So I've got a bag of "natural hardwood lump charcoal" that I use for grilling. Do you think it would be a bad idea to use a little hunk of this stuff? I'm pretty sure it would get the job done... It can't be much different from the manufactured coals I've been buying from some weird factory, right?
ps. I'm smoking shisha out of it so no "are you chuffin the chumbus" comments, k? ;)

In many old houses once you break through the lath-and-plaster (or it breaks on you and you need to repair it) there is a disgusting amount of "coal dust" that comes out. Where do these carbon particles come from?
Yes old houses used to be heated with coal. But I assume the furnaces had chimneys to vent the combustion products. So why is there so much dust within walls and ceilings?

Are there any environmentally friendly ways to use coal as an energy source? Bonus points if these methods are economically plausible. If none exist currently, is there any interesting research being done?
