I distinctly remember Drakkar Noir as being the cologne of choice in my high school years, and suspected that it was a kind of rite of passage to manhood. I don't think that many of my male classmates actually had to shave often enough to justify the purchase of other fragranced items, but they definitely sprayed Cool Water and Drakkar Noir when going to dances or on dates. Is this something that young guys still do and why did everyone in my age group (mid-30s) stop wearing cologne? Is there a U curve to men's fragrance usage over time? Are guys in their late teens and retirees over 70 years of age the most likely fragrance wearers or is that just a sampling error in my universe? What are the social norms for using cologne? How have those norms changed over the last 50 years?
I have a very very niche job. I've been doing it for over ten years now and have made about $28,000 per year. Because of my experience, I was called in for a meet and greet. It was going to lead nowhere. So, I pretty much blew it off, and blew the next one off, and showed up to the third because it was on my way home. They hired me and gave me a job that pays about $786,000 per year. I was told that they had reservations about me and told me they were bothered by the fact that I wore "denim with unpatched holes" at the interview. I didn't even think I was being considered. This is very unreal. And now I will have a job that pays me more in my bimonthly check than my last year's entire gross. I will be working with a different clientele, and my position will have more prestige than previously. So how do I dress? [more inside]
I received a nice bar of soap as a holiday gift and I really like the particular cedar wood smell. So much so that I want to convert it, one way or another, into a wearable fragrance. How can I do this? [more inside]
Last night at a social event, a person seated at my table had to leave because my scent was bothering her. Her eyes were tearing and she was obviously uncomfortable. Am I doing it wrong? [more inside]
I’ve worn the same cologne off and on for about 20 years, and I think it’s time for a change. I’m looking for scents for everyday wear with woody notes (or citrus/fresh notes, like what I wear now). Nothing musky or spicy! [more inside]
Do you use Hermes perfumes? Do you like them? Can you explain them to me? I'm not a typical perfume wearer. I recently tried the Hermes fragrance Un Jardin Sur Le Toit at a friend's house and I really liked it. Then I started googling and found myself in a world of top notes, drydowns, accords, and other things where I don't even know what the words mean, much less how to understand them. Can you help me? ~10 years ago, I used to wear a cologne that came in a smooth, rounded rectangular grey aluminum bottle with a white front. Very Apple-esque. I can't remember what kind it was now. Any help?
A guy sat next to me on the bus the other day and his cologne smelled like that of a sexy lumberjack: a really subtle mix of Christmas trees, sweet smoke, and dude sweat. I'd like to compile a list of piney-smokey-sweaty colognes to test out so that I can gift my own lumberjack with a similar scent! [more inside]

I am not normally a cologne person, but I found one that I love. Even my scent-averse lady likes it. Tell me how to wear it. Assume I am total idiot, does it go on the skin (or clothes)? Where? How much? Can I apply over a moisturizer? Need I reapply later in the day? [more inside]

I may purchase some train tickets that would have me staying at Cologne Hauptbahnhof from 0200-0600 early on a Saturday morning in August - is this a horrible idea, or might it actually be a positive experience as layovers go? [more inside]
Help me find a nice/funny/not insane way to tell a guy I just started seeing that he's wearing too much cologne for me. Maybe I'm like this previous asker, but I find myself thinking things like, "ok, I'll sleep with him once and THEN tell him," which I know is kind of crazy. (Mostly because I'd rather not smell his cologne on my sheets for weeks after.) Is it ok to tell someone you just met that your lizard brain would like him a LOT better if he toned down the artificial scenting? I'm gay, if that matters, but any relevant experience or advice is welcome. Have you ever dealt with this situation successfully? [more inside]

Is it possible to get cologne smell out of clothing? I kind of "inherited" a half-dozen nice sweaters that reek of perfume, and I'm allergic as well. I've tried mucho baking soda and soaking in the wash machine; haven't tried vinegar yet; past (somewhat related) threads suggest Ozium and Synthrapol, but they're really not for this purpose.

Wikipedia says that petrichor is " the name of the yellow organic oil that causes the familiar scent of rain on dry earth". The article also mentions that perfumes have been produced from it. Which perfumes? Are there synthetic perfumes that come close? Failing that I'm looking for an interesting men's cologne with strong bergamont notes.
As a guy, how do you smell really good without the use of cologne? Some people, I've noticed, have a great fresh smell to them, but I'm not sure how they get it. I try using scented soaps, but it doesn't give nearly as strong an effect. Is it lotion? Does skin type matter?

Why does a brand-new bottle of cologne smell very different (and not in a good way) from a small sample vial of the same? i just bought a bottle of Terre d'Hermes (which I think is wonderful, and great on me) based on how great the sample vial I got on eBay smelled. The "real thing" is a lot less sharp and the layers are a lot muddier. It actually smells like it could be a knockoff! WTF? (a little more inside) [more inside]
I need help locating a certain brand of cologne requested as a charity gift. The request is from a 14 year old male, and who wants "Sexy" cologne for men. On-line searches just seem to turn up "Very Sexy for Him" by Victoria's Secret. I'm not sure that is the right one. Any ideas, or thoughts on possibly substitutions? I know from my teacher friends that Axe body spray is all the rage with teen boys right now.
