Boyfriend has a solid-colored teal silk necktie he was forced to buy for a wedding. He says he'll never wear it again in it's current state as it is too "prom-y". Anything I can do to either a) make the tie more interesting (ex. a pattern) and thus wearable or b) put it to some other crafty use? [more inside]
Mefi Sewers! I am a beginning sewer and just found a fabulous vintage patterned length of fabric (two yards x 58 inches) at a thrift shop for two bucks. I want to make a very simple a-line shift dress that is made from two cuts of fabric, front and back, that sew together on the sides of the body. A zipper in the back is ok. I cannot seem to find a pattern, vintage or otherwise, that fulfills these criteria. [more inside]

Is there anything comparable in quality to, but cheaper than, Brooks Brothers shirts? I usually buy the no-iron, slim-fit BB shirts, but I'm trying not to drop too much cash, as I need to replace all my shirts (WTF deodorant stains?!). I don't like the ginormous blousey shirts that typically pass for men's dress shirts, so recommendations for something along the lines of BB's slim-line shirts, qualitatively comparable but cheap enough that I'd switch brands would be appreciated.
I'm trying to plan a trip to Fairbanks, Alaska next March in the hopes of seeing the northern lights. I'd be happy for any tips you might have in general for trips to alaska/northern lights viewing. However, my first concern (as I do more research) is clothing - I'm in Georgia, and doubt I have anything that is suitable for March in Fairbanks. (-20 to 50 degrees?) [more inside]

Hi Sewers! I'm just learning how to sew thanks to a new sewing machine and a community college class this summer, but I'd like to develop a specific expertise in alterations and tailoring due to my love of thrifting. There are lots of sewing books out there- is there one that has an especially good chapter on tailoring and altering? [more inside]
I've ruined two of my favourite shirts and am desperate for replacements from Uniqlo. Sadly, they won't ship outside of UK and I can't go right now. Can you recommend (or do you know of) a reliable UK service that I could use to forward my package to Finland? I've previously used Shipito with US-only vendors and was hoping for something similar.

I'm in my 20s and a man and I have a lot of trouble coming up with reasonably in style outfits. I'm looking for pictures of outfits with links to buy each component. Ideally, these would not be tied to any one brand (so, not Gap's looks for spring or something). Basically: "Wear theses things together and here is where you can find them." [more inside]

Lost a ton of weight, clothes don't fit anymore. Should I learn to do my own alterations or buy new clothes?
I've lost a lot of weight in the past year and have gone from a size 14 to a size 8. After a few years of thinking it was just a metabolism/getting older thing, my doctor recently discovered my weight gain was caused by the beginning stages of hypothyroidism. (I ballooned 47 lbs. in a year and half.) After I started taking medication (and increasing my workouts,) the weight started dropping off. I was a size 4 before all the gain, so it's possible I might lose more. I have a lot of nice clothes that don't fit me anymore. Some pieces are really nice designer items and I'd like to keep them and protect my investment in them. Alterations are expensive, and buying new clothes isn't cheap, either. Is it worth it to learn how to sew and do my own alterations? Before I invest in a sewing machine and some classes, I want to know if this plan is doable. I know nothing about sewing, so is taking in clothes something that's complex and should be left to the professionals?
Do you know of a cultural group that fits this phenotype? [more inside]
I am a male in my 20's, and I get the same things done every time (shirt sides taken in, coat sleeves taken up, or pant legs hemmed up). Does anyone know of an affordable, quality tailor in Richmond? Every time I call asking for an estimate, they tell me to bring my clothes in to get an estimate. I would waste time and money driving all over town!

I would like to buy a men's jacket like the one Stockhausen is wearing in this video. I'm not sure what the style is called. Any ideas on search terms and/or links to specific jackets for sale? The color is not particularly important -- it's all about the style.
I need ideas for my business casual wardrobe. I don't need theory. I would like pictures of guys in cool business casual attire like this and this that I can get ideas from. I would also like links to sites that sell nice business casual clothes online. Help me look snazzy on my first day of work!
Please help me find stylish, attractive clothes that fit well for a tween girl who is somewhat overweight and not particularly tall-especially jeans, other kinds of pants, bathing suits, and other such items where expected weight/height ratio really matters and can't be fudged in the way that dresses and skirts can. They should be relatively reasonably priced, but I'm willing to splurge if that's the only way this is fixable. [more inside]
I am currently studying a dance-based course at uni, which requires a day-to-day wardrobe of stretchy, comfortable clothes (leotards, singlets, leggings etc.). Easy enough. But I need warm things to chuck on over the top of my dance gear in between classes and I'm sick of trackies and hoodies. Help me find some inspiration. [more inside]

What-to-wear-with-it-Filter: Navy blue trousers. I (mid-20s male with an obvious tendency towards beanplating) just decided to shift work wardrobe into a higher gear (business casual!), and bought two fantastic pairs of washed cotton chinos. One pair is navy blue. Never worn navy blue before. Help me pair it with my existing wardrobe without looking like an off-duty sailor or Connecticotian on vacation (sorry, Connecticotians). Where can I donate used clothing, books, etc, where they will actually be used and NOT resold? It is really morally important to me that it be actually used, not sold, where the money is then used in ways I can't control. I work in the nonprofit industry, and know only too well how general donations of money get used. But most people asking for clothing donations for poor or abused people, are only asking for them so they can resell them, not so that actual poor, homeless, or abused people will wear them or read them. Where can I find a place that will take all my donations and ensure that they are used or given to real people?
Looking for fitted shirts similar to INC from Macy's, which is the only brand I've found shirts from that I've really liked. I work in a semi-casual workplace (no jeans/shorts, but untucked button-up shirts are fine), and I like shirts that I'll also wear on my days off. I'm pretty thin, so I need shirts that don't balloon out at the waist, and I tend to like relatively simple designs (plain colors/stripes, with a preference for monochrome). Preferably, the shirts would hold up well without ironing, since I only have a hand-steamer. What brands other than INC should I check out? (I'm in Southern California, so please stick to brands that would be available for trying on around here.)

I have no idea who made my favorite workout pants or where I bought them. Can you help me find another pair like them? They have an elastic waist AND ankles like most men's sweatpants. BUT, they're made from a much lighter cotton material that's not fleecy. They're also loose fitting but not too much.
