I'm looking for 100% cotton summer nightgowns for Go Banana jr., which is proving to be much more difficult than expected as everything appears to be polyester (so they don't burst into flame, apparently). I found exactly what I want through Boden, but alas they are entirely sold out in her size. Where can I buy these? It would be ideal to buy them in person in the Toronto area, but on-line is also fine. I'm looking for size 7-8.
I'm learning to accessorize! I'd like to find some little mathematics-related accessories, kind of like the women's equivalent to a (relatively subtle) mathematics tie or cufflinks, that are work (think secondary school educator) appropriate. Simple and relatively understated is preferred. I'm also interested in clothing that would be work-place appropriate (not t-shirts!). I had a lot of fun with my regex skirt from XKCD a few years ago. Can you recommend a men's rain jacket that is available in tall sizes, lightweight, and doesn't look overly sporty or technical? [more inside]
OK, so I need to dress better -- up my act, look a bit classier or cuter or generally not like a boy in college. Part eleventy billion. [more inside]
I line dry, I want to make my own fabric softener. [more inside]
I am a lady with a small waist and a generous booty. I look best in "high-rise" or "high-waisted" pants because, well, my waist is pretty high, which means that the popular "low-rise" and "mid-rise" trousers leave acres of billowing flesh exposed between my actual waist and the waist of the pants. What brands or specific jeans or pants (or skirts) can I wear? I've had decent luck with Simply Vera for Kohl's skinny jeans with stretch. Any other suggestion from like-waisted ladies? [more inside]
I'm looking for traditional brands that are associated with quality products, like Pendleton wool blankets. [more inside]
So I'm sure this doesn't really exist, but in case it does and I've missed it, is there anywhere I can find Anthropologie-esque clothing more in the neighborhood of Forever21 prices? I'm a size 4/6. It doesn't have to be quite as cheap as Forever21, but no $200 tops please! I'm quite gentle on clothing and I can sew basic repairs, so super well made isn't *terribly* important. If their clothing is good for tall women and/or uses natural fabrics, that's a super bonus! I already know about eshakti. Thanks metafilter!
My husband recently had a meeting with his boss. Boss suggested he would have a better time getting ahead in the company if he dressed for success. Husband was offended that his work would be over-looked based on the way he dresses. Unfortunately, I agree with his boss. How can I positively coax my husband in to dressing better without making him self conscious? [more inside]
I have a yoga fundraiser tomorrow at 5pm that I want something gay pride-ish for (like a t-shirt or yoga pants). I have a lot of gay friends that I could borrow a t-shirt from but I am traveling tomorrow so would be unable to meet up with anyone (and will be unable to shop tomorrow or get anything online by then). I have no rainbow stuff. I am in Center City Philadelphia. I will be checking Athleta, Lululemon, City Sports, Gap, etc for rainbow stuff, but I'd prefer something that expressly (like words) supports equality. All Google really tells me is gay-friendly stuff, gay reading (e.g. Giovanni's), etc. Does anyone know if any of those places would have slogan/pride t-shirts? Am I missing a HRC location or something else that would have something?
Short-sleeve T-shirt over a long-sleeve thermal (i.e. waffle-weave, i.e. "long johns") shirt. Feel free to answer with when and where you personally first saw someone wearing this combination... if you were alive back then, natch!
I am indeed starting a new thread. What are GOOD QUALITY online retailers for women's shirt? And pants, too, for bonus. (I've seen several custom-made jeans sites, but have no idea if they're any good.) [more inside]
What is a ladies alternative to my partners zip-up hoodie that I can put over everything, including dresses and skirts and cute outfits, and be presentable enough to run errands yet comfy and warm? [more inside]
I have a lot of sleeveless summer dresses, mostly casual. It gets chilly in the evenings, and some things are too bare for offices. I'd like some shrugs, wraps, cardigans, whatever. I've scoured the stores and a: they are absurdly difficult to find (at least when you're looking for them) and b: what I have found tends to look cheap and matronly when actually worn on a body. Where can I find flattering cover-ups? And what are the secrets (when shopping online) of figuring out what might actually work in the real world? There are all different sorts of cuts (just covering the boobs, tie at the waist, shrunken cardigan, different sleeve lengths). I'm short-waisted and busty, for what it's worth. I looked through links in previous threads but didn't see anything ... my current go-to is a lightweight cropped denim jacket, and I'm getting kind of sick of it. Thanks!
Living in the Alps and going to Iceland in a few weeks, I decided to invest in a decent pair of hiking boots for walking in the mountains, amongst rocks, rough terrain and even volcanoes and glaciers in the case of Iceland. I have not had such shoes for a long time, so am new to such a purchase. After trying the boots at home for a few hours, I am experiencing discomfort in my ankles. Is his normal or should I take the boots back? [more inside]
I currently live in the Southern US, but next month I'm making a trip to Southern Argentina and next year I'm moving to New York. I guess it's time to buy warm clothes! Can you give me some recommendations on warm, light, layerable winter clothes, particularly a coat? [more inside]
I live in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and have noticed that, over the past several months, a sizable number of clothing donation boxes have appeared on sidewalks and in little disused nooks of urban space. There are three on my block alone that have sprung up, seemingly overnight, within the last couple months. What's going on? [more inside]
I read this New York Times article about clothing that is ethically produced and looked up the company they feature, Everlane, and really loved the look of their stuff. It's conservative enough for an office, but still fashionable and hip, and not horribly expensive ($15 for women's t-shirts). The trouble is, they don't offer very much variety. Basically, I'm looking for more things along the lines of these previous MeFi questions but for women's clothes available for purchase in the U.S. [more inside]
I'm going to Pakistan! What do I wear? [more inside]
Everyone is wearing mint green as of spring. EVERYONE. How does this happen? [more inside]
So the days are getting longer and warmer, and I find myself in the need of some decent clothing, varying from casual to business casual. I'm on the heavier side and thus prefer darker, more muted tones, but am open to other options. I'm also not a fan of logos but will pay a premium for good quality and easy to care for clothing. An important consideration is that I REALLY prefer long-sleeve shirts and longer pants (i.e. I don't need more shorts), as I feel they make me feel more put together. They still need to be "breathable" though! [more inside]

I've recently discovered the difference that quality tailoring can make to the quality of my wardrobe. Now I'm looking for a great tailor in London who can alter my clothes at a price I can afford. Any recommendations? [more inside]

I'm curious what the most frequently purchased colors are for regular, non-jean pants for men. I was discussing this with a colleague today, and guessed black and navy. I'm looking specifically for industry numbers or anecdotal evidence from those working in clothing manufacturing or sales. (I already guessed!) Thanks in advance.
Following a house move, a friend and I decluttered 70-90% of my wardrobe. I now feel like I have no idea what sort of thing I need to be buying in the future, particularly as I have a hard to fit figure. Help! [more inside]

What website am I thinking of - make clothes selections, creates a fasion profile, and then makes suggestions? General advice on how to figure out what to wear... why does 30 feel so...weird? I feel like I'm either dressed like a 20 yr old or a 60 yr old - awkward, all the time. [more inside]

I'm interested in watching more documentaries or miniseries about the fashion/clothing industry. Three I've rented recently were Valentino:The Last Emperor, The September Issue, and Signé Chanel. I especially enjoyed the last two as they really showed a lot behind the scenes about how stuff is made (both the media and the couture dressmaking sides). [more inside]
My current wardrobe consists of jeans and a Gap V-neck T. I am at the point where I need to replace my t-shirts (they are wearing out). Do I stick to the Gap shirts or is there something better out there for a similar or lower price? Some options I've found are Uniqlo (but they always seem to be sold out) or Everlane. Also, any sizing suggestions would be great too! I currently wear a large Gap shirt, but with Everlane it looks like I'd need to go up to an XL (I figured this by comparing chest size from Gap to Everlane). Is that correct?
Can you recommend men's undershirts (preferably v-neck, possibly tank) as an alternative to cotton tees? [more inside]
I've noticed that the bog-standard off the rack/department store menswear items (button-up shirts, slacks, etc) from UK brands bought in the UK tends to fit me wildly better then their counterparts in the US. I have to alter them a lot less and they just hang off my body better. I'm wondering if there's a technical/fashion-nerd reason for this and if so, what should I be looking for in the US department store brands to get this same effect? [more inside]
I live in London. I am going to Toronto on Sunday where, according to the weather forecast, there will be lows of -16C. I have literally never *been* in weather like that before, and do not own, or know where I should purchase, clothing which will deal with it. Special circumstance to note: I am a large person. I'm a woman, but men's XXXL does well by me . [more inside]
Looking for offroad biking clothes that don't make me look like shrink-wrapped tripe or some kind of junior-high skater dude. What does the middle-aged country gentleman wear on a bicycle hack through the shrubbery? [more inside]
I bought a beautiful long sleeve men's shirt on Hautelook.com. It was all black with contrast saddle stitching. The site said the size was true, meaning I bought a medium because I wear a medium. Boy, were they wrong. It was way too small. So, unfortunately, I have to return it. I called them to see if they had a large but they don't keep stock on the things they sell. So, I'm trying to see if this shirt is sold any other place. But when I google/bing "Golden Star" nothing remotely close comes up. To be honest, I've never heard of that label. Does anyone know how I can find this shirt or, at least, the company that makes it?
I am trying to remember a website I vaguely remember. It was like lookbook.nu but everyone had their height/weight/body shape in their profile, so you could search for fashionable style posts/outfit of the days with people with a similar body type to you? [more inside]
This snowflake is woefully under-hoodied: I cannot locate a hoodie which meets my specific nitpicky criteria. Can YOU? [more inside]
My roommate bikes about 4 miles to work. His feet are size 13 and he uses platform (flat) pedals. He wears pretty chunky shoes. We live in Portland, OR. For HolidayGiftingTime I bought him some Sugoi Resistor booties, but within a month they have shredded and ripped to the point of uselessness. What are some other options for the large-footed, shreddy-pedaled biker? Are there any booties specifically for platform pedals? [more inside]
Cluelessly-dressed 30-year-old office-working lady here. Professional women/fashion mavens of Metafilter, could you lend me a hand with these business wear-related queries? [more inside]

Need recommendation for a tailor on or near the UWS of Manhattan, NYC . Standard stuff, mostly altering off the rack shirts, pants, and jackets, nothing too extreme but should be familiar with vintage and custom-mades. Would prefer quality over speed or cost.

I want to learn about the cultural significance of clothing, as well as how clothes are made, but I want my process to be fun. What do you think are the best popular Hollywood-style movies, in which the characters discuss what clothes mean to them? What about movies in which the characters are involved with the sewing or designing of clothing? Do garments play a major part in the plot of any movies? Any suggestions for movies that have helped you to think about clothes would be most appreciated.
I've been invited to interview with a few grad schools for biochemistry and biophysics doctoral programs. Hooray! What should I expect? How do I prepare? And what the heck do I wear? Complications: extremely poor and wardrobe consists of t-shirts and blue jeans with one proper "job interview" outfit. [more inside]
