Video games about universities and academic life

I'm looking for example of digital or video games - either online, free, commercial, or bought from a shop, on a PC, mac or games console - which simulate the experience of being a student, academic, lecturer or professor from an academic, social, or economic perspective. For example, the Sims 3 University Life expansion pack gives a (relatively shallow) social perspective on academic life as a student. Are there any others, especially ones with more depth or accuracy?

Eyeing a career change from Engineering: Am I being reckless?

I recently graduated and I've been working as a Jr. Engineer for a few months now. I realize now that this is not a career/field I want to be in and have been strongly thinking about going back to school to get a Computer Science degree. The problem is that I have 35k in loans from my previous degree and I need to make a decision soon. Am I being reckless for wanting to do a career change so soon? [more inside]

Should my math student have some Unix skills?

I think my son, who is on an AP math trajectory in high school, would benefit from getting some familiarity and basic programming skills in the Unix world. I've noticed math depts in some universities include study of these skills in early years. Are there some tutorials we could use in the OS X environment to get a leg up? [more inside]

I bit off more than I can chew. How do I deal with a potential F?

I've been overwhelmed with personal issues and professional involvement this semester, and I completely dropped the ball in one of my classes. The term project is due in a few days, and I think I might be unable to complete it, which would mean failing. I am a good student. This has never happened to me before. How do I address this situation? Details inside. [more inside]

Bad semester, discouraging. How to bounce back?

So after reaching the unpleasant realization that even if I get a 4.0 this semester, my GPA won't be as high as it was before my horrible Semester Of 2012. I am a Junior and planning to apply to med school after a gap year, so now is REALLY not the time to hit a downward trend. I had a string of grades lower than I usually perform to, and I am SO discouraged right now. I know it's my fault and I take full responsibility... [more inside]

Up the creek without a paddle!

Was lied to by my school about my degree-- required to commute--got a (not so random) grant from my college for transportation costs. Then I received a not-so-nice e-mail about my financial aid. Affordable student health insurance in New York?

I have recently lost my health insurance. While it is possible I will be reinstated to the plan I lost, which is provided in conjunction with my school, I need to be insured again ASAP, and I don't mind the possibility of doubling up on insurance for a short period of time. New Yorkers, do you know of any affordable (<$500 or so per month) plans I might be eligible for? I am a full time college student. [more inside]

Help an ENTP narrow down their career path choices....

In the last couple months I've come to realize that I am not alone. My personality is my problem and it is what has made this post-college thing so hard on me. ENTPs are sort of visionaries who can be the best and innovate and succeed at anything we put our heart to but we get bored very easily if we aren't socially, creatively satisfied and doing some "analysis" or "innovation" or "problem solving". We also don't take well to being "told what to do". (Sort of like a cross between Steve Jobs (visionary, creative, secretly self-obsessed) Calvin (from the comic), Jack Sparrow, The Joker, and Wile E. Coyote. ) [more inside]

Do I accept a Greenpeace Internship? But first, $4000 More Student Debt!

I'm an Environmental Policy & Planning Major (3rd year). I've been applying to internships over the past weeks for Spring and Summer positions. Great news: I've already been accepted to Greenpeace's "Organizing Term" and I have two other positions I will soon hear a yes/no on for Spring. Bad News: The Greenpeace Organizing Term program will cost me $4000. The program itself is an intensive mix of activities, virtually on a full-time basis (for 2 months of summer, out of 3), including classroom trainings, expeditions to other states (as well as another country for meeting with other international activists), media trainings, and some readings. All of it is included with the cost (including flight/transport/food for a week). What to do? (More in the extended explanation): [more inside]
