Need recommendations a custom (?) online video/image portal

I work for an advertising company that sells very high profile ad locations. One of the ways we demonstrate value to our advertisers is collecting and showing them examples of their ads appearing incidentally in TV, film, newspapers, etc. I would like to create an online portal for displaying a rolling chronological archive of these video clips and still images. Which CMS for building a social networking website?

I've been brought onboard by a startup company to fix up their social networking website, which was built for them in Joomla and is a complete glitch-filled mess, both front and back end. After upgrading to the latest Joomla version, the site has more or less broken (does not function at all at the front end). Should I attempt to patch up and rebuild this mess in Joomla, or start over with a better choice of CMS? [more inside]

However, I'm having trouble finding just the right image gallery behaviour. [more inside]

Always scribble, scribble, scribble -- now how to display?

I've been keeping research notebooks since the early 1990s, on a lot of different subjects. They're all finally consolidated as a couple thousand text files written in Markdown syntax. I've got a few other questions about the best one, and best way, though: [more inside]

Help me choose a Wordpress theme, please!

I need a theme for a new Wordpress site I'm making about hot springs in Japan. I have a large Bento database of over 200 location with reviews, pictures, addresses, types of baths, and so on... I've found a way to automatically turn the CSV file that Bento makes into the pages I want... I just need a template to put those pages into. Something simple and more geared to hosting static pages rather than a blog. I've spent hours searching through all of these theme websites only to get confused in the 1,000s of choices. So I'm asking you, the MiFi community, to choose for me. Thanks! [more inside]

Web development work in Sydney: where to go ... what to know?

Web development work in Sydney: where to go ... what to know? I'm a web developer, and might be getting laid off from my corporate job in Sydney next year. So, two questions really:
  • What's the best way to find work? Which agencies are the best? Which websites?
  • I have a bit of lead-time, and I should probably be thinking about brushing up on my skills: I've spent a lot of time working on idiosyncratic in-house CMS and maintenance tools which would make you splutter if you saw them. So ... Drupal? JSP? Front-end stuff like JQuery/AJAX? What are the technologies in demand?
