SB6121 Surfboard modem. My internet speed is lower than ever. [more inside]
I'm having trouble connecting to the internet or to my cable modem. I just bought a used (Dell, 64-bit) laptop. I've been using a Motorola Surfboard SB1501U cable modem plugged in through ethernet on my old (Acer, 32-bit) laptop. I plugged it into the Dell and it immediately connected to the internet. There was a couple of other unrelated issues though, but there is no factory reset option and I thought I'd start with a clean slate. So, I made an installation disk and reinstalled the OS, W7 for a 64-bit computer. Everything went smoothly. But now I can't connect to the internet, either through the ethernet or the USB and installation disk. [more inside]

I want to have a large number of unique URLs, all pointing to the same content. Like a million of 'em, so we can track individual recipients' behaviors online; one URL (or set of related URLs) per recipient (say we're sending them an email or a postcard with a QR code). [more inside]

Is there a somewhat simple solution to this problem? We recently installed new wireless Internet at home but my laptop (older Toshiba Satellite) refuses to connect to the net. It will automatically find our network and connect to it, but doesn't go that step further to actually connect to the Internet. This only happens with the wireless at home - it works fine with other networks I've tried out. Is my computer just not recognizing the new modem?
AskMefi, my computer is suddenly refusing to connect to the internet. I'm starting to go a little bit nuts. [more inside]

Recently, my computer has decided to be very particular about what it will allow to connect to the internet. Some programs, like uTorrent and Filezilla, can connect fine and have no problems. But things like self-updaters and Flash-based uploading cannot connect. The same thing happens on two different internet connections on two different wireless networks whose configurations have not been changed since before this started (I do not have a wired network to test). I have not made any significant changes to my computer since before this started. I'm running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. What could be causing the problem? How can I fix it? What caused the problem in the first place? [more inside]
Doing some web design after being out of it a long time and my brain isn't in gear. I'm admittedly rusty and oblivious to the latest trends, codes and plugins for designing some of this basic stuff right now. Main goal: if I can make my client's dream site an awesome reality in a quick manner while remaining as lazy as possible, that would be fantastic! ;) [more inside]

I am looking to do a project on the effects of latency on cloud computing, specifically latency impacting on Amazon EC2 virtual machines and I am trying to get my head around it. EC2 is an Infrastructure As A Service cloud product. Unfortunately, I do not have much experience with it. I haven't found alot on the internet on this area; has anyone seen any information on this subject? Could anyone make suggestions about appropriate ways to do latency benchmarking in this area. What kind of things ought I be looking to include in any benchmark tests. How exactly do others go about measuring latency for Amazon EC2. Are there any software tools out there which will help.
I am interested in cloud computing and I am looking for recommendations re interesting and worthy articles and papers on the subject of cloud computing. One area of interest is in how it will change the old-fashioned client-server network model - the status quo. Is outsourcing the network infrastructure really going to produce a dramatic transformation or is it somewhat over-hyped and exagerated.
Why is it suddenly when I hit links to certain sites (io9 etc) it doesn't take me to the article but to the main page and I have to search for the link that I wanted? Is it something I am doing wrong? I am a computer idiot basically so if there is a way to fix this speak slowly to me please. I'm using Chrome 10 btw and from Canada if that makes a difference.
Is there any way to record or download youtube videos for free using some software? Thanks.
Please recommend good websites and blogs about computer/internet/social media security issues, someplace where I can find out about the latest scams, phishing attempts, malware, etc. I don't really like Snopes, due to the pop-under ads (what is up with that, anyway?). Thank you.
