Scanning in 16-bit colour. I have a Canon CanoScan LiDE 600F plugged into a Vista machine. The box says "9600 x 4800 resolution! 48-bit colour!". Scanning options in Vista (It's all WIA not Twain these days) seem to limit me to 600dpi and 8-bit colour. Am I missing something, or does anyone else have any experience of pulling off this feat with this hardware, or know why the box would seem to be claiming unfacts?

What is the best approach to color management? I only just realised that how I see my photos in iPhoto, Photoshop, and Safari isn't how the majority of people on the net are seeing them? What is the best setup for consistent color management that still looks good? [more inside]

Late last year (November?) I saw Brad Pitt with a sort of patchwork of highlights on the cover of one of those major gossip magazines at a supermarket checkout. Which magazine/issue was it--or more to the point, where can I find an image of Brad Pitt with that look--or even more to the point, is there a more precise way of referring to it than 'patchwork of hilghlights'? How does colour-coding of medications work? For instance, Prozac is typically the combination of green and white, and the generic brands also perserve this colour. Is there some kind of universal system that pharmaceutical companies adhere to? How are the colours of medications determined?

I woke up one morning, one eye at a time, with a view of my girlfriend's face. Through one eye, she looked a bit rosy in her cheeks and on her ear, a healthy-looking woman. Switching to the other eye, her skin was pale, and the blush was gone. Surprised, I propped myself up and looked at a red pillow next to my bed: one eye bright red, and through the other a washed out ruddy colour.
My eyes seem fine now, but is that all in my head? What happened to my eyes that morning?

Is there a way to tint an entire web page a certain colour? As in, not actually altering the images and other content to be tinted that colour, just for the content to look that way when viewed on that page. It sounds to me like something that could be done with CSS but I'm really not sure. Google's results aren't turning up quite what I'm looking for, although maybe I just suck at finding the right words for this query.

Artistic Metafilter users, I need your advice! I have recently acquired some oil paints and a brush, and am very much enjoying using them so far. I wonder if anyone has some advice about the non-obvious stuff regarding oil painting. I've already discovered some things that I didn't know before (i.e. a bit of red paint and an equally-sized bit of yellow don't make orange, they make slightly lighter red), but please post obvious things anyhow - I probably don't know about them. I (to my shame) have spent almost the entirety of my artistic life using Photoshop and Lightwave, so this is very fun and confusing territory for me.

I recently got given, as a gift, a 1991 PANTONE SWATCH BOOK. On the back of the book there's the famous disclaimer: "due to uncontrollable pigment fading (etc) this book will change in approximately one year ... This book should be replaced regularly to maintain accurate color communication" - Now, I've used (but never personally owned) Pantone books for years, old ones and new ones - and it's never really affected the color that is ultimately printed. Meaning the color I pick from the book ends up looking just like the color that was printed. Question to you all, does the (reasonable) age of a pantone book really matter? I can see how things might change slightly, since it is paper and ink - and they probably have to include this disclaimer for authoritative reasons unimportant to someone like me who just wants a kind of green, a kind of brown - and not a scientifically exact color. Really at 80 bucks this "use only for a year" deal seems crazy. Is my thirteen-year old Pantone book useless? Does anyone have an old one and a new one to compare to? Thoughts? Opinions?
