I took the dive into wedding planning and tried on dresses. It was fun, but everything felt pretty formal (and really expensive). I have seen interesting and more budget friendly dresses at places like Modcloth and so now I wonder: what other companies or stores carry wedding dresses? [more inside]
Many years of Anglophilic TV-watching have left me with a clothing question. What's the deal with the light brown, mid-length, indoor overcoat that certain British workers wear? [more inside]
I'm looking for a black, long sleeve cardigan that I can wear over a black lace dress to a semi-formal ("black tie optional," although people's dress tends to run the gamut from party/cocktail to full gowns) work event. I'd like it to be cropped or hit at/above the natural waist so it doesn't ruin the lines of a fit and flare dress. [more inside]
Found a lovely wool scarf in a charity shop today, complete with a washing instructions label sewn onto one end. Now, I'm thinking that seeing this dangling around in front of me would be annoying, so I should (gently) snip the seam and pull it off, right? Or not? Added bonus questions: how best to do this without ruining the scarf? And do folks generally snip out the labels from other clothes as well? Is this a thing?
I can walk, and I've used a manual wheelchair for years to travel longer distances, but now find it's most convenient for my knees to stay in my chair almost all day at my new job. I love almost everything about this strategy, except one: I am a confirmed pants-wearer, and I find the fabric wrinkles and presses into my thighs so that by the end of the day, my skin is itchy and irritated. I want a scarf. It's sold out. Any hope of finding it? I mean, sure, I don't NEED it, but it's amazing! Truely amazing. [more inside]
I was taking a walk and found that somebody had left four bags of women's clothing on the curb labeled "FREE CLOTHES" alongside a futon also presumably free. The road is kind of off to the side, and doesn't get that much foot traffic by nyc standards. I want to report this find in a way, to make it more likely that it will go to somebody who could make use of it. Is this a good idea? If it is, what would be a good way to do so? Have considered craigslist, FB neighborhood post, freecycle forum(?). [more inside]
I hate shopping. I need jeans. I do not want to buy clothes made by children. Can I buy Levi's? If not, what? [more inside]
I'm going up to Vancouver for the weekend soon and find myself with a bit of a clothing budget and a favorable exchange rate. I don't shop at the same stores as my woman friend up there due to differences in taste and size range, and my other woman friend there is off at a meditation retreat so I can't ask her. Given the preferences below the fold, where should I shop for clothes and shoes? [more inside]

I'm knitting a Weasley sweater for my niece (who lives far away). It's hard to get in touch with her parents. Can anyone give me an idea of what the average shoulder width for a thinnish, medium height ten year old girl would be? I want to make sure it's too big, so I'll be happy with ballpark numbers. Thanks!
While looking for dresses that I could wear to work paired with pretty scarves (just tied around the neck) without having to worry much about the weather or whether I'd shaved my legs or anything, I discovered this abaya and many more like it. They're perfect, except that I'm a white atheist American. Am I beanplating?
I have recently moved and I am looking for a better method of organizing my t-shirts. I have too many of them, and I would like to rotate through them rather than wear the same things every week. [more inside]
I really like the sweater Aaron Rodgers was wearing in his press conference after the Packers game last night. Can anyone help me figure out where I can buy one exactly like it?

Hi everyone, I have an interview tomorrow with a company for a really interesting job but I'm unsure of what to wear. Details below. [more inside]
There's a website that I found once but can't for the life of me find again that makes . . . like, custom basics? T-shirts, skirts, dresses, that sort of thing. All solid colors, sort of American Apparel-y. You can choose the fabric they use. One is a bamboo jersey, but there are 3 or 4 others. They MAY have an etsy shop, but what I found was a standalone website. What is it?? Have you seen it??
Just trying to understand my experience last week in SF. I received repeated, unsolicited comments while walking around town, related to my clothing. Is this normal? Is it just people being friendly? [more inside]
I need to get some jeans hemmed. I don't want them to look home-sewn. I'd like the hems to look like they do when they're bought. Can someone recommend a tailor either in Cypress or near I-10 and Washington?

Jones New York is apparently going under, so I'm looking for alternatives. Examples of what I like: this, this, and this. I'm looking for casual and business-casual clothes that are pretty standard with some interesting touches. My other main places to shop are Goodwill and Marshalls, where I look for Splendid, Loft, BR, James Perse, etc.
I spilled bleach on a beloved rugby shirt, and would like to try to repair or replace it. Help? [more inside]
I'm bummed that Coldwater Creek has gone bottoms-up. Who's their best online replacement?
Going to my first-ever yoga class this Sunday. Late 30s male. What should I wear? And what should I bring with me? I am going to a beginner's class at Pure Yoga on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Thanks.
Apparently every store I like to shop at now makes all of their button-down shirts and blouses semi-sheer (Loft is the biggest offender). The trouble is that I'm REALLY hot natured and try to wear as few non-removable layers as possible (cotton tanks as a layer are too hot). I'm hoping someone can link to tanks made of really, really thin material or some kind of miracle solution that doesn't require another layer of clothes. Any suggestions of how I can layer without feeling layered?
I'm attending a wedding in Mumbai this upcoming weekend and am having a crisis of apparel. [more inside]
My mother is visiting Berkeley and would like to shop for clothing. She is 80 and her taste runs to Koret and Coldwater Creek but both of those have become online only. Can you recommend a brick and mortar clothing store where she might enjoy shopping for herself? She would be interested in a chain store or an interesting boutique.
I really enjoy the freedom of movement that comes from not carrying a bag and was wondering if you had any suggestions for a) women's clothes/unisex clothes/appealing men's jackets or other clothes with deep pockets b) some other alternative? [more inside]
Too many years of casual clothing-living has left me with no frame of reference. I'm attending my first opera next month and I'm wondering what the proper attire is. The opera is in Los Angeles and, if it makes any difference, I'm sitting in the nose bleed section.
I'm a fat woman (US sizes like 26-28 at the moment), newishly arrived to Washington DC. Where can I buy some clothes my size, in a brick-and-mortar store where I can try them on, and if possible that's near public transportation? My job involves some physical work and can get a bit dusty/dirty; I tend to wear jeans or cords, and a button shirt with the sleeves rolled up. [more inside]
I will be traveling to Goa in the next couple days but only for about 10 days. Usually I have time to get clothes tailor made but probably not this time. so I need recommendations for stores where I can buy reasonably priced ready to wear casual clothes in Panaji, Vasco or environs. Because I don't visit often, and have relied on tailor made, I dont know where to go. [more inside]

My dermatillomania has worsened, and I'm biting and picking at my fingers all day and in my sleep, causing a fair amount of damage and pain. I want to find some gloves I can wear at night and perhaps at work to help curb this until I can get it under control. Does anyone have any insight into everyday-wear gloves? [more inside]
I'm doing field work in a hot climate and need to order some skirts online before I go. I'm having trouble finding skirts that fit my pretty specific requirements, but you have been really helpful with "find me this clothing item" requests in the past. Can the hive mind make some recommendations? [more inside]
My boyfriend is a bike mechanic and he's going to be providing support for a large mountain bike stage race taking place over six days. He asked me to come, which sounds like a fun active vacation thing to do. It will be him and his business partner in a company truck, and me in a second car. There will be hot sweaty days of work, chilly nights and a mix of car camping and possibly a hotel here and there. I'd like advice on clothing and what else I should bring, for comfort and utility. I'm a bit obsessed with women's tunics at the moment. Especially ones that have a semi-Indian look. Metafilter is so great at finding amazing clothing resources and I wondered if anyone has a good source for tunics or kurtis shipped from inside the United States? (I'm concerned about customs or courier fees for items shipped from other countries.) Thanks for any leads!
Thanks to this comment, I've learned about shirt garters/shirt stays. Who knew?! And I have questions. Do you have experience with these straps of contraption? [more inside]
My wife has accepted a post-doc position in the University of Wisconsin system with duration of around two years. Where exactly in Wisconsin is slightly up in the air, but no matter where we end up, we have a host of questions to ask about moving there and Wisconsin life in general. Once we know where we're actually going, we may have more questions about the area, but right now I think our biggest concern is winter. [more inside]
I recently acquired a beautiful, brand new designer dress that's much nicer than anything I've had in my wardrobe before. I've worn it once and have been hanging it up to air out. Is it better to get it dry cleaned before storing it, or will it be easier on the fabric to put it away in its worn-once state? I don't want to put unnecessary stress on the fabric from the dry cleaning process, but I really, really don't want to find moth holes in the dress several months from now, either. [more inside]
I have seen fashion/clothing sites where on the product page the brand has dress/pant/shirt etc. options. There is a blank image of the pants, etc. Below the image is a choice of colors or design. When you scroll over a color you then see what the color will look like on the pants. Does anyone know any brands that have this on there sites? I have seen them in the past yet none of them are coming to mind. I am building a website right now and would like to show this to my designer.
So, for the longest time, I have coveted some of the vests sold by San Fransisco alt clothing store Five and Diamond such as this. I like getting occasionally dressed up and I tend to favor stark contrasts of a white collard shirt with something else (a vest a tie etc.) when I do. I am looking for something like that but, as in the linked vest, with a little extra pizazz That being said, I don't get dressed up often enough these days (nor do I necessarily make enough money) to rationalize dropping that much money on a single item. Anyone have cheaper ideas of where to find similar items?
Where can I find cool clothes outside of the normal mens range in regular sizes? [more inside]
