After an internet outage (now resolved) Comcast customer service recommended that we update our 8 year old cable modem (Thompson DCM-425) to a new wireless router/modem combo. I'm trying to figure out if this will really be an upgrade or more of a "well the wireless would be faster, if it were still working" sort of situation? [more inside]

I need your recommendations on the best modem for my Comcast Internet service. I'd like to stop paying the monthly rental fee and improve service.
Since I'm not terribly techie, can you also confirm that a new modem would in fact improve performance over the Comcast supplied modem?
Also, what wireless routers can you recommend to improve performance? I'm willing to pay for performance.

Quite suddenly, my modem works if I plug it into a machine, but not when I plug it into an Airport Express. Comcast says it's not their fault. Any idea what's going on? Every detail I can think of is inside. [more inside]

My internet connection has always had issues, but recently those issues have gotten exponentially worse. Comcast is the only constant in this equation, but they claim that the signal they're sending is strong! I need it fixed ASAP, what can I try? [more inside]

Modem/Router issues: why does our internet always cut out on one computer on the network, resulting in having to constantly plug/unplug the router to get it working again? [more inside]

Is there any advantage to having a router and cable modem made by the same company, or is it better to go best of breed in both cases regardless of maker? [more inside]
