Chemistry filter: Decaf edition

Deathwish Coffee Flavor without the Caffeine

After years of close but not right and almost-good-enough-coffee-beans, I've discovered my holy grail of flavor, Deathwish coffee. Slightly cherrylike, a little chocolatey and OH SO MILD yet with a bit of a bite. Problem? I don't love the supercharged caffeine level. [more inside]

Really just a cream and sugar delivery device

I would like to drink decaf coffee. I have a nursling and it seems that my regular brand of decaf (Costco brand) still contains enough caffeine that it disrupts his sleep. Are there any brands of decaf that are known to contain a lesser amount of caffeine that the average brand? [more inside]

Espresso vs Coffee - Why does my stomach handle Espresso and not Coffee?

Happy Friday MeFi, I was wondering if someone could shine some light onto why my stomach freaks out when I have regular coffee (Dunks, Starbucks, Keurig) but doesn't scream when I have Espresso? I can't quite wrap my heard around it, although I suspect it may have something to do with acidic content from instant-coffee, but whenever I try to have coffee from Dunkin Donuts or from one of those little Keurig cups, my stomach feels like it is being stabbed to death. It usually follows with a very painful stomach-ache for the next 30-45 minutes and then it goes away. However, if I use my work's espresso machine, it doesn't hurt my stomach at all. What gives? This is probably not related, but I have similar issues when I drink beer but no issues when I drink Vodka or Tequilla. Thanks for all your responses.

Coffee, Tea, or...

As a life-long heavy coffee drinker rivaling the Gilmore girls, about two months ago I switched to tea. I still start each day with a delicious strong cup of coffee, then switch to tea for the rest of the day. But a weird thing happened: I don't feel energized after the coffee, and it's not until my first cup of tea (whether green or black) that I feel awake. Is it the different ways caffeine act in coffee as opposed to tea? Is it psychological? What could explain this? [more inside]

Start them young

My nearly 10 year old son is very interested in how coffee is made - he compares the difference between our presso and the french press; he loves watching the whole espresso machine at the coffee shop thing. He is also a kid that likes to 'go out for coffee' with me, but with a chocolate drink for him. How early can a kid safely start drinking coffee? [more inside]

Why am I suddenly more sensitive to caffeine?

I have noticed over the last week that my sensitivity to caffeine seems to have dramatically increased. Normally, drinking coffee would have no major effects except making me slightly more awake / alert you would expect. But over the last fortnight, it seems that even drinking even a single cup of coffee has become quite unpleasant. 45 minutes later i will feel dramatically over-energised and find concentration difficult and drinking a cup of coffee after dinner at 7.30 will leave me unable to get to sleep until 1:30 or 2am. Is this a health issue? Is it likely that my body will adapt back over time (I do like the taste of coffee and would like to keep drinking it if possible) or should I switch to decaf coffee or a lower caffeinated drink like tea? Why does caffeine give me a paradoxical effect?

For the past year, caffeine has had a strange effect on me. I drink soda or coffee -- and within minutes, I feel groggy, fuzzy headed, and almost kind of drunk. I get absolutely no stimulating effects. The more I drink, the more fuzzy-drunk I feel. Caffeine used to make me feel wonderful -- awake, cheerful, on-point. I've never drank an excessive amount (2 coffees a day, max). Can anyone explain what might be going on in my brain chemicals?

Learning How to Like Coffee, and How to Like Beer

There are two beverages that nearly every American adult seems to like, but I dislike both: coffee and beer. I would like to develop a taste for both of them. For morning caffeine, coffee's free at most workplaces whereas pop isn't; and beer is a cheap mood alterer; but more importantly, both are social lubricants, one that isn't achieved by drinking a soda while others get either awake, buzzed or drunk. It's been a while since I had either, but remembering the tastes, I think it's that I dislike the bitterness in each drink. [more inside]
