How do I amass a book collection in this day and age?

I've always wanted to wind up with a large collection of books like my parents have. However, when I can find constantly updated information on the internet and I check out fiction from the library, I can rarely convince myself there's a good reason to actually BUY a book. What books should I be buying? Some snowflakes inside. [more inside]

Looking for meticulously curated archives to browse through

I'm looking for archives of... things to look at and meander through. Things like those that I have seen of medieval manuscripts, engravings of pictures of businesses featured on receipts from the 1800s (? not sure of dates), and I guess other things of that ilk. [more inside]

How I made my first million?

About 10 years ago I inherited my grandmas small fortune of paper and coin currency she amassed during the 70's and 80's while visiting nearly 100 world countries. The shoebox-collection contains maybe 200 coins and 100 paper notes, and some of them are really quite impressive! I've been lugging this box around for years and the time has come to finally part with it (sorry grandma). I'm not a coin collector and really don't know much about any of it, but with the help of a few books I researched a handful of coins and notes only to find out they're not worth diddly (<$1, if that). I have a feeling most of the collection is like this except for a few gold Rand coins and some notes that were previously appraised. Hivemind: what are some ways to liquidate my collection?

Collector wonders if collection is junk

In the past 6 months or so I read an interesting essay by a self-described collector. I believe he collected videogames and videogame toys/posters/etc, and I believe he had a picture in the post of some of his collection. I think it was on a blog or a gaming website. He was coming to the conclusion, or at least wondering if, his collection really was just "so much plastic junk" (and I think he used a phrase very similar to that). It was pretty short, maybe a printed page or two. Do you remember it or can you help me find it?

Best Books On Museum Life?

Looking for recommendations for the best non-fiction books on the subject of running a large museum/art archive. From any POV, from the fund-raising presidents to the ticket takers, guards, and art history interns in the basements. I'm looking for more large, prestige institutions ("What is it like to work at the Met" for example) but smaller collections or niche museums are also good.

Can you collect meteorite dust in your backyard? How?

CD storage suggestions that have individual CD "slots"

One of my 17 year old Laserline CD towers broke. The one that broke held 400 CDs and my total collection is somewhere in the 800 range. I need one or more storage towers/racks to hold at least 400, and possibly all of them at some point. Besides being able to store a lot of CDs, the other feature it needs to have is "slots". Most current storage options for large quantities of CDs, are basically empty shelves for you to fill. My CDs are in a particular oder, so if one is out, I want to be able to see the missing CDs at a glance. Any suggestions?

Vexed Ex Libris

Help me prune my book collection! I have over a thousand books and really need to slim it down. I'd like to reduce the book count by at least one hundred but can't seem to do it. Many have sat unread for years. In the past, I've said to myself that I'll read them 'someday' as an excuse for keeping them around. I'm fooling myself. What process, criteria or rule of thumb should I use to help me prune my library, overcome the (admittedly) irrational tome attachment, and make my collection a plum size once more.
