I commute via public transportation, on a bus full of other long distance commuters. I am tired of lugging my laptop along, and would like to use my phone with a bluetooth keyboard, but don't have a tray table. How can I keep my phone from sliding away during turns and sudden stops? (And accommodate phone designs of the future?) More details inside. [more inside]
I am in some conversations about a potential new job at an organization based in Newark, NJ. When I was growing up in NJ the city had a reputation for being unsafe. My sense is that things have improved, but how much? What is it like to work in, and live in or near Newark? [more inside]

What is there to know about bicycle commuting in Minneapolis for someone brand new -to both bike commuting and/or Minneapolis? Is 8 miles one way too far? [more inside]
After 20-ish years of not cycling, I recently bought a bike for getting to work. It's a nice route - about two-thirds of the way is off the roads on dedicated cycle paths, and most of the rest is on quiet streets. But I cycled to work and back yesterday, and the roads just TERRIFY me. [more inside]
I'm looking at commuting to Raleigh for a 6 month contract. I need help keeping busy. [more inside]
My parents offered me the bike from my teen years that is still sitting in their garage (late 90s Specialized Hard Rock, if I'm remembering correctly). It was minimally used by me and my brother and it's probably been sitting around for about 10 years. What kind of work would it take to get it usable for a bike commute of ~5 miles each way? Would that work be worth it, or should I look into other bikes? [more inside]
I walk about an hour each way to work, and it's been taking a toll on my neck -- pain while walking, and stiffness that lingers for days afterward. Is there a backpack that'll put less strain on my body? [more inside]
I am going to start commuting via the Commuter Rail (train) to Boston next week after driving myself to work my entire career. The trip will take about 1 hour. What are some tips & tricks to taking the train to work? Boston specific tips (heading to North Station from North Shore and walking to work from there)? Best way to carry my computer & lunch (commuter luggage)? Which car should I sit in? Can I have conference calls on the train? Work on my computer? Best way to purchase monthly tickets? How to make sure I get a good seat on the train? Other stuff I haven't thought of yet but would be good to know? Thanks!

It's only temporary, but will likely last a few months. I'm looking for any tips for taking care of myself, as well as my relationship with my extremely supportive husband, and my wonderful children. Also, any Seattle-specific advice would be great (should I stay at the Homewood Suites next to the office? Should I get an apartment? How does one get a furnished apartment?? Should I get a UV lamp?). Thank you! [more inside]
Cambridge, MA's Alewife MBTA station: how much does a monthly parking pass cost? The MBTA's vendor site has all the clarity and customer service that you'd expect-- I need to register and provide a credit card number before they'll tell me the price and I just want a number. Thanks!
I need a very specific bag and I don't know where to look for it. I need a large bag that can be carried like a backpack, larger than 25L. I would like it to be in some way elegant (that's an open definition...), semi-fashionable for the PNW set, and water resistant enough to walk for 15 minutes in the rain and not be damp for days (so, probably not leather). I will shortly start a new job having worked from home for many years and I've unexpectedly been asked to start ASAP. There's some great advice on Ask about podcasts & commuting and some about 'returning to corporate hell', but I'm wondering about the practicalities of organising your life in advance for a working week, and especially wondering about what I don't know. Household member is temporarily working in Boston, and household (cat included!) is in PA, west of Newark. This is a sucky 5+ hour drive, and it seems to be far enough outside of a normal bus or Amtrak route to be worthwhile. What's the best strategy (and price) for booking weekend commuter flights between Boston and Newark? Do you show up and go standby, or Orbitz every time, or ... ?
I regularly run into a semi embarrassing situation when offering my seat to someone on the bus, and I would prefer to give both myself and the stranger in question easier outs. [more inside]
Someone I know is pregnant and I'd like to give her a gift. She does a more than hour long rail commute every day and I was hoping to get her something to make this commute easier on her in the coming months. This is the same person who gave me a good pair of headphones when I had a 3.5 hour commute a few years ago and I'd love to give her something that makes her commute better in the same way those headphones made mine better. My much-babied, recently inspected 2008 Scion xD won't start! When I got in the car yesterday morning and turned the key in the ignition, it made a buzzing/grrrr sound and some of the dash lights come on -- but that was it, the engine wouldn't turn over. I tried again about a half hour ago, and it did start up after a little hiccup, so I thought maybe yesterday was a fluke. But when I got in the car just now to actually go somewhere, it refused to start up again. Now the radio won't even turn on, though most of the dash lights still do. I tried rolling it down the hill, pumping the breaks, all the stuff non-mechanically-minded me can think of. Help! What can I do right now to get it to start and to get the engine to turn over? I've been thinking for a while about getting another bike. I have one bike that I like very much, but it's not as comfortable as I'd like for longer rides and so I tend not to ride as often as I otherwise might. I'm looking for a more relaxed and comfortable bike that will get me out on the road more often without too much sacrifice in speed. Requirements inside, recommendations appreciated. [more inside]
Our vanpool just switched to a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan. It's a FlexFuel vehicle and we'd like to know when/if it makes sense to use E85 fuel. We live in Minnesota. Our typical commute is 40 miles at highway speeds. Environmental concerns will be weighed, but so will economical ones.

Every morning I make idle chit-chat on the bus with a young man around my age. Lately I've been getting the impression that he wants a more personal relationship between us. Me, not so much. Keeping in mind that this is someone I will have to see every weekday morning for the next three months at the very least, how can I minimize the number of uncomfortable bus rides in my life? I'm trying to find work appropriate clothing that is made with bicycle commuting in mind. I'm particularly interested in button up shirts that are well tailored. I'm lucky enough to work in a creative industry but I still like to look nice-ish in my own quirky way. I'm done wearing t-shirts to work but I still ride my bicycle in almost every day. I've found a couple good pairs of paints via Levis and Mission Workshop here in San Francisco, but finding shirts with the commuter in mind seems almost impossible! Help me look snazzy while staying comfortable and non stinky!
