What Colorado ski town should I live in?

I'm moving to Colorado near Breckenridge for the winter (Nov - Mar/Apr). What towns should I check out and where should I search? I have a season pass for Breckenridge, Arapahoe Basin and Keystone and think I will be doing most of my skiing/snowboarding at Breckenridge. I'd like to live somewhere that makes it super easy to get there.

My plan is to find a room in a house with other people (for both financial and social reasons). So, can you suggest specific towns and neighborhoods I should be checking out? Any hidden gems that are less expensive and yet still close to Breckenridge? Also, where (besides Craigslist) should I do my searching. I plan on going out for a week in October to look in person for something starting in November.

Any other suggestions, tips, tricks are quite welcome.

Tomatofilter: why won't mine ripen?

Tomatofilter: Why aren't my tomatoes red? The mister and I have a small garden in Denver, Colorado. We got a Roma tomato and it's got plenty of green fruit on it (has had for weeks now) but so far I've seen no signs of ripening. This plant was put in from a 6" pot in early-mid June. It's extremely healthy and shows no signs of blight, fungus, etc. It just continues to throw green fruits that won't ripen.

My concern is the short growing season here. Nights here are already going down to the low 50s F, and we've already had our first autumn snowstorm up at 9000' (we're at 5,280). If these don't ripen up soon then I'll have to build a cold frame or something which I'm not really eager to deal with.

How can I encourage the fruits to ripen?

Or, alternatively, what can I do with dozens of green tomatoes? I don't much like them fried, before you ask.

List of new businesses in CO...should I fork over the dough or keep looking?

I need a list of new businesses/incorporations in Colorado. Is buying one my only option? I'm working on a project that requires an up-to-date list of the newest business filings in Colorado. I'm trying to harness Google in my hunt for such a list, but my luck seems to be failing me. Hours of exhaustive searching have only yielded direct mail companies that want money for a list of new business filings and incorporations.

I've used the Secretary of State's business database search, but it times out and won't return the information I need.

Anyone have ideas for alternative ways to find out about new business filings in Colorado, or should I suck it up and pay for one? If I do end up forking over some cash, can you recommend a reputable vendor?

Give me a reason to not go to Boulder

I think the mothership may be in Boulder, Co and I have a burning desire to go there. I'm so in love with the place that I'm probably missing the bad stuff. Is there anything bad about Boulder? Boulder seems to me to be about as progressive as I can get without going to San Francisco. It feels like Austin used to feel. (And parts of Austin still do.) But I cannot take another summer in Texas.

I want to live somewhere where there are tons of trees and nature, access to astounding education channels from kindergarten through doctorate programs. An active arts community, progressive politics, and an amazing public library are all things that are on my "really want" list, and Boulder seems to fill all of them. As well, there seems to be a solid job market for code slingers, which makes my husband happy.

So, what am I missing? What are the deep dark secrets that are horrible about Boulder? Anything?

Got wood?

There has got to be a place that sells firewood in central Colorado, right? My friends and I are leaving for our second annual climbing/camping/rafting/beer drinking trip to central Colorado in a few days. Specifically the area around Salida and Buena Vista. Last year we kept our eyes peeled the entire time for any place that sold firewood and the only place we could find was Walmart. The only problem with that is that their "firewood" is just scrap chunks of 2x4's, which makes for a crappy fire and even crappier ambiance sitting around the campfire.

I've searched high and low on the web and I can find firewood places in Canon City and Gunnison, but that's too far to drive. It's hard to believe that there isn't anywhere to get decent firewood in Salida or Buena Vista, so I'm choosing to believe that I'm just not looking in the right place. So, is there anyone from there or that visits there that knows where the locals get their firewood?

Muchas gracias!

Help troubleshoot and enhance my move / road trip from Lawrence, Kansas to Eugene, Oregon.

Help me troubleshoot and enhance my roadtrip / move to Eugene, Oregon. I will soon depart Lawrence, KS for adventures that will eventually leave me in Eugene to begin graduate studies with UO. I'm going to outline the planned itinerary in the hopes that the hive mind can suggest areas to visit at our planned stops, beautiful or interesting routes to take between them, and interesting pit stops to make. Also, warnings of potential trouble spots or situations will be greatly appreciated.
The Participants:

A mated pair of chemical engineers and myself. We all love the outdoors, interesting technology, interesting architecture/engineering (especially anything energy efficient, otherwise green, or enormous), anything that will increase our nerdlore, and any delicious food of almost any variety. We're all in very good shape, although my 270 lb ass will not be running up any mountains.

The Vehicle:

A 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit, so no unimproved roads.

Itinerary:

Day 1:

Leave Kansas and pick up two friends at Denver International, thus officially beginning the road trip. Drive to Great Sand Dunes National Park and set up camp. We're thinking about stopping at Garden of the Gods on the way down. I'm kinda torn between driving down on 29 so that we can see Garden of the Gods and driving out on 70 and then down on 24/285 to get some awesome mountain highway action in.

Day 2:

A hurried attempt at acclimation for days 3 to 4. Play around on the Dunes and see other interesting things in the area. So far, besides the Dunes, I know of Zapata falls, although I cannot remember the exact location.

Day 3:

Get up very early, drive to the Mt. Blanca/Ellingwood trailhead, and pack in to Lake Como. Set up camp and enjoy the lake, trees, and canyon walls. I should mention that I've done the Blanca/Ellingwood combo before and that we are all experienced hikers. I'm not enthusiastic about doing this two days after getting to altitude, but this is the portion of the trip I'm most sure of. One question; on my previous trip, we were in Jeeps and easily made it to the beginning of the serious incline before we got out and started hiking. Are there spots on the sandy, car-navigable part of the road where I will be able to pull over and park without going into the bushes and rocks? 14ers.com seems to indicate so, but I want to be sure that I'm not going to have to park within sight of the highway.

Day 4;

Summit Blanca and Ellingwood, head back to the vehicle, and drive off into the midday sun. Head out to Black Canyon of the Gunnison and make camp. For the drive to Gunnison, we're currently set for doing 285 to 114 to 50, but 149 looks really fun and twisty.

Day 5:

See what we can in Gunnison during the early morning, drive to Arches National Park, see what we can in a few hours, and drive to Great Basin National Park to camp for the night. This is a very rushed portion of the trip, but we want to have several days in SanFran later on and are constrained by plane tickets.

Day 6:

Drive from Great Basin to Grass Valley, CA, where we will apparently be hanging out at some awesome bathing holes near some awesome waterfalls.

Day 7:

Drive from Grass Valley to San Francisco and crash with friends. We will be staying at an apartment in what my friend calls the McBaker Heights neighborhood, although I'm not sure whether that name is colloquial. The intersection of Baker and Golden Gate gives you a general area. My understanding is that the area requires some sort of special neighborhood permit and has no off-street parking, so I need to figure out a safe arrangement for parking my car. Non-exorbitant garage parking would probably be fine. We'll reach SF on a Saturday afternoon, so I'm hoping to avoid doomtraffic.

Days 8 – 9:

San Francisco! Oh, what shall we see?!? Our friends in the city have plans already, but suggestions would be great. Bonus points for godlike sushi and any other kind of interesting ethnic food.

Day 10:

Drive up the coast to Redwood National Park. We're not sure about the route yet, although we would love some awesome coastal highway action. We also aren't sure of what portion of the massive park to camp in.

Day 11:

Drive to Crater Lake, check it out, drive to Eugene and crash at the co-op I'll be living in. Any suggestions for awesome places to eat dinner or night scenes to check out?

Day 12:

Get the other two to Portland for a 10 am flight.

Hotel/House rental ideas for 8-10 guys in Grand Junction and/or Glenwood Springs CO area? I've got an annual trip coming up in September with 10-12 guys for 3-4 days. This year we are heading to the Grand Junction/Glenwood Springs area of Colorado.

Outside of major chain hotels, can anyone give recommendations for places to stay? Proximity to food and beer...er I mean, beer and food, are a big plus. We'll probably be hanging out, playing poker, etc. so suites are preferable to hotel rooms. Kitchen facilities also a plus.

I think the tentative plan is that we will be in Grand Junction area for a couple of nights, Glenwood Springs for one.

This is year 3 of this question. Year 1 yielded perfect advice for Portland, where we stayed (and loved) at the Northrup Inn. Year 2 not so much for Santa Fe, where we found a rental house through other means.

Best wildflowers in Colorado?

ColoradoWildflowerFilter: Two guys, four days, a crapload of camera gear, last gasp before one guy gets married. We plan to be in Aspen first thing Friday morning, and need to leave the state by noon (preferably just after sunrise) on Monday. Where are the best stands of wildflowers *right*now*? Other details: We plan to drive a Mazda Protege as far as we dare up the way to Yankee Boy, American, and Governor's Basins, then mountain bike with heavy camera gear the rest of the way. But the "peak" best I can tell, is still a couple weeks off in those basins.

So, where are the best fields of flowers that can be gotten to? What else is not to be missed this time of year?

Bonus: Where's the best place to stock up on beer? We'd like to come home with a couple, ten cases of stuff we can't get back home.

Where is a good place to go camping this weekend within a few hours of Denver, CO? A friend and I are looking for some place semi-primitive to go camping this weekend within a couple hours drive of Denver, CO. By "semi-primitive" I mean not a campground with dozens of other people but some place we need to hike in to that has some decent hiking around it.

Diamond Lake is a place we've gone before that we like but the problem we're running in to is that certain elevations still have a ton of snow making them pretty much inaccessible for camping.

Tx to Colorado trip/camping/firearm/bear filter: I am taking my wife and child tent camping in Aspen, CO. I have a few questions that i need some answers to.
1. Can i travel with a firearm(Pistol) in my car for the trip? Not 100% on our route yet but i will be going thru Tx, OK, and Co..Maybe Kansas but not sure yet.

2. Can i bring the firearm to the campsite (Difficult Campground-Near Aspen)? Cant find any documentation on this thats why im asking.

3. Are black bears and mountain lions a big threat in Colorado? Ive heard there are all over near Aspen. What caliber pistol would be effective against a black bear but easy enough to take on this trip?

Thanks....And any other tips about camping in the Rockies would be appreciated.

Trying to help a relative navigate the tricky waters of child support

Can anybody school me about child support enforcement laws in the state of Colorado? My sister is a divorced mother of two young children. At the time of her divorce, she was granted custody and awarded a monthly child support stipend. Her ex-husband’s payment record is spotty and frequently nonexistent, and my sister resolved this past week to return to the court that had ordered the child support (Jefferson County, Colorado) to file the paperwork that would compel her ex to pay the back child support, plus arrearage. The document she filed is called a “Verified Entry of Judgment”.
Upon being notified of this fact by the court, my sister’s ex came to her with a side deal of sorts. He wanted her to sign a document (which they would have notarized), whereby she would agree to receive 12 monthly lump sum payments which amount to roughly 60% of back child support, minus arrearage, after which time my sister would grant him settlement for his debt. I am no lawyer (and by the way, I know you are not my lawyer), but something tells me that even if my sister were to sign this document, it would be in no fashion legally enforceable. How can two parties renegotiate something a court of law has already ruled upon, without first bringing the matter back to the court again? Who would enforce penalties should her ex fail to make timely payments? I think my former brother in law is a dork, and hasn’t a legal leg to stand on. My hunch is that she shouldn't sign it, because it could only complicate matters further, but I was hoping for some further insight.

What can I do to legally stop exploratory natural gas drilling within 1000 feet of my neighborhood?

What can I do to legally stop exploratory natural gas drilling within 1000 feet of my neighborhood? There is a local activism group, FRERC. However, they seem to be focusing on slowing the drilling down and asking the company to adhere to EPA standards. Which scares me to death.

The drilling would occur in the National Forest in Colorado. Because of the location, Dyad Petroleum Corporation would be exempt to EPA rules - such as what affects will occur to the water aquifers in this area. Thousands of residents water supply will be effected.

The drilling permits allow up to 465 drilling wells within visibility of my neighborhood. The compressors alone would be LOUD. Property values? Right.

I want to step it up. I want to make noise. Heck, I want Ed Begley to come chain himself to a tree with me.

What can I do from here? How can I utilize the 'net to call attention to this problem?

First roadtrip ever

In two months I'll be going to a conference in Denver, CO. I want to drive there. I am a new driver (at age 30, and have owned my car for six weeks). Really, I've been on a ton of long roadtrips before -- but never driving, and never by myself. Can I make the 18-hour trip?? Any tips? Google Maps says the total drive time is 18 hours, so I've planned on the drive taking 2 (or 3) days. I'll probably stay in hotels rather than camp. The previous AskMe threads about long-distance driving have been VERY helpful. So far my longest drive-time has been 1.5 hours, so I will need to practice -- if I learn to drive 6 hours at a time, will 9 feel about the same? Are there any scary stretches of road on I-80 W//I-76 between Michigan and Colorado? What else should I know to become an experienced driver who just happens to be new to all of this?

Where to stop in Colorado?

Where do we stop on a roadtrip through Colorado? Kitchy, awe inspiring, vomit inducing, we're up for whatever. I'm headed off on a multi-state roadtrip with my pops. We're starting in West Texas and then going up through NM, out to the grand canyon, up into Bryce, etc... Plenty to do in those states, but I'm having trouble finding sweet stuff to stop and hit on the way through Colorado, basically from Bryce Canyon on out to CarHenge in Eastern Nebraska.

Any Ideas?

We're then going back to Boston, so any ideas along the way (Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, etc...) would be great.

Thanks!

Northern Colorado Day Trips/ July 4th festivities?

Where should I go for a day/overnight trip around Estes Park, Colorado, in early July? These may or may not be the same question, but I'm looking for two recommendations for an upcoming trip to northern Colorado.

My family will be in Estes Park the week of June 29th, and my boyfriend and I would like to take a day/overnight trip while we're there. What would you recommend that's within 3 hours or so of Estes Park? Fossils? Springs? Museums? Wacky rock formations? Things worth doing in Denver? Specific lodging recommendations welcome.

Part 2 is that we'll probably be there for the 4th of July, so any recommendations regarding where we can see (and ideally photograph) a nice fireworks display? Does Denver do anything interesting? Red Rocks maybe? Smaller towns with better scenery?

Thanks for any help!

Where is a good place in Colorado to take a kayaking/camping trip?

Where is a good place in Colorado to take a kayaking/camping trip? Me and a few buddies (all of whom have limited kayaking experience but do have a lot of camping experience) are looking for a place this summer to do a 3 day kayaking/camping trip.

We'd like to possibly go the river route and kayak down portions of the river, camp, then kayak again, etc etc.

Where in Colorado would be the best place to do this? We're all in Denver, so some place within a few hours of driving would be preferable.

Recommendations for B&Bs in CO high country

Steamboat Springs, CO Filter: I want to plan a weekend getaway for my loving hubby and I to a bed and breakfast in or around Steamboat. We are total foodies and live for amazing breakfasts. I've done some preliminary research, but it's hard to tell from websites, etc. how the experience will really be. Can anyone recommend a bed and breakfast in the area where you had an incredible experience overall, but with the food in particular? Technically, we are open to going else in the CO high country. So if you had an unforgettable experience in some other easy-to-get-to-from-Denver B&B, by all means, tell me all about it!

Thanks in advance!

Politics and environmental issues in the US Southwest: good sources for news and gossip?

Anyone follow environmental issues or general politics in the US Southwest (AZ, NM, UT, CO)? I'm trying to get a crash course about what's happening in the region and then stay up to speed. What are the best sources for political gossip? For environmental news about the region? All I've got so far are the major newspapers, High Country News, and a couple (rarely updated) blogs.

I'm most curious about the key environmental and regional planning issues in the southwest now. Who are the big players (nonprofits, state agencies, cities, others), and what are they working on?

I realize this is a broad question, but anything will be much appreciated. I work on these sorts of issues in the Bay Area, and since I love the US Southwest, I wish I had a better understanding of what is going on down there.

What Proof for Colorado Hybrid Tax Credit?

What proof do I need to claim the Colorado Alternative Fuel Vehicle Credit on my taxes? I've done my taxes, and have a Prius I'm claiming, but it is totally unclear as to what if any proof they want with my return.

The FYI describing it has two sections. The first is for individuals, and the second is for Government and Charitable organizations. The Gov and Charities section has some forms listed, but they don't seem to match up with individual returns.

Then while searching, I ran across this (about.com, a great source!) that mentions how you must file a paper return in order to attach an invoice to the return. But of course, I don't trust my taxes to about.com.

Does anybody have the publication/law that describes what sort of proof Colorado is looking for?

Help me head for the hills.

Need help finding traditional mountain/snow lodge-type getaway in the U.S. Think the lodge from The Shining (without all the REDRUM). The wife and I need to get away. We don't ski, but would like to spend a few days in the snow/mountains of Colorado, Utah or Wyoming in November. The destination I have in mind is a lodge with activities/attractions onsite or within walking distance. Emphasis on relaxation, not skiing.

How to adjust to high altitude?

Will the altitude of Denver have a negative effect on my father's ability to breathe? My father has planned a trip to Denver, and he is worried that he will have trouble breathing while he is there. He has congestive heart failure, and one way or another (it may be some of the medication), this has greatly reduced his lung function. He gets around just fine, but he has trouble breathing after walking longish distances, after climbing stairs, and on very humid days. Does the altitude have a noticeable effect on one's breathing? If so, any tips on how he might adjust to this?

Colorado Convention Center: Decent Cell Coverage?

What kind of cell phone reception do you get in Denver's Colorado Convention Center? We're possibly involved in a conference there in a few weeks, and a project we're doing hinges on coverage good enough to send and receive SMS in the convention center. I've heard that it's "spotty" in the below-ground parts of the center, but that could mean anything ... is it good enough to deal with hundreds of attendees bouncing text messages back & forth? Ideally, we need to know ASAP. =)
