I'm trying to set up internet service at my apartment. AT&T's downstream is abysmally bad for what they charge – 3 mbps for a lousy $30 per month. Comcast is better, but possibly more evil, and there are a lot of confusing legal riders in the contract that make me scared. Help! [more inside]

We have a TV but no cable subscription (we mostly watch content through Netflix or purchase on Xbox). We used to be able to watch the normal network channels with no problem -- Fox, NBC, CBS, ABC, and several PBS stations, along with some other stuff. We had both regular and HD channels. Now they're all gone and the only channels we can access are some jazz scheduling thing out of San Mateo, a bunch of radio channels, and NHK World (learning a lot about Japan!). I really miss PBS and wouldn't mind watching the Super Bowl. Please help. [more inside]

For the past 5 years I've used LinkSys BEFSR41 (version 4) router and generally haven't had too many issues but for the past 6 months its been pretty hellish as I have intermittent dropped connection and LinkSys says that this model is no longer supported and has no active firmware upgrades.
My household has 3 computers hard-wired and connect at all times. One of them is hooked up to online tv streaming so you could say the internet is always 'on' here. [more inside]

Four days ago, my Comcast cable internet service began slowing down in the evenings. I know this is normal behavior for cable service, since bandwidth is shared within communities. However, my usual 25 Mbps has slowed to somewhere between 1 and 4 Mbps after 5 PM, with the occasional 20 (very rare). I've seen it as low as 300 Kbps. I checked last night at 2 AM and it was clocking in at 50, which is what I pay for. What can I do? [more inside]

Had the Comcast basic cable service. Saw a deal for HBO for just an extra $10 a month for a year. Ordered. Had to get a new Set Top Box in order to display HBO. The box included instructions for setup, they looked simple.
Except the instruction diagrams didn't match the box that was sent. [more inside]

After an internet outage (now resolved) Comcast customer service recommended that we update our 8 year old cable modem (Thompson DCM-425) to a new wireless router/modem combo. I'm trying to figure out if this will really be an upgrade or more of a "well the wireless would be faster, if it were still working" sort of situation? [more inside]

Ok, theoretically simple question that I can't find a simple answer to:
I'm currently a Comcast customer subscribed to low-tier tv and internet. I'd like to drop my tv service and replace it with an antenna for OTA channels and a higher internet tier for streaming and general internet'ing (Comcast is my only real internet option, so I won't be dropping them entirely).
I need advice as to how to get the best possible rate for the internet service. Details below the fold. [more inside]

My Comcast feed and the MLB.com audio feed are about 30 seconds off. Unfortunately, the Comcast video is running 30 seconds behind the MLB.com audio. When I had DirecTV the audio was always about 1 minute behind, so it was easy to simply pause the TV until the audio caught up, then watch it off the DVR on a 1 minute delay synched to the audio feed.
How can I achieve the same result pausing the audio stream via MLB.com? Linux solutions are best as my laptop runs the latest Ubuntu LTS. Android ok too if there is an app that does this that I haven't found.
Please help, I just can't listen to Joe Buck and Tim McCarver for another game, let alone the entire World Series.

Last phone service I had was Comcast voice. I discontinued it and returned the black box that was mounted in the rafters in the basement.
Now I want to add an analog POTS line. I ordered it from Verizon, and they say it was activated, but when I plug an old trimline phone into one of my jacks, I get no dial tone.
Was there something else I need to do to restore analog phone capability besides just unplug the black box?

I need your recommendations on the best modem for my Comcast Internet service. I'd like to stop paying the monthly rental fee and improve service.
Since I'm not terribly techie, can you also confirm that a new modem would in fact improve performance over the Comcast supplied modem?
Also, what wireless routers can you recommend to improve performance? I'm willing to pay for performance.
