What percentage of students who take a "break" from college end up returning? For example, say someone plans to take a year off to work. How often do people actually return to college after that?

I failed out of two colleges while attending as a traditional-aged student (teen-20's) for academic problems, but I do have many credits from the classes I managed to pass. As a 26-year-old adult, what are my chances for getting into a competitive school now that I have my head on straight and would like to return? I'm interested in studying linguistics, which is offered at only the toughest schools (UVA, William and Mary) in my state, and would need to stay in-state for financial, family, and health reasons.

I'm looking to setup some 529 plans for my young kids to save for college. My state's plan doesn't have any extra tax benefits so I'm looking elsewhere. Jane Bryant Quinn likes Utah's plan because the costs are low. I've been using savingforcollege.com for information, but there are a lot of choices, and I'm not sure of all the ramifications of each.
I'm looking for any thoughts regarding 529s and the States with the best plans.
I'm from Massachusetts.

Has anyone dropped out of school or taken a significant amount of time off and done something exotic? I can't stand college anymore. I know that most jobs I could get out of the US, or even in remote and interesting places within the US, would require some sort of skill, so what sorts of things should I work on now? What kinds of opportunities should I know about?
I went to college for two semesters, decided that I was sick of being schooled after 19 years and took a semester off to travel through Asia by myself. I did, and came back full of fervor for learning and seeing my friends again.

I'm a 22 year old college student in a fraternity and have just been elected social chair, which pretty much means setting up parties with other organizations. To spice things up, we usually set some kind of theme for each bender. So far, we've been given ideas like:
* tour de franzia (drink just franzia wine)
* ultimate flip cup championship
* country club aka golf pros, tennis hoes
* walk of shame
* trends gone bad
* anything but clothes party
* gi joes and barbie hoes
* white trash trailer bash

College is expensive. I'm resigned to accumulating a certain amount of debt, but I'm increasingly afraid I may not make it through four years with my credit rating intact. I'm quickly becoming cynical about the high price of education in America. Advice?

I'd like to start taking non-credit classes now to strengthen my application, meet professors who could write letters of recommendation, and not least of all, make sure I really want to do this!

[Internship filter] Any ideas for a summer internship for a college student? Here are her stats: not a U.S. citizen, but can work in the U.S.; native speaker of Russian and Turkmen, fluent speaker of English and Turkish, moderate speaker of Spanish; business major; very personable; college sophomore. Paid internship would be best, but any place that could lead to a future job would be good.

Help me find school-spirited shoes! My girlfriend and I are both students at the University of Washington. My girlfriend instantly fell in love with them and we've been trying to find them everywhere to no avail.
