Looking beyond the Ivy League

I'm a relatively qualified senior beginning the college application process. I'm looking for general college application advice, but more specifically, I'm afraid the list I've been making leans too heavily on the high end of the spectrum so I would like recommendations for well-reputed but not necessarily top tier colleges and universities. Failing grades == academic misconduct: true or false?

My friend is applying to university after dropping out of a different school a few years ago. At his previous school he was placed on academic suspension for a semester due to absenteeism and low grades. The Common App he's now filling out asks if he's ever been disciplined for academic misconduct. Does this qualify? Should he answer yes or no? More details below, including the exact wording of the question: [more inside]

An application fee for college?

My son is a senior in high school, and has been very lazy about applying to colleges. He's an art major, and is interested in attending the Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago. So, he started the application last night, and then asked me for 50.00. They charge for applications? Should that be a warning sign about the quality of the school? [more inside]

I don't remember much of High School, but I don't believe my transcripts that I was on the Ladies' Tennis Team.

My high school transcripts have major errors in them and no one in the school system wants to help me fix them! I'm pretty sure I had more than a 0.0 GPA and I know wasn't on the girls' tennis team! (I'm a guy, I think I would remember the skirts!) Will this effect my chances at returning to college? [more inside]

Early admission to Cambridge when you're not the Prime Minister's son: how was it done?

For a book, I'm looking for descriptions of historical admission/matriculation procedures for a young man wanting to enroll himself at an English university. An 18th century source relating to Cambridge would be perfect, but anything that describes how things were handled 100+ years ago would be helpful. I'm having difficulty finding pre-Victorian information. [more inside]

Options when you don't get accepted to your first choice graduate school?

Graduate school acceptance. Or really, not. I need some advice from all of you over-educated metafilterites. What do you do when you don't get accepted to your first choice graduate school? Besides, obviously, not attend. Have any of you had any luck with reapplying, and if so, what did you change on your application to "do the trick?" Anyone have luck with taking classes as a non-matriculated student just to get your foot in the door? Any advice is much appreciated.
