Holiday Recommendations for Denver?

Denver filter: My boyfriend and I will be in the Denver area from Dec 25 - Jan 1st.

I would love Holiday/ winter activity recommendations for my boyfriend and I (mid-20s and early 30s) and activity recommendations for us and my parents. I lived in Denver ex-urbs for many years with my family, but we were never around for Christmas / New Year's.

Your favorite Denver area winter time activities would be swell as well. We live in Seattle. Casa Bonita is already on our list.

Help me become a teacher without a masters.

Can I teach in Colorado without a Masters? The details are, I live in Denver, I have a bachelors degree in Computer Information Systems, I've been working as a freelance software developer for the last 2+ years, when I say freelance I mean that's how I make a good serious living. I'd like to get into teaching computer science at either a high school or junior college level. Nothing too advanced, but either Intro to Programming, RDMS or Data Structures. I've seen a lot of places require a masters but I'd rather not rack up another student loan burden plus sink all my time into grad school for the next 2 years. I have a great resume, very strong references from high profile clients, I've never had difficulty getting solid, well paying work. I feel I would be good teaching older kids/young adults, I've worked with high school students a few years back and really enjoyed it; Is there a way I can make all this translate into at least some part time teaching job?

Hotel recommendations for Capitol Hill in Denver?

Can anyone recommend a decent hotel in Denver, somewhere in or around the Capitol Hill area? Up to maybe +/-$125 a night. Clean, good location to do shopping/sights/etc, but otherwise no major restrictions. My partner and I will be there for a long weekend in December and plan on doing some stuff northwest of Capitol Hill (Buell Theater for Spring Awakening, Denver Art Museum) and southeast of Capitol Hill (Room & Board, Nordstrom). A hotel in any of those areas would be great. I was looking at The Burnsley Hotel on Grant St.--any experiences there? Finally, any recommendations for good stuff for us (two mid-twenties guys) to do in the areas near your recommended hotel? Theater, shops, restaurants--we're pretty open. Thanks in advance.

Plan the best road trip EVER

Help me plan the most epic road trip from Wisconsin to Aspen, Colorado! Three friends and I have just been given an awesome opportunity. We're going to visit an uncle who lives in Aspen, Colorado. He's invited us to come over the winter holidays and stay at his house and ski, provided we can get there ourselves. We want to leave the day after Christmas and come back on the 3rd of January, giving us 9 days total for the trip. We figure we'll allot two days for travel both ways, which will give us plenty of time to do some sightseeing while getting there.

I know that one stop will be Colorado Springs, because I really want to visit the Air Force Academy there. Otherwise, everything else is open.

With a quick google mapping, this will generally be the route we'll take.

Where can we stop along the way? What cities are worth walking around in? Google puts us through places like Des Moines, Omaha, and Denver. Of these cities, what are some cool things to see or places to eat?
For those of you who've been on long road trips, what should we bring to make the experience easier or more enjoyable?
What should I expect as far as driving conditions in late December through these areas?
What can we see once we're in Aspen? We figure we'll ski most days, but I'm planning on one or two off days where we'll bum around town or drive somewhere nearby. Where do you suggest we go?
Any other fun advice you can give us?

Thanks!

Denver in a Day

Boulder? Denver? Help me day-trip to Colorado *THIS* Saturday! So I snatched up an interesting offer: Frontier Airlines had PHX->DEN same-day roundtrip for $59, inclusive. (No add'tl taxes or fees, available ONLY for this Saturday, and only for an hour, at that!)

We arrive in DEN at 9:24am and we depart at 9:20pm.

We *may* have a ride from the airport, but what's the cheapest way to downtown Denver (or Boulder) if not? Where's best to land if we want to get around the city relatively easily once we do, assuming no car?

What's there to see and do for fun eating on a Saturday? Which would you recommend to make the best use of our time? We probably need to be back at the airport by 8:15 at the latest, so take that into account. (No checked bags, clearly.)

I like photography, museums, good food, fun art, cool people, markets, fairs, weird off-the-beaten path stuff, and anything else going. I'll have my brother in tow, who's also down for pretty much anything.

Help plan my one-day itinerary, and understand that very little is a bust for us; it was a $60 thing, so why not, right?

Thanks!

Are there any vegan or vegan-friendly restaurants in or around the following places in Colorado: Denver, Boulder and Breckenridge? The boyfriend and I will be in Colorado in September. He's somewhat familiar with those three areas since he lived among those places for 12 years but he hasn't lived in Colorado for about 5. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
How to get social work jobs in Colorado

What is the best way to find Social Work employment in Colorado? What are some different mental health agencies that are hiring? I am trying to move to Colorado by the end of the year and am a licensed social worker. I have started to get my appliations/resume together, but could use any useful information at all that could help me find a job. I guess I am not too interested in the Denver area, but would like to be in the range from Colorado Springs to Grand Junction, and as far down as Durango. I would love to live directly in Gunnison, CO if at all possible...but thats a small town. Thanks...

In-State Tuition in Colorado

Please help me get in-state tuition in Colorado! Here is the situation:

I have lived in Colorado for a year, going to school. I pay out-of-state tuition and would like to change that. In September, I am going to go to Spain for 6 months to study abroad with my school.

I have a Colorado Driver's License, and according to this ( http://sfs.colostate.edu/residency/instatetuition.aspx ) it appears that that might be enough.

Technically, I will have identification issued in July 2009, so couldn't that start the countdown for my 12 month requirement?

"Evidence of legal ties outside of Colorado during the domicile year that demonstrate residency in another state may include the following:"

I won't fit the criteria of any of these. How should I go about this?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Where to move in Colorado for a skiing teacher

Moving to Colorado in December. Want to be close to skiing and looking for a job in education. Best location and opportunity? I'll be moving in December after I receive my teaching license in Ohio. I doubt I will get a teaching job right away so I plan on subbing in a school or temping somewhere else until the next school year rolls around. I'm 25 so I wouldn't mind a young part of town but is not a must. I'm thinking the west side of Denver though because it's close to skiing. Other cities I should consider or what parts of Denver should I look in? Thanks!

Colorado vacation advice: SUV rental necessary? & more...

Colorado (Denver/Vail/Boulder) vacation advice: SUV rental necessary? Weather adjustments for a Floridian? General suggestions? Boyfriend and I are taking a vacation to Colorado Aug 5-12. We're flying into Denver from Orlando, FL, but will be spending most of our time around Vail (where we're sleeping).

1) We've been told by others who've visited CO that an economy or mid-size won't cut it for a rental. Why is that, exactly? What risks do we take by renting an economy or midsize? I ask because renting an SUV for the week is ~$800-$1100. Economy/midsize prices are hundreds less. Before we rent an SUV, is it really necessary? We're not going skiing obviously, and I don't know what exactly we'll end up doing (probably festivals, tours, maybe some hiking/biking (most likely with guided tours), hopefully whitewater rafting, perhaps horseback riding), but we will be driving a bit, definitely every day. Also, it's just the 2 of us.

2) We're used to warm, humid weather at low altitudes. What should we expect or prepare for in CO? I've heard it's very dry, hard to breathe, and that Floridians tire much more quickly in that atmosphere. Boyfriend has asthma & allergies, though he takes meds for both.

3) Any other general advice or suggestions for anything to do or see in Denver/Vail/Boulder areas is much appreciated.

We're moving out west!

Where can we live (in the US) that has both pleasant summers and awesome snowboarding? My boyfriend and I plan to move in the next year or so, and we’re having lots of fun picking out potential dream cities to live in. My Metafilter searches have turned up some great options and several really helpful threads along similar lines, so I thought I’d throw our requirements into the mix.

My boyfriend’s goal in life is to have easy access to awesome snowboarding, and I’m cool with that as long as I can still have summer - I don’t want to be wading though snowdrifts year-round, and I want sunshine and milder temps for at least a couple months. I also want to be in a decent-sized city - nothing huge (or really expensive), but I like being near restaurants, concerts, art/culture, festivals, shopping, bike trails, and so forth. My boyfriend will be attending grad school down the road, so proximity to a university would be nice.

That’s our wish list. So far, we like Denver, Fort Collins, Seattle, and Portland (and we’re open to more suggestions). We also need some help narrowing our choices so we can plan a trip to visit some of these places, so I’m putting the gist of what we’ve found about each city below, and any comments from people who have actually lived there would be helpful.

Denver - Large city so better job prospects (I‘m a graphic designer), weather similar to where we are now (Wisconsin, which actually seems to have harsher winters). Right by Vail, Breckenridge, et al., so obviously the snowboarding would be great. What’s the downside? Is it expensive to live there? (We’ve already nixed Boulder because it seems pricey.)

Fort Collins - Sunny with mild winters, college town, smaller than Denver so less expensive and less traffic. Further from snowboarding - looks like 3-4 hours to the big resorts - but are there smaller hills nearby? Is it kind of sleepy and suburb-y there?

Seattle / Portland - Both look like awesome cities with great culture - what are the differences in size, cost of living, general feel, etc? Seattle has Mount Ranier and Olympic National Park, and Portland is right by Mount Hood - how does the snowboarding / skiing compare to the big Colorado resorts? I’ve read varying reports of the weather in this area, from “it’s always gray and rainy” to “it’s always gorgeous and mild” - what’s the truth?

Keystone, Colorado in the Summertime

Any opinions or suggestions, on what to do/not do in the Keystone, Colorado area the last week in July? My family has rented a house in Keystone. The family ranges from six kids, age 4-10, three kids, age 13-15, to ten+ adults, 30-50 and one 65+. We are somewhat outdoorsy. We will do some hiking, some (not serious) mountain biking, (level I, II, III) white-water rafting and such; balanced with some general exploring, hanging out and eating and napping, of course.

I've been doing the Google search for activities and stuff and I was just wondering if anyone wouldn't mind sharing first-hand experiences with the subject. Anything in Frisco or Dillon we should check out? No suggestions are too crazy, no opinions too mundane.

I found out that I might be a father when I got served papers for child support... now what?

I found out that I might be a father when I got served papers for child support... now what? So here is my current situation. I have been divorced for 2 years. Ex-wife move to the east coast and I am currently living in Colorado as an underpaid doctoral grad student. I got served paternity action papers a week ago informing me that my wife had a child 7 months after we filled the papers for divorce. While I am angry that she lied to both me and the courts that she wasn't pregnant at the time(divorce papers state that she isn't expecting a child ect), I realize that now is not the time to get overly emotional about the fact that I was never even given the chance to see my child.

I know I need to first figure out if it really is my child (we got divorced due to my wifes infidelity), so I am going for a genetic test. But after that I really don't know what steps to take. Financially the baby is taken care of. My ex-wife's mother (who is extremely wealthy) is thrilled to have a grandson to take spend money on. Thrilled enough to call me and say that if I try to get any rights to see the child she will make it her personal hobby and the job of her lawyers to make my life miserable until I stop showing up and give up all my rights.

As for me being a part of my child's life... I really want to be there but I don't have the money to fly out there/move out there and my ex-wife's mother made it crystal clear that she wants to force me to be just a paycheck for her child and her grandchild.

I know your not my lawyer but I don't have enough money to get one nor am I poor enough (I am below the poverty line, just not below it enough) to qualify for free legal aid. So here are my questions:

1) What do you think I can do to make sure I have the right to see my child smile on her birthdays and watch her grow up? Legally I have no clue how I will be treated by the courts (I assume that nothing will be in my favor) nor do I have any idea how to effectively stop my ex-wife's mother from harassing me in the future.

2) One of my main fear is that my child support payments will be calculate based on what I am capable of making, not how much my grad school stipend is. Does this happen often? (I think ex-wife's mother will push for something like this).

3) What will fuck me over in the future? Ie what do you think I should be aware about, or something someone wish they would tell you before going through a process like this?

My throw away email address is ytrewq7890@gmail.com. Thanks in advance.

We're planning to move from Oregon to Colorado. We also plan to buy a new car soon. Should we buy it in Oregon (no sales tax) or just wait til we get to Colorado? If we do buy here in Oregon, I know Colorado will ding us when we register our new car there. But would that ding be as costly as simply paying sales tax on a new car purchase there? Thanks.

Crested Butte, CO, Vacation-Filter:

What are the must-do/see/eat/visit places in Crested Butte, Colorado in July? Yeah, we've googled the heck out of the place, but nothing beats AskMe for travel tips. We've got a one-week stay planned for two families (three adults and two 7-year old girls). Looking for suggestions that the whole group can do, but also for kid-cool things that the kids can do with one adult while the others trade off and have an adult vacation day doing something else. Car available for day-trips if something neat is close by that you'd recommend. Also need info about local eateries, watering holes and such.

Colorado camping (with some criteria)

I need help finding a camping site near Denver. There will be 6-8 people, and we'll be camping Friday and Saturday nights in the middle of July. Where can we find a place with scenery, at least some privacy, and access to swimming? My girlfriend just signed up for a MeFi account, but she can't ask anything for a week. We're cheating. She says:

"I am in charge of making reservations for a group of no more than 8 people who will be congregating mid-July in Denver from all over the country. Because some of them will be driving long distances, I'm looking for camping sites within 2 hours' drive of Denver. Having access to swimming within 10 or 15 minutes' drive (not necessarily at the same campsite) is an absolute must. And, because most of the campers are non-Coloradans, I'm hoping to find a place with scenery to wow the out-of-staters.

However, what I'm finding is a lot of campsites which are near reservoirs or lakes, but which have little, if any, shade and absolutely zero privacy. We don't necessarily want to be in the middle of nowhere, but we go camping to be crazy and isolated together, not to make friends. Surely someone knows of a place in the Denver-ish area with some shade, some seclusion, and some safe water?"

Note: this is car camping. We need to be able to drive to within a hundred yards or so of the campsite. Lame, I know, but nobody wants to hump five cases of beer three miles into the woods. I would. But nobody else wants to.

Okay, not really. Possibly moving to Colorado Springs in the next ~6 months. Any advice from knowledgeable present or former locals is appreciated. I've looked here, here and a few other threads where people have talked about living and working there. I'm married with two kids (one school-aged). I don't have any timeline on buying a house, but am aiming toward areas like Manitou or Old Colorado City (we like older homes, and detest snout houses and the sorts of geography they seem to be synonymous with). I know we'll be fish out of water in terms of our politics and priorities, but I'm not going to pay Boulder premiums for the privilege of a miserable commute just so I can be around people with whom I have more in common.

I'm a little familiar with the area, as I've traveled there for work a number of times, and have friends there, but I need the nuts & bolts: schools, neighborhoods, down to good mechanics and things I can't find in city guides.

I live in Denver and my parents are coming to town in a few weeks. We thought it would be nice to take them up into the mountains. We don't want to drive for more than a couple of hours and we'd like to bring our labrador retriever. Does anyone have a suggestion of a nice city/area we can visit that is dog friendly? We were thinking of maybe the Dillon area--we've been to Conifer with them a couple of times and would like to go further up into the mountains.

Things to Do near Denver When You're Dead

I'm looking for a semi-isolated rental cabin in the Rockies within a couple hour drive of Denver. All I can find are ski condos. Can I get a little help? My wife and I have rented cabins in the mountains near Pigeon Forge, Tennessee in the past, and have enjoyed just getting away from it all and holing up for a long weekend alone. I stress the alone part -- part of the fun is (at least the illusion of) isolation from neighbors. For an idea of what I'm talking about, here is where we've stayed in the past.

With air fares so low, we're now looking at flying out to Denver, Colorado (USA) and renting a cabin in the Breckenridge/Keystone area, Nederland area, or Estes Park area -- basically anywhere in the mountains within a two hour drive of Denver. The problem that I'm running into is that everything I find is either in town, a duplex (two units to a building), or a multiple unit condo.

Does anyone know a place that rents log cabins that might fit our needs? In case it matters, we're looking for a four night stay in October. Bonus points for personal recommendations.

Should I move to Colorado?

Advice: Do I move to Colorado?

My wife and I live in Boston. She is going to change jobs. I have a good job. Almost all of our college friends live nearby. We are very happy.

However, we feel like we'd really like to move out west, where some other friends and family are, just to try something new.

I'd rate Boston an 8/10, and my Job here is an 8/10.

Colorado would be a 10/10 location. I don't know if I could find an 8/10 job out there...

So the question is: "Is it worth sacrificing a good job for perfect location?"

(I know every locale has its warts, but I've wanted to live in CO since I was about 5, and visit about 3 times/year already).

Thanks for the advice!

Are 401k's & IRA's subjec to a Deficiency Judgment? (Colorado)

After a foreclosure & a Deficiency Judgment, can they go after my 401k & IRA? I am a few months away from foreclosure on a piece of property in Colorado. I assume that the lender will pursue a Deficiency Judgment. If they do, can they go after my 401k and my IRA's? Are there any assets that cannot be touched by a DJ?

Also, maybe I shouldn't assume that they will pursue a DJ. Is there any way to find out if my lender (WAMU - Washington Mutual) regularly pursues them in Colorado?

If it makes any difference, the total value of my retirement savings (401k & IRA) is less than the likely amount of the DJ. In other words, were they to "tap" my retirement savings, it would wipe out 100% of the value AND I'd still owe money.

Thanks for any insight...

A friend of mine needs Colorado songs. That is to say, she is looking for songs either (preferably) about Colorado or by Colorado bands. Yes, John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High" we know; also Bob Seger's "Get Out of Denver." Also thinking of The Fray and a few others; but does anybody know any songs about Colorado or Colorado places?

landlord trying to replace carpets that don't need replacing

my landlord is trying to make me pay for replacing the carpets when they do not warrant a replacement, and she will not stick to a verbally (and textually) agreed upon date of moving out early (which was her idea so that her new owner could move in asap) unless we agree to replacing the carpets. What should I do? I live in a townhouse w/ 2 roommates that we rent from a private owner. I'm the liaison between my roommates and the landlord (we are all on the lease). This is in Boulder County, CO (advocate of renters' rights, as I'm told) I believe it is her first time being a landlord. Before Christmas, my landlord called me and said that she is selling the place to a friend. She wanted to know if we could move out early so the new owner could move in ASAP. We told her that it was definitely a possibility and that we'd see what we could do. Around the 3rd week of January, we found a new place and called her to tell her that we wanted to move out.

side note: During this time we were having some pipe vibration issues that we wanted her to come take a look at. After she went to inspect the pipe situation (I wasn't there but my roommates were), she called me and told me that she thought the carpets in the downstairs were completely destroyed and wanted to have them replaced. She also said the entrance way to the townhouse was destroyed and that needed to be replaced as well. The downstairs is white shag, 1 year old, and had some noticeable stains on it in 10x10 area. She also complained about fingerprints on the railings on the steps and doors, dust on the vents, etc. Petty stuff. After she complained about the carpets, we rented a Rugdoctor and tried to clean them as much as possible. She then wanted to come inspect the carpets, but never ever gave me notice to do so and came in when nobody was there to inspect them. I didn't know about this til later.

So, I was on the phone w/ her discussing the carpet and move-date situation after we knew about our new apartment when she told me she had come on a day to inspect the carpets but never told me when and what time. I was irate and called her unprofessional. This upset her and she handed the phone to her husband who proceeded to cuss me out, threaten to get me kicked out of my new apartment, ruin my credit, make us stay the entire length of the lease, and basically physical violence. I was pretty shaken up after this. Things calmed down (me kissing her undeserving ass) and her and I sorted things out the next day through text messaging: moving out early was agreed to be Feb 11th. After that agreement, I asked if I could have it in writing and she said she would fax it over on Monday after they got back in town. Monday comes and she faxes me over an agreement that her husband put together (w/ a lawyer's help from the sound of it) and it says that if we want to move out on the 11th, we have to agree that the carpets are "completely destroyed" and we have to pay a proportionate amount of the replacing and sign it. She never gave a monetary value, just that damages would be calculated within 60 days. She has priced the new carpet and installation at $2500 for the whole townhouse with us not paying any of the top level, the entrance way of the main level, and the entire bottom level. Between my roommates, we'd be splitting in 3rds the main level, and my 1 roommate would be paying entirely for the bottom ($1000).

She told me before when I brought up professionally cleaning the carpets to save my $ and that they were going to be replaced anyway. It sounds to me (and everybody I've shared this with) that she has made some promise to the new owner about replacing the carpets. Since this letter, we've gotten the carpets professionally shampooed and they look really good (also took pics): upstairs was never an issue, the entrance way looks great (nothing more than normal wear and tear) as well as the rest of the main level, and the downstairs looks good.

This post has a few factors. First, it is entirely 1 roommate's fault for the downstairs and he knows this. side note: I dislike him greatly for a list of things too long to mention. If we replaced the carpet, my guess is that the cost would be around $1500 and that 1 roommate would be paying $1000 plus 1/3 of the entrance way. Our security deposit would cover this. I'd be out $400 of it minus the 1/3 of the entrance way and my 1 roommate would be paying me back over the course of like 6 months.

So in conclusion, should we just bend over and pay the landlord knowing full well that my 1 roommate will get the rotten (but justified) end of the deal? Or should we fight this thing because the landlord is out of her mind and the carpets have been cleaned the don't need to be replaced?

Cost breakdown:

1. Replace the carpets:
- save the rest of the month's rent (+$235)
- pay flat fee for cost of carpet (me: $150-200 and having my roommate pay me back for the amount that i have to cover him, probably $500)

2. Fight it and goto court
- pay the rest of the month's rent ($235)
- pay carpet cleaning ($120)
- stress about court ruling
- possibly get money back from court ruling

Help me choose health insurance?

Can you help my wife and I choose health insurance? I'm shopping for health insurance for my wife and I. I'm looking here for recommendations on good companies and good plans; tips on what to be sure to get and what to avoid; and even "Hey you sound like me, here's what I have and love."

We are 31 and 29, in good shape, and non-smokers. We live in Colorado. She currently does massage but in about three months she'll quit that, we'll move, and start trying to get pregnant. I have a desk job now but when we move I'll be looking to learn a trade - likely I'll be apprenticing as a plumber. We both snowboard now, she more than I.

So considering our current vocations and free-time activites, as well as our planned future situation...

I think we need covered: ER/broken bone, pre-natal and post-natal and possibly delivery. We lean towards home birth, alternative medicine, etc so coverage for that would be great.

I think we don't need: prescriptions, major surgery, mental health.

We might like: dental, vision, chiropractic, massage.

Bonuses would include portability (for when we move (within CO)), and a good range of choice in providers, as well as (in priority order) low premiums, low deductibles, and low co-pays. As befits insurance, this is pretty much just-in-case coverage. We don't really expect to use it much or at all. (Feel free to regale me with evidence that supports other thinking, just please no YOU GOTTA HAVE PSYCH AND MAJOR MED CUZ YOU NEVER KNOW!!1!.)

Thanks so much!
