Starting mid-August I am riding my bike from Portland to SF via the coast. I'd love any mefite insights to this trip. I have The Book. I have my gear. I plan on mostly camping. Aiming for 50-60 miles/day. I also have questions. [more inside]
Hi all! We are driving from PDX to Southwest OR in early August. We'll have time for one or maybe two good stops, and since it's my first time in OR, I would love to learn about good spots to include on our coastal drive. [more inside]

What would you see in California if you were starting out in LA and had a car and 7 days to travel, only caveat being that you need to be in San Diego on the morning of the 8th day? We're going to LA for a family wedding in August. Taking an extra week afterwards to travel around and see as much of California as possible. However, we have to prioritize as we only have 7 days. Flying out from San Diego on the 8th day. We will have a rental car and we're interested in seeing as much as possible, as it will be my first time in California. Driving a lot is not a problem; we love roadtrips, and both of us drive so we can take turns. Please help us plan an itinerary! [more inside]
I'm taking my first trip to the Pacific Northwest! Most of the itineraries I've seen are for a 9-10 day trip, but we only have 8 days, counting departure day. Trying to make the most of our time without cramming in too much. What are your must-sees for 8 days? We are likely sticking to Oregon & Washington, and want to see a mix of cities and coastline. We're planning a last-minute road trip down to the northern California coast for Spring Break (next week), leaving from Portland this weekend. Looking for cool stuff to do with 2 active girls, ages 3 and 7. [more inside]
Traveling along the Côte d'Azur and the Ligurian Sea in the next few weeks. Need to optimize our travel between the towns on our itinerary but searching is giving me incomplete information. Can you walk me through it, step by step? [more inside]
Daughter was born very prematurely nearly 4 yrs ago. As a result, her lungs are not as big/strong as they should be. We live in Minneapolis, and are therefore indoors for much of the winter. We would like to move somewhere we can be outside comfortably year-round: *more desired criteria below* [more inside]
There's a particular scent I associate with the coastal SF Bay Area, in particular the Point Reyes area, though I've smelled it as far south as Big Sur. Because of that, I associate it with redwoods, but I'm pretty sure it's not just the redwoods I'm smelling. It's a little floral but also slightly sharp and astringent--oddly, as lovely as it smells, it reminds me a bit of the Clairol hair dye I used as a teenager. What is it?
Your tips for a road trip from Toronto the East Coast of Canada, please! [more inside]
A friend and I are cycling the California coast, going south from Crescent City to LA starting today. Based on the amount of time we have, we will need to bus a few sections, maybe 200-250 miles or so. Cyclists who have done this route - which sections are missable? Which ones should we NOT miss? What bus/train options do you recommend? [more inside]
My husband of 28 years suddenly and unexpectedly passed away from a massive heart attack at the age of 47. Now, almost 9 years later, I find myself alone and realizing that I will not be able to continue living in Southern California for much longer. Both of my sons and my grandchildren live in this area, so my move means that I will be leaving the only family I have. I'll be honest: I am absolutely terrified. [more inside]
Does the Coast Guard get respect from Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines? Or do Navy guys say it's for people too chicken to join the Navy? I don't know what the Marines or Air Force might say. Something equally contemptuous. Can a Coast Guard veteran call himself or herself a 'veteran' in the way that we think of Veteran's Day and sacrifice and national pride. [more inside]
I know next to nothing about the Northeastern US coast, other than it's pretty and I'd like to see it. Please help me plan a relaxing vacation to a place I know nothing about! [more inside]

What are some of your favorite things to do in Port Aransas, TX? Some friends and I have a house-share over 4th of July weekend and we were wondering what all there is to do there, good places to eat, stuff to see. Most of us have never been there (imagine that, most of us being Texans). We will all be traveling from Austin. Thanks in advance for your recommendations.
We are looking for a way to get out of the cold for at least two months during the northeast winter and have been trying to figure out if its possible to rent a small ( one bedroom) place in the coast of Florida. But not near the hustle and bustle of Miami or Boca. We are looking for a laid back sleepy and affordable spot to be and stay warm during Feb/March, any ideas?
My 40th birthday present to myself is to run away for several days by myself to indulge in restful solitude, nature walks, spa treatments and room service. I live in Oregon and am considering the coast, but could also be talked into Washington/California, or places other than the beach. Price is no object, but would prefer it to be within driving distance of Portland. Requirements and preferences within... [more inside]
Five of us from San Francisco and Los Angeles like to meet in the middle along the coast once a year and car-camp for a long weekend. The past few years we've had a blast at Limekiln State Park campground, but it's under new management now and they won't allow us to reserve a specific ('our') campsite. In case we can't get one of the spots we want there, we'd like some backups to make reservations with somewhere between the southern end of Monterey Bay and San Luis Obispo—any suggestions? Hang on, let me tell you what we liked about Limekiln. [more inside]
Maybe you know this art print? Years ago I lost a piece of art that I loved but didn't know anything about. It was a sketch of a dry-docked small (single-person? in the perspective it looked to be about a 12-foot craft) sailboat, sail down, in a field of waving shore grass, looking out towards the sea and the back of the boat. The surf was far away, maybe 100 yards or so, and the boat was positioned in the lower right-hand quadrant of the piece though not in the corner. The original medium was was pencil or charcoal on paper. When I see it I think "New England coast" and "loneliness". It was a yellowish-greenish-sepia tone, or perhaps that was just the paper it was litho'd on. I recall it was an official print numbered in pencil on the matting and framed in a low-profile chrome frame. Do you know the work? Can you speculate on the name of the artist? I'd really like to be able to attempt to get another copy. [more inside]

Say you're on a cruise ship in the middle of the Atlantic and something happens and it capsizes. How long would you have to be out there until the Coast Guard rescues you? Hours? Days? How fast can those big helicopters get to you? I am talking middle of the ocean here. Thanks.
I plan to spend 2 weeks in the west coast to one day move there. I am hoping to travel to various cities and explore video game related places. I want to network and talk to people from all video game walks of life, from indie developers to touring game studios. What places should I visit? What studios does tours? I was planning to tour around late June, but should I center it around PAX Prime?

Going to Gulf Shores, Alabama, the week after Labor Day weekend. We'll have a car. The beach is fun, but we are both fair-skinned sun wimps and will need interesting hikes/historical things to amuse us when it's time for shade. What should we see and do? What should we skip? We are in our 30's, amenable to visiting and enjoying a few signature Redneck Riviera highlights but mostly want to spend time together and get reacquainted.
36 hours in Maine this weekend with a rental car. I am thinking of not getting a hotel room and instead car-camping. I'll be in Camden Maine for a wedding Friday and Saturday and plan to return to Boston late on Saturday to take a bus to DC. I want to spend as much of Friday wandering around Portland before driving to Camden and kind of want to spend the morning in Portland on Saturday, too. Is this a good idea? Any tips on quiet places to park and snooze?
