Describing a dress shirt.

I'm sartorially clueless. How would you describe this kind of shirt? It's a "dress shirt", sure, but how would you specify the fabric and cut (particularly that type of collar)? Here is another example. I'm looking to buy some shirts like these but when I go to department stores I can only find this sort of thing - which is cut completely differently and uses an extremely thin fabric. Help me articulate the differences.

Where can I find a "Cleveland Baracks" t-shirt? I saw one yesterday at the mall- it was light blue, short sleeved, and featured a smiling POTUS stenciled in black over the inscription, "CLEVELAND BARACKS." I Googled and checked eBay/Etsy to no avail, but there's enough documentation of the existence of these shirts to make me believe it's not a renegade crafter's shirt.

I would prefer to not commission a hand-stenciled shirt. I guess I *could* make one myself, but dammit, I'm lazy.

Shirts like that?

[FindThatShirtFilter/DressMeFilter] I know I'm supposed to be eyeing off this seller's Etsy products, but I'm sorta more interested in the shirt her model's wearing! Anyone know where I can find it? Or recognise what brand it is so I can check out their other gear? And/or (while I'm at it!), different stuff entirely but with a similar feel? My wardrobe needs some revisioning and I'm looking for stuff that's a bit more grown-up than tshirts (my current wardrobe, including for work, which is in a very casual office) whilst not being all stiff-plain-business-shirt corporate-ish either.

The shirt the model's wearing here (third pic down) is totally rockin' the (or "a") vibe I'm after: subtle pattern, soft-looking fabric (too rare in women's button-down shirts!), slightly dorky, not stiff or staid-looking (probably that pocket helps to keep it casual, here), not hyper femme but not masculine, capable of being worn to work or with jeans.... Know where I can find it?

Or stuff like it? I'm colour-open, at least in theory... whatever... I need some change. Dress me, MetaFilter!

How should I manage these garments?

Is my brother right about caring for these Brooks Brothers non-iron shirts? Help! I've recently acquired a half dozen lovely new Brooks Brothers non-irons (blue tag). I need to wear one tomorrow morning but they're kind of wrinkly from being recently purchased.

My brother swears that the best method for caring for them is to wash them cold and let them hang dry. This seems crazy to me because the nice lady at Brooks Brothers says to just wash and dry them like normal because the heat from the drier activates the resin that releases the wrinkles. BUT maaaybe she's just saying that so I go through the shirts faster by wearing them out! Thus necessitating the purchase of additional marvelous BB non-iron shirts!

1. Is my brother wrong?
2. To get one in working shape for tomorrow could I throw it in the dryer?

I'm a big guy and I'd like to get a dress shirt with French cuffs. Are there great online sellers for shirts like this, or perhaps you know of a better brick and mortar shop around Maryland/Washington, D.C. that can help me out? The local big guy store's French cuff selection is limited to Italian Mobster chic (striped lavender), while I'm going for more of a Stephen Fry look – a cream or white shirt to go with my dark gray corduroy jacket. I'd like it to be long, too, so it stays tucked into my pants without fuss.

No pressing deadline or budget, so maybe that opens up custom-made shirts from a tailor? Fit and comfort are much more important than style or formality, for this shirt.

Measurements, in case that's helpful:
20 neck, 36 sleeve, 60 chest

Where can I find this shirt?

Where can I find this shirt (or one like it)? Pictures: 1|2

I really don't know what you would call it - my best guess is "hooded henley", but searches for that return mostly girls shirts, and I'm assuming the shirt in question was designed for guys. As you can tell from the pictures, it is from a television show, but it's a few years old and was not very popular, so I'm having trouble finding the stylist(s) - I found one on IMDB, but I couldn't find a website or any contact information.

So, any ideas? Any help is much appreciated.

PDXShoppingFilter: Help me find a new favorite shirt in two days?

PDXShoppingFilter: Help me find a new favorite shirt in two days? So I have a shirt that, sadly, needs to be retired. I've had it for more than ten years now, and it's had a pretty nasty rip in the sleeve for at least four of those years, but you know how it is with your favorite shirt. Still, it's on its last legs (arms) and I think it's time to replace it.

Speaking of timing - I leave for vacation on Thursday morning and I would dearly love to pack my new favorite shirt. It's too late to shop on the internet, unfortunately, so it's got to be somewhere in Portland, Oregon and public-transport-accessible environs. I've really just got Tuesday and Wednesday nights left to find this. (Plus possibly lunch hours downtown.)

So here's what I'm looking for: a long-sleeve button-down oxford shirt, black or dark gray, preferably with a button-down collar though that bit's negotiable. Some folks call these "button-up" or "button-front" as well - the idea is, buttons down the front of it, buttons on the cuffs, possibly buttons on the collar. Heavier-weight cotton or a cotton blend is preferred, as opposed to those very thin dress shirt weaves; I need something that's going to take a lot of wear and not so thin that it's going to wrinkle if you look at it cross-eyed. I prefer the kind of shirt that's really intended to be casual but which in a pinch you could match with a blazer and maybe even a tie. I'd be looking for this shirt in a men's large or extra-large, depending on the cut. (I'm built wide in the shoulders, which makes it hard to find a comfortable fit sometimes.)

I'm afraid I don't know the specific make of the old shirt, but I want to say it was Lands End or something comparable. I'd link to an image but really, if you Google "long-sleeve button-down oxford", you'll see plenty. Wikipedia calls them dress shirts, and if you picture a casual shirt in that style, you'll be on the right track.

What do you think, AskMe? Where can I get such a thing in Portland in the next couple of days? Help!

Best New York tailors for alterations?

Best New York tailors for alterations? I've looked through the (many) previous AskMes on tailors in NY, but most of those posts are a bit old or are not specifically asking about a tailor for alterations. What I'd like to do: have two off-the-rack suits tailored to fit me better, and have 3-5 shirts tailored to cut down the sleeve length and, if possible, cut the back so that it doesn't balloon out so much. What are my options? And, just so I can know roughly what to expect, about how much should I expect to pay?

Thanks, all!

Find That Shirt!

Clothing Search: I was at H&M a few weeks ago and they had this sweet long-sleeved gray button-down with epaulettes on the shoulders and double breast pockets; none in my size. Sort of punk rock/nondescript uniform-looking. Any ideas where I can find the same thing online? It was basically a cross between this shirt, and this one.

I want to have tailored shirts

I want tailored shirts. Where can I find a good tailor? I currently live in Kansas, but would be willing to make a trip out to one of the coasts if needed. I have a few questions:

1. How much can I expect to pay?
2. How long do the shirts last?
3. Is it worth it to have a local seamstress make them for me?

I saw this thread about tailored clothes, but that one didn't have enough shirt specific info

Star Trek/Star Wars t-shirt - Where can I get this?? My boyfriend saw a t-shirt worn on (British) tv last week - I believe it was the Peter Serafinowicz show... anyway, Peter was wearing a t-shirt that read "Star Trek" but - this is the important bit - it was in the STAR WARS font.

I am very sorry for all you non-geeks out there now rolling your eyes.
Avoiding wrinkled shirts!

ClothingFilter: When dressing casually, I often wear button-down shirts out, rather than tucked in. The problem is that the moment you sit down, the bottom third of the shirt becomes a wrinkled mess, and looks terrible.
But I Don't Need It To Fit Under A Wetsuit

I am in search of a great tuxedo shirt. I need a new tux shirt, as my old one is sweat-stained and worn.

The shirt ought to be very traditional; French cuffs, white, tuxedo-style collar. Modern tux shirts are kind of fun, but not what I'm looking for here. Ideally, it will be of good quality (often tux shirts are really super-thin, such that when you take your jacket off, you can see your skin through the arms) and it must fit my ogreish frame: 17.5/37.

It would be fantastic if it were some sort of "tailored fit" - I am neither skinny nor fat, and dress shirts in my neck size and arm length always seem to be too billowy for me. But, this is sort of secondary; I'm willing to have a tailor alter it if need be. I'm mostly concerned about having sleeves that are long enough, and having a quality garment that I will enjoy wearing with the rest of my tux.

And, of course, it would be nice if it were reasonably priced - under $50 would be great. I realize that this may be unrealistic, but it's worth a shot. My normal go-to source for shirts would be Gap (for casual stuff and/or stuff where I'm not terribly concerned about longevity) or Land's End (for stuff where I'm not terribly concerned about "hipness"), but neither of them sell tuxedo shirts.

I bought my last tux shirt at the Men's Wearhouse, where I got the tux. It is "size XXL" which, as you could imagine, is about the least helpful thing out there. It is too short in the sleeves and the torso (comes untucked all the time), despite being enormously cut through the chest and belly.

Function or fashion?

Expensive dress shirts share some common features. Function or fashion? While browsing my closet this morning for a shirt to wear, I’ve notice that all of my more expensive shirts share some common characteristics. First of all, I’ve noticed that the cuffs of these shirts, where the fabric overlaps, are cut in an angle. Also, the last (lower) button opening is cut horizontally instead of vertically like the rest of the button openings. Any reasons for these features?

Seriously

What’s with the mystery fang holes in all my shirts? Within days of wearing a new shirt, it will develop tiny holes in the lower front center - er, the bellybutton area, more or less, down near the hem. Example here. Sometimes there’s just one hole, usually two, never more than two. When there are two, they are placed exactly like this - never closer together, never aligned differently.

Sometimes the holes take several wears to appear, but sometimes they show up on a brand-new shirt, on its first wearing. They are definitely not there before I’ve worn the shirt - I’ve gotten obsessive about checking shirts in the store. It sometimes happens before they go in the washing machine.

These are generally cotton or cotton blend tshirts and tank tops, cheap thin ones, usually from Target. They fit me appropriately; I don’t wear them tight. I don’t yank on them and I’m fairly certain I don’t have a belly-poking tic. This happened long before I had cats. I don’t own a snake.

I have asked a lot of people about this, and everybody wants to say the shirts are rubbing against the button on my pants, but they’re not. The holes have appeared in shirts worn only with jeans, and shirts worn with trousers with a hidden button. It has happened with shirts worn only with soft pajama bottoms (I work from home and sometimes don’t get dressed properly for days). I am willing to believe the center bit of my pants, whether jeans button or pajama drawstring, might very well rub against the fabric of a shirt enough to cause a small hole, over time. But on the first wearing??

This does not have to do with a bag strap or seatbelt rubbing against me - again, the working from home thing makes me sure of this. I do not wear a belt. I do not clip a phone or anything else to my waist. I do not have a navel ring.

I am not being sabotaged; this happened just as frequently when I lived alone.

This has been happening for YEARS, not that most people believe me. It happens to most of my shirts; infuriatingly, not to all of them. My boyfriend’s dad believes me, because it also happens to his shirts - but in the middle of the back. He has been equally unable to figure out the source.

This isn’t ruining my life or anything - they’re just six-dollar tshirts for bumming around in, and the holes don’t spread. I’m just curious as to whether this happens to anyone else, and whether there’s something I’m overlooking. Is it possible that cheap mass-produced clothing tends to have weak spots in the center?

I'm... Too casual for this shirt? (UK)

I have to go on a few job interviews for web producer positions in the UK. I've got a suit, and a collarless black jacket/suit which I quite like and isn't too far off the norm. But I need a good shirt.

What colour shirt should I go for? White? Blue? Lilac? Should it be a "name" shirt eg Boss, Ralph Lauren or will any good quality shirt do?

Spreadshirt vs. Cafepress

I have a vector design that's plot printable at Spreadshirt. But should I just take it to Cafepress (which I think is cheaper)? More generally, the two sites use different terminology to talk about printing: Cafepress talks about direct priting vs. heat transfer; Spreadshirt talks about digital vs. plot printing. How do all these compare, in terms of quality and price, assuming the designs are plot-printable without modification?

Where can I make my own clothes?

I want to make my own clothing.

I want to upload a design to a website, and get a shirt/sweater/jacket/whatever.

The two sites I know are cafepress and spreadshirt.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I'd like it to be fairly inexpensive or at least have the quality be equivalent to cost. What other sites are there besides cafepress and spreadshirt? Is it worth it?

Can I prevent my shirts from wearing out at the elbow?

I have a bony elbow. I know this because the left sleeve of all my dress shirts reliably get a hole in the same spot after a while, long before the rest of the shirt shows appreciable wear and tear. Is there anything I can do about this? I've thought about the possibility of elbow pads sewn inside the sleeve, but I don't want stitching visible and anything substantial enough to prevent the tear seems impractical.
