What do I do with my similar design?

My design is very similar to theirs but I hadn't seen theirs ahead of time. What trouble do I get into if I continue on and sale mine? I have been working on a certain graphic/design to go on clothing for the past few months. Last month or so I saw a similar design created by someone else already on fabric. The two are very similar and I hadn't seen theirs previously. What kind of trouble would I get into if I continued and sold mine? Do I need to make them aware of this? I was unaware of theirs when I began working on it and was under the impression that mine was an original thought. I don't want to throw it out if I don't need to.

How do I show off my pipes?

Does anyone have any experience or advice on building a clothing/display rack out of pipes? Firstly, I don't know anything about plumbing, building things, or generally being handy.

I suspect it might be simple enough to construct a simple clothing rack out of steel pipes, but I'm posting here in case I'm mistaken so someone can tell me not to waste my time.

It would basically be a rectangular frame held together by 45 degree elbow joints, with a 4-directional joiner on each corner at the bottom so that parallel pipes can be fitted as a base.

(I'd sketch out a design but I'm worse at drawing than I am at words).

I'd like to know if something like this would be sturdy enough without having to weld anything together, and any tips/terminology that would make me sound less moronic in front of the staff at the hardware store.

My boyfriend wants to experiment with designing menswear - both casual and formal (he's had experience sewing wedding dresses). Looking for:

Standard books/design he should look at (incl pattern-making books) - what are the 'canon' books/ideas?

Online resources for menswear design and construction

Favorite fabric stores in Chicago (preferably not in the suburbs)

Help me find sites like www.threadless.com Basically looking for cool, original, design inspired shirts. If possible - on the low end of the pricing spectrum.

Any suggestions?

Spreadshirt vs. Cafepress

I have a vector design that's plot printable at Spreadshirt. But should I just take it to Cafepress (which I think is cheaper)? More generally, the two sites use different terminology to talk about printing: Cafepress talks about direct priting vs. heat transfer; Spreadshirt talks about digital vs. plot printing. How do all these compare, in terms of quality and price, assuming the designs are plot-printable without modification?

Where can I make my own clothes?

I want to make my own clothing.

I want to upload a design to a website, and get a shirt/sweater/jacket/whatever.

The two sites I know are cafepress and spreadshirt.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I'd like it to be fairly inexpensive or at least have the quality be equivalent to cost. What other sites are there besides cafepress and spreadshirt? Is it worth it?

What cool t-shirts use American Apparel?

Where can I get more cool designs printed on t-shirts from American Apparel? I have one from spamusement.com (the Cabinet Sanchez shirt that is no longer in stock), one from Achewood, and one from the Decemberists (not the shirt shown but a green one with the same design). I love how soft and comfy the shirts are, and as a big girl, the men's XL fits me perfectly. I would be happy if I could just wear them every day. The AA store just opened in Seattle but I like shirts with stuff printed on them so I was just wondering if the cool folks here could offer some suggestions of other places on the web (or RL in Seattle) where I can get these comfy shirts that would also be cool and interesting.

Origin of American Art Wear t-shirt?

Where do t-shirts come from? I bought a t-shirt from a thirft store with a funny print. It reads "America. Made by Humans." It's a standard baseball style shirt otherwise, but its tag was "American Art Wear." I'm interested in the printing of the t-shirt more than the original manufacturer of the shirt. The manager of the store said something a bit cryptic: that the owner/clothes buyer gets most of the tees off the backs of trucks at trade fairs. Who is in the business of printing t-shirts for this kind of distribution? Who is "American Art Wear"?
