Hi, parents of young children. I've been commissioned to design and format a series of small books aimed at you and your kind. How do you want it to look? [more inside]
My brother-in-law who is a guitarist and guitar collector wants to paint a pre-CBS Fender Stratocaster in the original 'Sonic Blue' colour that the company sold in the early 1960s (used by John Lennon amongst others). The trouble is that if you google this you end up with several different versions of the colour that vary in terms of their blue/green balance, saturation etc. So the question is, without getting into the philosophy of colour perception, is there an easy way to obtain the right colour of paint? According to this Buzzfeed post, people either see the dress in the picture as black & blue or gold & white. Sharing this with my friends - who I trust not to troll me - also showed the stark disparity. What's going on? Is this an optical illusion? Or something related to the way our brains process information? [more inside]
What is the difference in English between "The flowers are white" and "The flowers are white in colour"? Scientific texts (such as botanical descriptions) seem to prefer and add "in colour" after the colour name though it is redundant. Form wins the Google fight by a large margin and the Ngram for "white in color" shows a downward trend since the 1920s. Is it now OK to drop the "in colour" in contemporary (scientific) texts?
I have a colourway for a website consisting of 9 colour slots. One colour is repeated (slot #2 and slot #8) and I need to not repeat colours. Are there any online color schemers that will let me put in the 8 colors and make a suggestion for a 9th? My only criteria is that it provide good contrast for white text. [more inside]
My wife wants to make a 10 x 12 square quilt with a random-looking pattern. How many colors would she need for a quilt that follows these rules: 1) No two patches of the same color may touch each other, vertically, horizontally, or diagonally; 2) No pair of patches may be repeated in the same orientation (i.e., if there is a red patch above a blue patch, that combination may not be repeated, but you may have a blue patch above a red patch); 3) There are no patches of the same color that have the same vertical and horizontal offset: i.e., if there is a red patch with a second red patch that is one down and two across, there may not be a third red patch that's the same distance down and across from that second patch.
I'm preparing a presentation and I know that the projector available is quite bad, and the room where I will give this presentation doesn't have proper blinds so it's relatively bright. My slides are very simple, white background, black text, and a third colour for some highlights. I wonder: does the hive mind know what this colour should be in order to be really visible and actually highlight my stuff, given the aforementioned conditions?
I have typical Irish colouring (not stereotypical, think The Corrs), healthy brows and very little interest in maintenance. What do I need to know if I want to try going blonde. [more inside]

When shooting and preparing an image file for print, I've always tried to set things up so that the highlights are bright, the shadows are dark, and everything else is in the middle. At work, I've occasionally been told by my immediate superior that I'm overexposing my images, and that the highlight detail is, in their words, 'blown away'. Checking my files, the highlights in the images in question cut off around 245, sometimes as low as 240! Is there a reason why they'd want the highlights even greyer? [more inside]
How tough/insane is it going to be to colour my hair to look like Dr. Horrible's? How do I go about it? Difficulty level: Never done this before, though my wife has some experience with hair colouring at home, and planning on doing it at home as I can't see spending salon level money on a Halloween costume. UnhealthyGrapeVineFilter: Can anyone help me identify what's causing this leaf discolouration on my grape vine? Is it anything to worry about? I'm not sure if it's natural colour change, disease, mineral deficiency or more than one of these things happening at once. The vine is two years old, fruiting quite heavily, on a very sunny south aspect on a poor mix of clay and various stones. I don't know the variety but it's a standard garden centre dessert grape. The photos are in a what I think is a chronological sequence: http://imgur.com/a/2uITk
I'm making a Rainbow-themed playlist for my boyfriend. Could you recommend colour-themed songs? I'm doing fine for "Reds" and "Blues." It's the Indigos and Violets (or Purples) and Oranges and Yellows (and the non-rainbowy colours, like Browns and Whites and Blacks) that are tripping me up.

What colours are best for screen reading? I recently (forget where I) read that it is not black on white, yellow on black perhaps? Google surprisingly hasn't found me the article, or anything other that reconfirming that black on white really is the least straining on the eyes. Okay, thanks everyone!

To what extent can we discern different colours? What of this power is merely relational (a light blue, a lighter blue)? Have studies been done to determine if our "resolution of discernment" (a particular distance in nanometers of which we can differentiate two visual wavelengths with unaided vision)? What's the difference between how we speak of colour, how we conjure it up in its particularity in our imagination, and how we differentiate it through experience? [more inside]
Scanning in 16-bit colour. I have a Canon CanoScan LiDE 600F plugged into a Vista machine. The box says "9600 x 4800 resolution! 48-bit colour!". Scanning options in Vista (It's all WIA not Twain these days) seem to limit me to 600dpi and 8-bit colour. Am I missing something, or does anyone else have any experience of pulling off this feat with this hardware, or know why the box would seem to be claiming unfacts?

Colour Theory: I have an ActionScript 3 project that has models that wear changeable clothing, where the style and colour of the clothing can change. The clothing is composed of several layers (colour, border, details) and there are preset colours for the 'colour' layer. When the colour layer changes I need to automatically calculate a contrasting colour for the border layer. I know this involves the HSV colour space but I'm struggling to get good results.
