How do I get PHP to send an e-mail. Is there a way to do it without recompiling PHP/Apache. If not, how do I recompile PHP/Apache on a linux system to do this?

Looking for a free development environment package for creating simple games that run from the browser through widely used plug-ins. Basically I need something like Visual Basic that compiles a Java Applet or Flash game or ActiveX.
I am pretty good with coding simple games in Visual Basic and C but I don't have much time to get into the nitty-gritty of it with the interface.

Why do I always take the long route when programming? I'm no master programmer - but - I feel like I'm missing something. I'm constantly finding myself trying to tear down one wall or another, in attempt to resolve some issue, only to find halfway into it, that there was a ten minute fix right in front of me. Complications fade away, problem solved.

On the Mac, if I need to munge text in extremis, I prefer to use BBEdit. Recently, on the PC, I am finding myself in need of a text editor which is similar to BBEdit. I will use it both for coding and for text-cleaning. I prefer freeware and shareware but that's by no means the deciding factor. Which programs should I check out? Which should I avoid?

I want to make my website more modular and easier to update. I have no CMS ability, and no interest in frames What I want is to have something like "index.html" look into some other text or HTML file and load up and display the information (Text, HTML, CSS divs, Links).
As an example I want to have one central text file that saves the banner and navigation buttons of the site so that I only have to update that one file to make site-wide changes.
To me this is somewhat like frames (but not passe) and like an array (I use one Java array to display images) but I want to display code etc. I haven't been able to tinker with it and make it work, and, though I'm asking for it, it doesn't seem to be on google. Anyone?

I'd like to build (or have built for me) a comparison engine like
FetchBook or
BookkooB. Basically, a comparison engine that compares prices of books, and then if the user clicks over to buy the book from one of the affiliates, the program would append my account code, getting me a kickback on the referral.
I have no idea how to do this, or what it would cost to pay someone to do it. What would be the best way to figure this out? Are there any open source comparison engine scripts? If I had to pay someone to build something like this, what should I expect to pay? (I can do all the frontend work, just not the backend.)

rent-a-geek: Is there a site/service out there where I can hire someone to do some micro-jobs for me related to running a server? Something like Google Answers but instead of paying someone $10 to find out the history of hemophilia in New Zealand, I would pay someone $10 to fix my WebDav installation, or get mysql working, or some task that would take a Smart Person about 10 minutes of poking around. It's not that I can't figure this stuff out
eventually but I am short on time. Such a site would have to have some sort of reputation management, I suppose.

I'm trying to code a list of links to all open in the same new browser window. Since every link in the document should open in the same window, I'm using the {base} tag, for the sake of simplicity and size, but I've also tried adding "target='random_name'" to every single link on the page. Nothing's working. All the links are opening in new windows. Help?

I'm well and truly sick of hand-coding my website, and so it's about time I got myself some sort of blogging application. Because I'm a contrary type, though, I'd quite like to have a go at building it myself. What do you think - is there any point at all in my trying this? If there is, should I do it using PHP to edit an RSS file? And what features would you include if you were starting from scratch?
