Help me sort of rough it, car camping style

My boyfriend is a bike mechanic and he's going to be providing support for a large mountain bike stage race taking place over six days. He asked me to come, which sounds like a fun active vacation thing to do. It will be him and his business partner in a company truck, and me in a second car. There will be hot sweaty days of work, chilly nights and a mix of car camping and possibly a hotel here and there. I'd like advice on clothing and what else I should bring, for comfort and utility. Tunics & Kurtis, shipped from inside the US?

I'm a bit obsessed with women's tunics at the moment. Especially ones that have a semi-Indian look. Metafilter is so great at finding amazing clothing resources and I wondered if anyone has a good source for tunics or kurtis shipped from inside the United States? (I'm concerned about customs or courier fees for items shipped from other countries.) Thanks for any leads!

Winter, we're coming

My wife has accepted a post-doc position in the University of Wisconsin system with duration of around two years. Where exactly in Wisconsin is slightly up in the air, but no matter where we end up, we have a host of questions to ask about moving there and Wisconsin life in general. Once we know where we're actually going, we may have more questions about the area, but right now I think our biggest concern is winter. [more inside]

Fancy wool-blend formalwear: dry-clean after every wearing?

I recently acquired a beautiful, brand new designer dress that's much nicer than anything I've had in my wardrobe before. I've worn it once and have been hanging it up to air out. Is it better to get it dry cleaned before storing it, or will it be easier on the fabric to put it away in its worn-once state? I don't want to put unnecessary stress on the fabric from the dry cleaning process, but I really, really don't want to find moth holes in the dress several months from now, either. [more inside]

Looking for Commercial clothing/Fashion Websites That Have Specific Info

I have seen fashion/clothing sites where on the product page the brand has dress/pant/shirt etc. options. There is a blank image of the pants, etc. Below the image is a choice of colors or design. When you scroll over a color you then see what the color will look like on the pants. Does anyone know any brands that have this on there sites? I have seen them in the past yet none of them are coming to mind. I am building a website right now and would like to show this to my designer.

Bathing Suit Needed, Difficulty Level : I'm Not a Baby And It's Not 1983

My sister recently unearthed this photo of Wee Baby JulThumbscrew experiencing the Atlantic Ocean for the first time. I developed an immediate, nigh-unto incapacitating desire for an adult-sized version of the swimsuit I was wearing in the photo. Does a grown-up version of this thing exist? WHERE?! If not, is anyone making decent custom swimwear these days (perhaps on Etsy)? Thanks, Hive!

How to wear a shawl fashionably

I am knitting a lot and I love the look of so many of the shawl patterns available. Different shapes, different sizes, solid ones, lace ones, etc. I want to make some, but I worry that wearing them is going to make me look frumpy or geriactric. I know it can be done but... how? [more inside]

Clothing, maybe a bit of Class, a little unique, smaller price tag?

So, for the longest time, I have coveted some of the vests sold by San Fransisco alt clothing store Five and Diamond such as this. I like getting occasionally dressed up and I tend to favor stark contrasts of a white collard shirt with something else (a vest a tie etc.) when I do. I am looking for something like that but, as in the linked vest, with a little extra pizazz That being said, I don't get dressed up often enough these days (nor do I necessarily make enough money) to rationalize dropping that much money on a single item. Anyone have cheaper ideas of where to find similar items?

Looking for graphic t-shirts that aren't terrible

I've decided that I want to get a few graphic t-shirts for the summer. I've found a few designs on Spreadshirt that I like, but I've never used the service before, and I'm sort of nervous about their general quality. Overall I'm wondering if anyone has experience buying from them. If not, then do you have experience buying from other store-fronts that sell custom printed shirts from a broad range of artists? I'm looking for a wide range of designers, and as few clever puns or of-the-moment pop culture references as possible. I'm interested in abstract designs more than stuff that's text or brand heavy. Ideally this would be about 20 dollars per shirt.

Need an Easter dress, plus size, short notice.

My grandparents are very elderly and chances are very good this will be at least one's last Easter. I hate dressing up, in dresses especially, but doing so always makes them absolutely delighted. So, I spent a lot of time taking measurements and stuff to order something well ahead of time from an online retailer who has been making excuses for weeks and finally said they'd refund my money because they can't get my order to me after all. Well... okay, clothes aren't my forte at the best of times, I need emergency fashion assistance. [more inside]

Where to buy a stylish but affordable trenchcoat in Vancouver BC

I'm going to be up in Vancouver this weekend and want to shop for a new spring coat. Something trenchcoat style but not in black or beige - cool colors or prints/patterns would be better. Size 12 or M/L, between $100 and $200. The style constraints are that it should not be teenagery but not dowdy either - I like classic cuts but trendy colors and patterns. I already plan to check out The Bay.

What not to wear to the interview

I'm a lady. I have a job interview coming up for which I was advised to wear a suit. I can't find my real suit, (may have donated it) but I doubt if it fit me anymore anyway. What I do have is a black sheath dress, a nice navy blue blazer, a nice grey blazer, a nice grey pencil skirt that is a slight mismatch with the grey blazer, and a pair of pants that's also a slight mismatch with the grey blazer, and a selection of those nice decorative shells that women wear under suits. I think I have black pumps somewhere, and I also have some nice looking oxford heels. Can I make something work with what I have or should I go try to find a suit? In addition, opaque or sheer tights? This is for a non-management web design job for which I thought suits were passe.

Clothes shopping filter: How do I separate the wheat from the chaff?

I'll admit it, I buy a lot of clothes off the sale rack or at outlet stores. Too often, though, I bring home what I think is a great value only to discover, after wearing and/or washing said item, quality problems I didn't see in the store. Things like knits that are twisted and don't lie flat, shirt hems that are hopelessly contorted once they've been laundered, or buttonholes that quickly ravel beyond repair. I know these sorts of problems are inevitable given the state of clothing manufacture, but that doesn't mean I have to buy these "troubled" items. So, savvy shoppers of MeFi, what should I be looking for? What tells you to steer clear of a garment no matter how much you like it? Is there a secret code on the hang tag that everyone but me knows about? C'mon, please share your secrets.

Need Suggestions of Good Bodied, Sexy Male Actors, Rockstars, Etc.

I am developing a line of men's casual wear and we are brainstorming for handsome, well bodies actors and celebrities age 35 + to imagine wearing our pants. Because of the style and look of the pants we have to make the website hyper-masculine (ala Bruce Weber) My template is Daniel Craig. (My goal is to actually get these pants into a Bond film) The actors/performer/sportsmen do not have to "good guys" but they do have to be sexy and masculine. Some examples include Aaron Eckart, Matthew Mcconaughey, Woody Harrelson, Michael Phelps, etc

Fashion blogs that aren't about stereotypes

I'm looking for some fashion blogs for people that don't want to dress as "stereotypical man" or "stereotypical woman". Most of the genderqueer-umbrella-style blogs that I've seen have (presumably) male-bodied individuals wearing clothes that are stereotypically worn by female-bodied individuals, or vice versa. I'm looking for blogs where clothes that could be worn by anyone without other people batting an eye, are showcased. Genderqueer/non-cis clothing, if you will.

A T-shirt that will make me Mr. Universe

MeFi, I want to flex my muscles! More specifically, I want a T-shirt that looks like a muscular male chest. Cartoon abs would be ideal but photorealistic abs will be okay too. I would like the shirt to be in color, have the printed abs be wide enough to cover my chest so it looks like I have a six pack rather than looking like a picture of abs, and be available in a men's/unisex small. Under $20 including shipping would be ideal too. This is the closest I can find to what I need but is too large, too expensive and I'd honestly prefer cartoony abs. Halp?

I have pretty much nothing in my closet that I like to wear, and that I feel I look good in. What's Destroying My Pants?

I keep having the same wear and tear on my suit pants (and to a lesser extent, jeans and khakis) and I want to know what is causing it and how to make it stop. In almost every pair the crotch begins to go quickly, tearing apart, piling, fraying, and being worn straight through with little holes. it's like I'm doing splits or high kicks all day. These occur across types of pants, tailored and not, stuff I swear frequently and stuff I hardly ever wear. As far as I know I'm buying the right size and try to wear them at my natural waist, just below the belly button and frequently with belts. I'm a guy with a bit of a gut and I don't go for marathon runs in my suit pants. For outfits I wear a lot I rotate the pants but within a year they're ruined and torn up. Is it the material? Am I sitting wrong? Hanging them wrong? Is there something I should be looking or/asking the tailor about? [more inside]
