I'm looking for information for applying to grad school while abroad. (PhD programs in Political Science/International Relations). I graduated from college in spring 2006, and I'm planning on applying next year (Fall '09) to start in Fall 2010. I'm also considering going to Israel in July and staying for about 10 months, and I want to make sure this won't impact my grad school plans in any way. [more inside]

I've decided that I want to start getting my life together by working on earning a degree in computer science. To do that, I'm going to start attending the local community college full time this fall, in order to cover some basic classes, and then transfer to full university later when I'm a bit more transfer-worthy. Now I need help figuring out how to best manage my money so as not to accrue too much debt in the process. Ideally I'd like to get as much financial aid as possible to cover this, but there are a few issues. [more inside]

I'm currently a senior undergrad planning on graduating in May. My majors are biology and history, but I'll be working in finance after graduation with a large firm in NYC (and I already have a job lined up). After meeting with an advisor this week, I realized that the "perspective classes" (classes outside my majors that are required for graduation) I had taken to complete the requirements for my bachelors of science in biology are different from those required for my bachelors of arts in history. Blogging in the classroom. I've decided to set-up a blog for my students this semester. This will be the place for their response papers, writing exercises and a few other tidbits. I'm a full-time college sophomore. I'm working full time, 35 hours a week, to try and make ends meet but I'm having a hard time. I know there was another thread on loans earlier, but my situation is different.
The disbursement I get from the federal student loan programs is not enough to cover my tuition itself, and the extra cost of room, board, books and other necessities is eating in and I'm beginning to run up serious credit card debt. My parents make enough money to keep me from getting grants or financial need scholarships, but they will not help me with school, nor will they co-sign a 3rd party loan. I live in a very cheap apartment and take the bus to school, and I've cut food and entertainment expenses to the minimums. I talked to the financial aid office and they said that there was nothing they could do except offer me a position on campus (for less hours and the same money as my current job) or give me a list of 3rd party loan providers. I called the providers, but they all rejected me because I'm too young (21), single and don't have a cosigner.
What do I do? I feel like I'm being punished for trying to go to school.

Graduate school acceptance. Or really, not. I need some advice from all of you over-educated metafilterites. What do you do when you don't get accepted to your first choice graduate school? Besides, obviously, not attend. Have any of you had any luck with reapplying, and if so, what did you change on your application to "do the trick?" Anyone have luck with taking classes as a non-matriculated student just to get your foot in the door? Any advice is much appreciated.
