My parents computer crashed. I never determined the cause. It had XP on it. They've since bought a laptop, and want to recover documents from their desktop. They bought a hd enclosure. I connected the hd, and it's recognized, but it seems that the profiles must've been encrypted. I know that it's almost impossible to break the encryption, but want to be helpful, any suggestions? I've just bought a Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Keyboard 7000, which comes with the matching mouse (8000). It works great with my Windows XP computer, as long as the computer is on. Once I switch the computer off and attempt to restart, the Bluetooth connection is lost and the computer won't start, citing the lack of a keyboard as the reason. Only by repeatedly fiddling and resynching can I get the computer started up. Can anyone suggest how I bond these three devices in permanent holy matrimony?

It's time to replace our desktop computer. After threads like this about the sluggishness of Vista, I'd prefer to get XP Pro, but it appears that some vendors, such as HP, only offer Vista. I'd rather not buy a computer with Vista and then install XP. Ideally, the new box would come with XP Pro and include a coupon for Vista that will still be valid in one or two years when Microsoft will presumably gets its act together. Does anyone have such a thing? Thanks and happy holidays! [more inside]

I was messing around with nlite and ended up making some sort of change to my computer that I just can't figure out.
All is basically well except for one thing---
Every time I boot the computer the first menu says something like
"Press 'R' for Standard System Recovery Options "
and then
Press 'F' for reformmting the drive and Q to quit
if i hit R i go to the recovery utility
HAVEN'T tried F for obvious reasons
and Q seems to read the boot ini file.
when i hit Q, my normal boot process works and All is OK.
However all subsequent reboots give me that same R, F and Q menu and I'd like to get back to just booting in to Windows.
Can anyone offer some advice as to how to tell the computer that all is well? i wouldn't want a family member to reboot the computer and select the wrong option.
I'm running Windows XP MCE.

I've taken the role as a graphic designer at a small company, and I also wear the IT hat sometimes. That being said, I'm more of a Mac Guru than (blech) XP. BUT, we have a small file server (40 GB, half full) of data we would like to backup nightly.
#1: What's a good tape drive (or other media) for that much data, with room to grow, of course.
#2: What software?
#3: What's a "typical" backup schedule. I'd prefer just to do incrementals, but how often to rotate tapes/etc...?
Thanks!

I recently purchased an Athlon XP 2400 266 FSB, to replace my Athlon Thunderbird 1.4ghz. Running at 133/133, the processor only shows up as a 1700 running at 1.49ghz. I have an ECS K7S5A with the Cheepoman BIOS (and I've tried this with the latest ECS BIOS as well). I've seen people talking about this combination being okay for them, but I can't for the life of me figure out why this won't recognize it as the right processor and clock speed. Bumping up the CPU speed to 166 causes my system to not boot. I've confirmed through the numbers on the processor itself that it is indeed an Athlon XP 2400. What else could be at fault here?
