How do you sing in Chinese and other tonal languages? Does the music follow the notes as usual but deviate a little bit to express tones (which could explain the sort of warbly psychedelic sound of the Chinese singing I've heard), or does the music itself dictate what tones are used - in which case I'd guess lyrics are mostly limited to flat tones since singing is mostly level notes.

I write and compose music. What I would like to know is what kind of basic equipment do I need to start laying down my own tracks and orchestrating my own stuff? My expensive toy PSR500M Yamaha has just enough bells and whistles to tantalize me as to what is possible to do. I have to start small, as finances are an issue at present.

So, I've decided to start writing songs. What MIDI programs do people recommend for beginners who want to experiment with scoring multiple parts? Ease of use is more important than sound quality, but some room to grow would be nice, as well...
