I got my light brown hair highlighted last week and the stylist did exactly the opposite of what I asked. Now that I've blown my whole hair budget on nothing, I want to try to achieve my original blonde hair wishes at home. [more inside]
When you go to a website in Chrome, there's a flash of the default white non-website before the website itself loads. I've figured out how to change the default colors of the website itself (there's an app for that), but not for that first flash. Or for popups, evidently (thank you MeFi for giving me the opportunity to learn that now!). That white screen before the page loads is not only blinding, but also often triggers both facial pain and migraines. I'd really like it to be darker - anything would help, dark gray or black preferred. Help?

Hi, parents of young children. I've been commissioned to design and format a series of small books aimed at you and your kind. How do you want it to look? [more inside]
I'm looking for information on the psychological and physiological effects on humans of exposure to different colored light or an environment lit only by a single light color. There's a plethora of (poorly sourced) information about things like "color therapy" and (unsubstantiated) claims that "red light makes you angry" but virtually nothing that's backed up by any actual research or explanations of how it works.
I need to do a presentation of a new website to some serious bigwigs, so I want to make sure that the colors presented are as spot-on as possible. Can anyone offer up advice on how to calibrate my 4000 ANSI Lumens projector so that the colors projected will most closely the original web design?
My brother-in-law who is a guitarist and guitar collector wants to paint a pre-CBS Fender Stratocaster in the original 'Sonic Blue' colour that the company sold in the early 1960s (used by John Lennon amongst others). The trouble is that if you google this you end up with several different versions of the colour that vary in terms of their blue/green balance, saturation etc. So the question is, without getting into the philosophy of colour perception, is there an easy way to obtain the right colour of paint? Does anyone have good matches for the Fuscia/Magenta-ish colors used by DEC for their (very) old PDP series of computers? I'm trying to use the colors and am looking for near matches. Optimally, I'd love to find what DEC themselves would have used for promotional materials, as well as paint mixture codes if I wanted to paint stripes of matching colors on my walls. ;)
Was going to paint the baby's room orange, now realize that it's TOO orange. So now we have an orange accent wall. What goes with orange? I fear I've painted myself into a corner... [more inside]
I've been fooling around with Procreate a little bit recently, and it's great! But I find "blending" between two colors with the HSL-space color picker pretty difficult. Is there a smarter way of doing this that I'm missing? [more inside]
My six-year-old son asked me a question I'm stumped by (one of many). He asked "Why are there different colors?" I half-attempted an explanation about light wavelengths and light reflecting off surfaces and soon realized I was a) over his head and b) over my own head. How would you explain the concept of color--of what color really is--to a six-year-old? Obviously very simple language is needed here.
What are some questions you ask yourself when you decide on a cut and color situation for your hair? I'm curious about what any gender considers--things like how flattering to your face, how it curls in this one specific place, that it makes you look younger/older, that your workplace requires a certain look...etc. What motivates you to get one hairstyle over another? What is the difference in English between "The flowers are white" and "The flowers are white in colour"? Scientific texts (such as botanical descriptions) seem to prefer and add "in colour" after the colour name though it is redundant. Form wins the Google fight by a large margin and the Ngram for "white in color" shows a downward trend since the 1920s. Is it now OK to drop the "in colour" in contemporary (scientific) texts?
Are there any books, magazines, or websites that might help the design-challenged pick colors during a complete kitchen remodel or new house construction? We'd like to be able to flip through pictures of various home interiors - most importantly the kitchen but also other rooms - to help us decide on the colors of our cabinets and floors. Google images hasn't been terribly useful.

My wife's deskjet is dying and I'm using a 17-year old laserjet for printing so it's time to upgrade our home printers. I'd like to get a networked color laser printer that I can just plug into our ethernet and print from both our PCs or a laptop on the wireless (we're a primarily PC household but have the occasional mac laptop). I'd ideally like a printer that can do double sided printing as well. [more inside]

After reading a recommendation here for the utterly delightful Ms. Rumphius, I started thinking about kids books about travel that I used to enjoy. When I was a kid I loved a picture book about a kingdom where everyone had to wear black all the time because the prince or princess had died and the kingdom was in mourning, and an apprentice tailor traveled the world by boat and learned about clothing in different cultures and eventually came home and made beautiful colorful clothing for everyone in the kingdom and the sadness over the kingdom was lifted. I have searched and searched and can't remember anything more about it. Can anyone remember? It was a lovely book and I would like to share it with my daughter.
My wife wants to make a 10 x 12 square quilt with a random-looking pattern. How many colors would she need for a quilt that follows these rules: 1) No two patches of the same color may touch each other, vertically, horizontally, or diagonally; 2) No pair of patches may be repeated in the same orientation (i.e., if there is a red patch above a blue patch, that combination may not be repeated, but you may have a blue patch above a red patch); 3) There are no patches of the same color that have the same vertical and horizontal offset: i.e., if there is a red patch with a second red patch that is one down and two across, there may not be a third red patch that's the same distance down and across from that second patch.

During the holidays, I came back from visiting my family with about 2,300 of my Dad’s old slides that I’m in the process of scanning. I’ve read through several online tutorials about how to restore the color on faded slides, but I haven’t had much success replicating them. [more inside]
This is driving me batty. In the last year or three I heard a story on NPR about color. I would have heard the story on a Saturday afternoon (I don't know if that helps). The topics ranged from people who can (in theory) see colors that most people can't, the history of dyes and the names we give colors, etc. The narrator tested a theory on his daughter regarding color. Like, he didn't ever mention the color blue to see if she could figure it out on her own. Can anyone help me find this story? thanks in advance, Andres

It's time to paint the living room. Problem: we have light wood floors with dark furnishings and my SO wants to keep the room "light and airy" whereas I would do anything to avoid white or eggshell walls and keep pushing for colors he says are "too dark and claustrophobic". What color scheme can we both agree on to really tie the room together? [more inside]
Many years ago I had a fabulous lentil soup in a very nice Greek restaurant (in Greece) whose owners/chefs were Cretan, and which used many ingredients from Crete (which may or may not be pertinent to my question). This soup was very, very dark, like mahogany colored, rich but not thick, and fairly "oily" (which sounds bad, but it was heavenly), and it was soooo good. Now, all lentil soup is good, really. Mine is quite marvelous, but I've been remembering this soup for so long, and have never figured out how it acquired that color, or what ingredient(s) made it so different and special. Any ideas? I am looking for kids books that depict fairies that aren't all white. Sometimes, one can find some variation in hair color - but little in the way of anything that doesn't look classically european. I am mainly looking for books for little kids, Dr. Seuss reading level.
The nut of the question/problem is this: When I use high-contrast mode in Windows 7, people are receiving emails from me where the text is blank. Is this because windows 7 changes the font to white for me to see it, and then emails that same font to users who have white backgrounds? How can I fix this? I really don't want to ask for special software accommodation at work. I'm private and would really rather just fix it on my own and move on. Snowflakes abound inside. [more inside]
Physics geeks! Help me save energy! How do I estimate how much less energy will be used by light siding vs gray siding, based on an experiment with small boxes? I made some identical boxes, put them in the sun, measured temperatures, and am trying to figure out how to scale up. The net has info about different roof colors, but not siding colors. What is the best color printer for the following use case: photos up to 5x7 of patients pre/post operation. The images will not be used for diagnosis so there is no requirement for ultra-high-quality, but the images must still be decent. Must be Mac compatible. We cannot use a professional lab as the images will be confidential. Not sure what kind of spend is required here but I'd be surprised if there wasn't something suitable under $500.

At my wedding I'm planning to have each table named and themed around a different colour. I would like to put a poem relating to the colour on the table. The problem is, the only poem I have come up with is 'a red, red rose' by Robert Burns which is exactly what I'm looking for, but I have 7 more colours to find. Please give me poems that feature a colour (any colour apart from grey or black) and have a general theme of love and/or marriage.
I need some suggestions for a paint color for our sunroom. There is lots of light, a wood floor with medium tones and the furniture we have out there is brown and an orangish rust color. The rest of the house is mostly neutral, but we can go with a bold color if it would work well.
