Good Winter Clothes for Toddlers

Please recommend good winter clothing for 1-year-olds, especially super warm coats. We're talking months and months of ice and snow here. It's our first midwest winter and we'd love recommendations on coats and clothes to get our 1-year-old boys (well, they turn 1 in a couple of weeks). Online or stores in the Aurora, IL area. Thanks in advance!

Recommend some women's winter clothing, please!

What warm winter clothing do you recommend for a woman who likes nature photography and hiking? I love my nature photography hobby, but in the next few months that will mean going outside in some really cold temperatures and I hate being cold. So, I've decided to get some real winter clothing this year to make it a little more bearable.

I know I should layer, wear a hat and gloves, etc etc., but I'm looking for specifics here. I want brand recommendations and/or specific items you recommend. I want to know what keeps you warm!

Items I am looking to purchase: a winter coat, gloves, snow/hiking boots, general warm winter active clothing.

A few things to keep in mind:

1. Gloves - My hands suffer the most in cold weather. As a photographer, I can't wear super thick gloves because I need to be able to operate the camera. I'm open to layering gloves, but the first layer will need to be something both warm and relatively thin so I can still push the tiny buttons.

2. Clothing / Coat - I'm female, average height, but small. I generally try to buy petite tops because they fit best.

Help me outfit myself for my expedition to the Yukon. Well, not quite... but pretty close.

I'm about to go off to college- in Massachusetts, when I've lived in Texas my entire life. Ideally, I'd like not to freeze all winter, so I'm looking for your clothing/lifestyle advice geared to someone without a clue. Additionally, the only members of my family who've lived anywhere cold are male, while I've fairly recently embraced my dressing-like-a-girl options. Any advice about how women in Our Frozen Territories stay warm without giving up on looking nice is especially appreciated. I've seen this thread, and while helpful, I think I need some more concrete advice (links to specific products, please!). I know layers are good, hats/scarves/gloves are key, etc., but I could use some advice more tailored to my situation.

I'd like to do as much shopping as I reasonably can while at home. Cold weather clothing is scarce in Texas in July, but I currently live within 20 minutes of five malls, while my transportation and shopping options are waay limited in the tiny New England town I'm going to be in. What places carry the kind of stuff I need year-round?

And what kind of stuff do I need, anyway? I know I need a warm jacket, but I don't want to go down there with something huge and warm and find that it's overkill most of the school year. Adjustable options? A coat wardrobe? What do people have up there?

As for other clothes, I want to be warm, but I don't want to entirely sacrifice my newly found girl dressing abilities. I have a decent handle on what looks good on me down here, but tank tops and sundresses are not going to cut it up there. What do people wear in this context (college girl in cold region)? As a teenage girl, fitting in is a concern, as well as not looking like a dork among my new peers who've lived with snow their entire lives.

Another thing: shoes. After being a one pair of shoes kind of girl for years, I've discovered the joys of owning multiple pairs. Mostly, sadly, the cute kind that are not practical in the cold. I suspect I need some kind of waterproof boot sort of thing for snow, but what else? Are their boots appropriate for snow out there that don't look like ugly hiking boots?

I'm pretty much trying to create a new wardrobe for myself, here. Help me, please!

Help me stay on my bike as this winter without turing into Frostilicus!

Cold weather cycling gear that wont make me look like I am getting read to pilot an X-Wing? Inspired by the nice 40 degree and rainy days we are getting more and more of I thought I would ask this fair community if they could share their personal experiences with cold weather cycling clothing, more specifically a jacket that wont make me look like I am just back from space.

This isn't for long distance recreational cycling, as that largely gets shelved for the winter, and I have some bright blue spandex that handles most situations adequately. I am more specifically looking for a nice, not too expensive, WINDPROFF, strongly water resistant, nice flexibility, longer sleeves, and no hood that I wont be able to use anyways. I will be using this to get around town, so if its not some neon color that burns my eyes and is actually comfortable and warm that would be fantastic, bonus points for accessible pockets during cycling.

Also tacking on an additional question, would anyone have any particular recommendation for a pack I should invest in, or a good online store for some something bike friendly?

Cheap winter clothes?

Cheap winter clothes online/MSP area? So, I'm now going to school in Minnesota, and it has all of a sudden turned cold. I have very few winter clothes, and need to get some ASAP...

Is there anywhere recommended, either online (preferably) or in the St. Paul/Minneapolis, where I could get some cheap winter clothes? I prefer zip-ups!

You're as cold as ice...you're willing to sacrifice our looooove!

I'm moving to Latvia from Los Angeles/Orange County in a few weeks and I need recommendations for nice, professional, but not insanely expensive winter clothing. Size and style parameters inside. First off, I'm a 24-year-old guy, going to Riga to work teaching English at a private school and probably in some businesses around town.

Because I'm young for my field, I feel that (at least at work) I'll need to up the formality a bit and not look like a 16-year-old ready to hop on a ski lift, so I'm wary of bright orange Michelin-man ski jackets. But lots of what I've seen that isn't nine inches of thick down and Goretex doesn't look like it would be very effective against the cold, snowy/sleety/rainy, just generally horrible weather Riga gets in the winter (climate chart here).

I have so many questions here: for example, I really like this jacket from LL Bean, and it fits my budget, but how do I know if it'll be enough? What other accessories do I need? How do I keep my pants dry in the rain and snow, especially the cuffs? Do I wear big snow boots on the way to work and then change into work shoes when I get there, or are there, like, shoe...sole...cover...things that I can use to not slip and die on icy sidewalks?

And most importantly: what do I buy here in California (or online!) and what do I buy there? It seems like clothing is much cheaper in the States than it is in Europe, but winter clothes in LA (which I've only seen at places like sporting goods stores) seem to be limited to $400 snowboarding jackets and $100 technical microfiber sweaters, if I can find them at all.

Sizewise, I'm quite small: 5'7" (170 cm), 140lbs (63.5 kg), US shoe size 8.5/9. This means that lots of winter jackets that look fine on a model and hit their legs mid-thigh go further toward my knees and make me look even smaller; lots of clothing sized "small", especially outerwear like jackets, often has sleeves that are too long.

I already have a cashmere scarf, a beanie, some very futuristic-looking earmuffs called 180s, and a cotton jacket, all of which barely kept me alive during a trip to Chicago and Wisconsin in early March. I don't have any waterproof gear aside from an umbrella, and I don't have any waterproof/snow-appropriate shoes or socks, sweaters, other hats, gloves, or warm-weather underwear.

My everyday apparel for work wear in Los Angeles doing the same job would be a long-sleeved collared shirt, perhaps with a tie, non-jean pants (khakis or, uh, non-khakis), and non-athletic/sneaker shoes. Zara and H&M, as well as Banana Republic, stock my favorite things, but none of those stores have winter stuff in stock right now and I can't afford a huge new wardrobe either.

I've seen this question (clothes for a Floridian headed to Europe on a winter vacation), but many of the links are dead and since I'm moving there full time and working, I think my needs are a little different.

To review: winter outerwear and work clothes, a little more formal, flattering for a smaller guy, not too expensive (total budget for work/winter clothes less than $300-$400), available online or in Orange County and environs. Sorry if I rambled, but I'm a little freaked out about spending heaps of money and still ending up freezing cold!

Thank you!

I have accepted that if I wish to preserve my reproductive organs, I will need to acquire a long coat rather quickly. but what to look out for? I don't know if you noticed but it's really damn cold in chicago today and the wind makes this all the more brutal. I have accepted that if I wish to preserve my reproductive organs, I will need to acquire a long coat rather quickly. someome was nice enough to hand me a 20% off coupon for macy's but my dilemma is that -besides the obvious taste questions- I don't know what to look out for. I've spent the last six years in california! I've never collected intel on what makes a coat a good coat or not. I only heard I should look out for pure wool and nothing else in order to stay warm.

Kenneth Cole Reaction "Wyatt" Wool/Cashmere Overcoat With Spill Out Hood

any recommendations? is there anything obviously wrong with these choices I made from their website? what else do I need to be looking out for?

Destination: Get Down!

I just bought a black down coat and the down is constantly stuck to the outside of it. Is this normal? I'm afraid I may have made have made a bad purchase. I haven't ever bought a new coat (hand-me downs, thrift shops, etc.) so I decided it was time. I went for one that I thought looked cool, but now I can see little pieces of down on the outside of it all the time. I've had a down comforter before and never saw that happen, but it wasn't black. It's like a slow leak throughout the coat. Should I get over it, return it or just run the old lint roller over it daily?

Here is the coat (but mine's in black). I didn't pay that much, either.

Your favorite long (and long-lasting) wool coat?

Inspired by this thread, I'm thinking of investing in a real winter coat, of the long, wooly variety. Is anybody out there really, really satisfied with a long wooly coat that's held up for years and years and was affordable? Extra points if it buttons all the way up the neck, looks nice, and is orderable online! Really I'm just looking for a reputable place to buy something quality. All the usuals (J. Crew, Banana Republic, etc.) aren't really doing it for me. I love in Boston where it's cold, so it has to actually be pretty warm.

(And sorry for contributing to Ask-Meta-mad-consumerism-in-the-Christmas-season-Filter, if that's bad.)

How to keep my lungs warm when biking in the winter?

I'm wanting to do some outdoor bike training this winter, in preparation for going over the Rockies next summer. But, of course, riding in the winter isn't pleasant. The biggest problem I've run into is that my lungs start freezing when I get into a hard climb, while the rest of my body is overheating from the extra layers (essential for big downhills). Any tips on clothing choices that get the best of both worlds, or ways to keep my lungs warm?
