Looking for recommendations for recent popular music soundtracks

Does anyone have any recommendations for somewhat recent (post-2000) TV or movie popular music soundtracks (or some other kind of compilation)? I tend to like alternative rock, but I'm open to any genre. I've realized that I've been in a musical rut for the past several years, so I'm looking for a fast way to discover new music and expose myself to some of what I've missed. I've gotten the soundtracks to Scrubs and Garden State, and I've found a lot that I like in them, but I'm also almost finished with them.

So, any recommendations?

I am looking for a book that was used as a textbook for an english composition course at Northeastern University in 1999. The book was a compilation of nature essays including Kerouac. I believe the professor was an adjunct at the time who used the book.

Michael Jackson tribute mix?

I'm looking for a mix/compilation of Michael Jackson songs that I heard played recently at a club. It's a single track that combines many of his more popular dance numbers. I know it contained parts of Billie Jean, Thriller, Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, Beat It, and Bad, and there were a few other songs that I don't recall. As far as I can tell, the songs were simply blended together via cross-fades and were not remixed or rerecorded, and the track itself was long--probably at least 10 minutes. Any ideas what I heard and where I can find it?

Technical/compensatory music compilation guidelines.

Technical/compensatory guidelines for creating a music compilation. I would like to put out a music compilation. This wouldn't be a money-making venture. I've already had some bands say they'd like to take part. Now I have to put up or shut up, and the first step is admitting I don't know the technical nuts-&-bolts of putting together a compilation.

For example:

Recording guidelines: Do the bands need to be given any (such as might make things easier for whatever sound engineering comes later)?

Compensation: One band said they usually just get CDs that they can sell or give away, as they choose. Is that typical (especially for non-$-generating projects)?

Any info and experiences would be appreciated. Danke.

music for girls who hate girls?

She's so dull - come on rip her to shreds! (notterriblynicefilter) Hello.
I'm looking for songs to channel my nightmare-flatmate aggression. What is there about righteous girl-on-girl good straight-forward hatred
- about a particular woman (or non-specified person)

- BY WOMEN

- in and around the genres of punk, (old-fashioned) indie, hiphop and rock

that I can jump around to, so I don't have to jump ON anyone? Not particularly about "you stole my man" but that's good if is more aggresive than Jolene-y.
Other general "ooh I really dont like you too much" tunes, also by blokes, very welcome too!

All i have so far:
Blondie, obviously
Libel - Tilt
Solar Race - Drink my piss
and
John Cooper Clarke - Twat

Cheers!!

Help me compile the ultimate stoner playlist. I'm looking for songs that sound fabulous while under the influence, not for songs about weed.

Chilled, loungy tunes
Ska for my girls?

I'm making a compilation CD for my little girls (ages six and three) and I'm looking for happy stuff with female vocalists that has the same sort of vibe as Manu Chao's bongo bong, and/or Sublime's happier stuff, but that is appropriate for, you know, little kids. Thanks for any suggestions! I guess I'm looking for kid-friendly Ska with toasting by female vocalists.

Let There Be Night!

I'm making a compilation of songs about the night- either titles directly pertaining to the night (Night Swimming, The Heart of Saturday Night) or just songs that have 'something of the night' about them- whether soothing, moody, ominous or still.
Large Volume Radio Compilations

I'm looking to find out more about the very large, compiled sets of music that oldies (and presumably other formats as well) stations use. When I was younger, a visit to a radio station, one which also trained high school DJs, had a long series of CDs on its CD rack. These CDs went A - Beatles, Brown through Credence, and so forth. Just this one set consisted of fifty CDs.

This made a lot of sense to me, because many of the oldies stations are playing songs from one hit wonders, and it wouldn't make sense to have a whole bunch of CDs where you only needed one track from the band.

1) What are these kinds of compilations called? Clearly, I'm not using the right search terms.

2) Where can I find listings of these compilations? Do they in fact have them for other formats besides oldies?

3) How can I, as a human being and not a radio station, purchase these items?

How do I cheaply promote a compilation CD?

How can I promote a small CD release on the extremely cheap? For those playing along at home, yes, I'm talking about meficomp.

Initial disclaimer: I know nothing, nothing, about promotion. It is not my forte. It is possibly my antiforte, even.

This CD isn't a for-profit release, which puts me in a different boat than if I were trying to, say, self-release my own album. Profits from the project are going to charity, so I'm disinclined to cut deeply into that by spending any significant money on promotion. At the same time, selling all 1000 units, less a bit of promotional spending, will raise more money for the charity than selling 200 units and sitting on the rest.

Selling all the units would also be much more exciting for the two dozen musicians/bands involved.

And it's a compilation album—the notable feature is not a specific genre or or sound, but the excellent variety of sounds and artists and the specific compilation hook (in this case, the Metafilterness).

So: what sort of things can I do to promote this release on the cheap? To whom? How? When? Educate me.

Songs with a year in their title

I'm compiling a collection of songs that I'm calling "The History of the 20th Century". What songs have a year in their title? My rules are that it must have a year in the title but it doesn't have to mention the year in the lyrics but it can't just have a year added because the song was released that year. The band does not have to be famous but the song must be recorded [so I can buy it or download it - links if you have them would be great for your friend's band]. Here's where I've got to so far:

2000 Disco 2000 by Pulp
1999 Prince
1998 Sept 98 David Kilgour
1997 Eminem
1996 Blizzard of ’96 The Walkmen
1995 Luna
1994 Loudon Wainwright III
1993 Carter USM
1992 Blur
1980 Hatfield, 1980 by Everything But the Girl
If you have a better song for a year please suggest it because I want the compilation to be good as well. A few of my listed songs might be wrong as some just came from an AMG search and I have no idea what they're about except the title.

I might have to change my rules for the lean years 1922 - 1938; any songs you recall with lyrics about these years or events in these years? Or a way to complete these years with a bit more lateral thinking? And ,yeah I know, 1900 is technically the 19th century but what the hell...

Why am I doing this? It's a random way to listen to new music. And who knows it might end up as a unique take on the 20th century

David's last summer - or, music that deals with the transition from adolescence into a different world

Looking for songs that have a wistful, bittersweet feel to them that captures the move from adolescence into "adult" life - eg the moments before leaving school, or before getting your first job. Why do I ask? Well, my Ipod spat out the following songs on shuffle the other day:

Pulp - David's Last Summer
Belle and Sebastian - A Summer Wasting
The Divine Comedy - The Summerhouse

They all have a definite hint of nostalgia to them, and all touch on the transition from one phase of your life into another. I thought I'd try to put together a playlist including them and other similar songs. It doesn't have to be specifically about "last summers", simply about those threshold-type moments where you go from one phase of your life to another.

Any suggestions? Although the examples above are all pretty mainstream indie, I'd be interested in any musical style, genre or era.

Note - I'm really after songs that specifically deal musically or lyrically with these sort of themes, rather than songs that don't directly deal with them but which you associate with such moments due to your own personal experiences.

Underwater Love dance mix?

I give up. I've been searching for months for a remix of the song Underwater Love by Smoke City. The version I'm looking for was on an electronic/dance compilation a friend had bought in Spain in the late 90s. I'm not even sure if this version was done by Smoke City. The original song is slow and lovely, but I want the fast danceable version. Any info or leads would be appreciated.

Sisters are doin' it - women singers for a compilation cd

I want to make a compilation CD for my mum for mother's day (next sunday). Theme: Women singers. Genres: country (about which I know very little), MOR pop/rock, and classic singers like Patsy Cline and Dusty Springfield. There is, of course About 15 years ago my form teacher made me a tape of women singers that my mum loved, but it was in her car when it got stolen a few years later and that was that. Obviously, I cannot re-create that tape exactly, but this is what I remember from it and I would like the excellent mefi community to help me extrapolate from this and tell me what I need to get when I next visit my local internet MP3 emporium:

Dusty Springfield - I just don't know what to do with myself
Something by Michele Shocked
Something by 10,000 Maniacs
Something by Mary Chapin Carpenter
Something by Tammy Wynette
Something by Tanita Tikaram
Something by Emmylou Harris
Something by Patsy Cline

And a load of other stuff I've forgotten.

What happened to the music group Nimbus? And where did they get one of their samples?

The Chillout 2000 compilation album has made me very curious about a group called Nimbus, as you can see from the link. Google searches turn up very little about them, and I'd like to know, what happened to them? The album is from the UK, if that helps.

I have a second question about one of the quotes Nimbus sampled. I will post it inside the thread, since the quote is long. One of the Nimbus tracks, Subconsious Mind [sic], features several quote samples. I was able to track down one of them as coming from John Carpenter's awful movie Dark Star, but another has eluded me. Do the following lines ring a bell?

"You did what you had to. I did too. I can see that. Sure, I can see that. Put a few people in prison, a few more in hospitals, and a few more in cemeteries. But you didn't know. There's no way of knowing, if you were wrong or you were right."

"I'm sorry, I just--"

"There's no time for that."

"What can I do?"

"You can help us. We'll try to rebuild that transmitter. You can give us your help."

"All right. I'll do what I can."

Suggestions: songs of misunderstood intent.

I have an idea for a theme CD- songs of misunderstood intent. Any suggestions? [more inside] REM's "One I Love" is often misconstrued as a romantic song, as is Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight". Barring any songs that sound like love songs but are actually about God, (It doesn't light up my life, personally...) any other suggestions for this disc?
