Was going to paint the baby's room orange, now realize that it's TOO orange. So now we have an orange accent wall. What goes with orange? I fear I've painted myself into a corner... [more inside]
I've been fooling around with Procreate a little bit recently, and it's great! But I find "blending" between two colors with the HSL-space color picker pretty difficult. Is there a smarter way of doing this that I'm missing? [more inside]
My six-year-old son asked me a question I'm stumped by (one of many). He asked "Why are there different colors?" I half-attempted an explanation about light wavelengths and light reflecting off surfaces and soon realized I was a) over his head and b) over my own head. How would you explain the concept of color--of what color really is--to a six-year-old? Obviously very simple language is needed here.
What are some questions you ask yourself when you decide on a cut and color situation for your hair? I'm curious about what any gender considers--things like how flattering to your face, how it curls in this one specific place, that it makes you look younger/older, that your workplace requires a certain look...etc. What motivates you to get one hairstyle over another? I had a really bad bout of pneumonia in December, spent ten days in the hospital. Meanwhile my hair does its thing. [more inside]
Need to get a new printer that can output graphic design pages at good quality, suggestions for one that'll be economical and last? Requirements on the inside. [more inside]
Our bathroom is mauve and gray. Nothing major is in the cards as far as renovation. Is it possible to make mauve and gray work, and if so, how. [more inside]
I may have had a home hair color mishap! Help me fix it, or live with it (am open to convincing that caramel is a hot color trend)? [more inside]
What is the difference in English between "The flowers are white" and "The flowers are white in colour"? Scientific texts (such as botanical descriptions) seem to prefer and add "in colour" after the colour name though it is redundant. Form wins the Google fight by a large margin and the Ngram for "white in color" shows a downward trend since the 1920s. Is it now OK to drop the "in colour" in contemporary (scientific) texts?
Are there any books, magazines, or websites that might help the design-challenged pick colors during a complete kitchen remodel or new house construction? We'd like to be able to flip through pictures of various home interiors - most importantly the kitchen but also other rooms - to help us decide on the colors of our cabinets and floors. Google images hasn't been terribly useful.
I am looking for a reading lamp which closely imitates the light of a single candle. [more inside]
How should I accessorize a solid colored dress without looking like a mismatched bag lady? [more inside]
My wife's deskjet is dying and I'm using a 17-year old laserjet for printing so it's time to upgrade our home printers. I'd like to get a networked color laser printer that I can just plug into our ethernet and print from both our PCs or a laptop on the wireless (we're a primarily PC household but have the occasional mac laptop). I'd ideally like a printer that can do double sided printing as well. [more inside]
Where (besides Manic Panic, ugh) can I buy funky, semi-permanent hair dyes in Los Angeles? Preferably today? [more inside]
We recently acquired this record player console from family. I had the genius idea to paint it to go with our decor more effectively... And now it looks like this. I am displeased as I feel it looks like children's furniture. Help me fix it please! [more inside]
Marker or fabric paint that will last well on flexible, heavy-use surfaces? Difficulty: I need it in a really unsaturated color like a soft medium grey or greyish blue. [more inside]
What outside-the-box-color nail polish would best accent a black cocktail dress (with silver accent beading) and silver shoes? [more inside]
After reading a recommendation here for the utterly delightful Ms. Rumphius, I started thinking about kids books about travel that I used to enjoy. When I was a kid I loved a picture book about a kingdom where everyone had to wear black all the time because the prince or princess had died and the kingdom was in mourning, and an apprentice tailor traveled the world by boat and learned about clothing in different cultures and eventually came home and made beautiful colorful clothing for everyone in the kingdom and the sadness over the kingdom was lifted. I have searched and searched and can't remember anything more about it. Can anyone remember? It was a lovely book and I would like to share it with my daughter.
My wife wants to make a 10 x 12 square quilt with a random-looking pattern. How many colors would she need for a quilt that follows these rules: 1) No two patches of the same color may touch each other, vertically, horizontally, or diagonally; 2) No pair of patches may be repeated in the same orientation (i.e., if there is a red patch above a blue patch, that combination may not be repeated, but you may have a blue patch above a red patch); 3) There are no patches of the same color that have the same vertical and horizontal offset: i.e., if there is a red patch with a second red patch that is one down and two across, there may not be a third red patch that's the same distance down and across from that second patch.
All my Google searches either tell me how to cover up the gray or go to completely white/silver. Is there any in-between? [more inside]

During the holidays, I came back from visiting my family with about 2,300 of my Dad’s old slides that I’m in the process of scanning. I’ve read through several online tutorials about how to restore the color on faded slides, but I haven’t had much success replicating them. [more inside]
This is driving me batty. In the last year or three I heard a story on NPR about color. I would have heard the story on a Saturday afternoon (I don't know if that helps). The topics ranged from people who can (in theory) see colors that most people can't, the history of dyes and the names we give colors, etc. The narrator tested a theory on his daughter regarding color. Like, he didn't ever mention the color blue to see if she could figure it out on her own. Can anyone help me find this story? thanks in advance, Andres
Why these 10 colors? [more inside]
It's time to paint the living room. Problem: we have light wood floors with dark furnishings and my SO wants to keep the room "light and airy" whereas I would do anything to avoid white or eggshell walls and keep pushing for colors he says are "too dark and claustrophobic". What color scheme can we both agree on to really tie the room together? [more inside]
Many years ago I had a fabulous lentil soup in a very nice Greek restaurant (in Greece) whose owners/chefs were Cretan, and which used many ingredients from Crete (which may or may not be pertinent to my question). This soup was very, very dark, like mahogany colored, rich but not thick, and fairly "oily" (which sounds bad, but it was heavenly), and it was soooo good. Now, all lentil soup is good, really. Mine is quite marvelous, but I've been remembering this soup for so long, and have never figured out how it acquired that color, or what ingredient(s) made it so different and special. Any ideas? I am looking for kids books that depict fairies that aren't all white. Sometimes, one can find some variation in hair color - but little in the way of anything that doesn't look classically european. I am mainly looking for books for little kids, Dr. Seuss reading level.
The nut of the question/problem is this: When I use high-contrast mode in Windows 7, people are receiving emails from me where the text is blank. Is this because windows 7 changes the font to white for me to see it, and then emails that same font to users who have white backgrounds? How can I fix this? I really don't want to ask for special software accommodation at work. I'm private and would really rather just fix it on my own and move on. Snowflakes abound inside. [more inside]
Physics geeks! Help me save energy! How do I estimate how much less energy will be used by light siding vs gray siding, based on an experiment with small boxes? I made some identical boxes, put them in the sun, measured temperatures, and am trying to figure out how to scale up. The net has info about different roof colors, but not siding colors. Just like it sounds above - for some reason this has been much more difficult than expected. More inside, naturally. [more inside]
I'm horrible at color matching and I envy the HGTV shows that color board everything so you can see what it looks like ahead of time. I've just finished decorating my living room with a couch and I think the walls are too bare. Should I do an accent wall or some wall pattern? [more inside]

What is the best color printer for the following use case: photos up to 5x7 of patients pre/post operation. The images will not be used for diagnosis so there is no requirement for ultra-high-quality, but the images must still be decent. Must be Mac compatible. We cannot use a professional lab as the images will be confidential. Not sure what kind of spend is required here but I'd be surprised if there wasn't something suitable under $500.
Short question that has me stumped. What colour belt with these shoes? They are a reddish brown/oxblood colour. I don't own an oxblood belt, must I buy one?

At my wedding I'm planning to have each table named and themed around a different colour. I would like to put a poem relating to the colour on the table. The problem is, the only poem I have come up with is 'a red, red rose' by Robert Burns which is exactly what I'm looking for, but I have 7 more colours to find. Please give me poems that feature a colour (any colour apart from grey or black) and have a general theme of love and/or marriage.
I need some suggestions for a paint color for our sunroom. There is lots of light, a wood floor with medium tones and the furniture we have out there is brown and an orangish rust color. The rest of the house is mostly neutral, but we can go with a bold color if it would work well.
I'd like a PC emulator for the Casio CFX-9800G 3-color graphic calculator. Is there one? Where can I get it? [more inside]

I've been cutting my hair very short, and discovered that while I didn't mind my graying hair when it was a normal length, it is much grayer-looking when cut this close and does not look good in combination with my untanned white scalp. Can someone point out good hair color products for white guys with extremely short hair? [more inside]
Bathroom renovation snafu. The adobe-colored corian stripes in the shower don't quite work with the dark brown floor tile. [more inside]
At work we want to put up a certain type of pantone color chart on the website so that people can at least see approximate colors. I'm well aware of the issues with precise matching using a computer monitor; we just want to provide some general reference so that people can see what colors we're talking about if we give them a PMS number. Can someone recommend a specific pleasant white-ish or neutral shade of paint that I can use on my walls repeatedly for like, forever? [more inside]
Why do so many of the pictures I see on Craigslist look like they were shot through three layers of blue saran wrap? [more inside]
This post on the blue reminded me of a site i saw some time back. Essentially, you picked up to, I believe, three colors, and the app would find images all across the web that matched those colors. [more inside]

I'm curious what the most frequently purchased colors are for regular, non-jean pants for men. I was discussing this with a colleague today, and guessed black and navy. I'm looking specifically for industry numbers or anecdotal evidence from those working in clothing manufacturing or sales. (I already guessed!) Thanks in advance.
We've just moved into a cute rental house in Hillcrest, San Diego and our front patio is absolutely begging for a cute little bistro table and chairs. I'm looking for suggestions with a budget of no more than $150 and we're perfectly willing to use Craigslist or eBay. My question is, what colors would go best with the current paint scheme? My instinct is that black would probably work, but it seems like we could do better. Here is the house. The planters can be moved or removed entirely.
I seem to recall at one point finding a website where you could type in the URL of a webpage or image and it would give you the prominent colours, with hex codes, etc. Does this actually exist or was I dreaming?
