Hey clothes-loving folks! I've been reading about capsule wardrobes, paring down clothing, and other minimalism-type posts My question is- does anyone know of a good post on capsule wardrobes/minimalism that has color in it? Something along the lines of "hey, I'm a minimalist and I love color, here's how that works" [more inside]
i want an office wardrobe I don't have to think about. Please help! [more inside]
I'm going up to Vancouver for the weekend soon and find myself with a bit of a clothing budget and a favorable exchange rate. I don't shop at the same stores as my woman friend up there due to differences in taste and size range, and my other woman friend there is off at a meditation retreat so I can't ask her. Given the preferences below the fold, where should I shop for clothes and shoes? [more inside]
My job's dress code is extremely strict, to the point where I might as well just reduce my stress level and buy several of the same thing to wear every day. The most important, hard-to-find item: a goldilocks dress shirt. Details inside. [more inside]
I got a desk job last year and with it came about 30lbs and I've gone from just being tall to being big and tall. I'm gathering momentum for working out but I need to dress the body I have right now. [more inside]
I really like the sweater Aaron Rodgers was wearing in his press conference after the Packers game last night. Can anyone help me figure out where I can buy one exactly like it?
I found this pair of shorts at a thrift stores years ago and absolutely love them. They are the most comfortable pair of shorts I have ever worn, and I have just about worn them out. I would very much appreciate any thoughts on how to find this specific design, material, and where to find/buy information you may have! Thanks in advance! [more inside]
I'm going out tonight and bought something to wear which I'm now totally unsure about and I only have a few hours to panic-buy a replacement if it's unsuitable. So fashion mavens of MeFi - should I wear this or, as always, am I All Wrong? [more inside]
I have managed to accumulate (over time and several bad buying decisions) three pairs of quality-make men's shoes of different types, all in nearly-new condition, that I don't want or can't wear, and I'd like them to go to someone who could really use them. The thing they have in common is each has a non-obvious flaw that would cause buyer's regret in anyone who actually paid money for them, so Goodwill is out. [more inside]
Situation: I'm going to a major environmental nonprofit's fundraising gala/ball. More details inside. [more inside]
I am having a heck of a time finding casual shirts for my husband that cover his entire top half. He's not tall, he's not big, but regular shirts are just not long enough. [more inside]
Jones New York is apparently going under, so I'm looking for alternatives. Examples of what I like: this, this, and this. I'm looking for casual and business-casual clothes that are pretty standard with some interesting touches. My other main places to shop are Goodwill and Marshalls, where I look for Splendid, Loft, BR, James Perse, etc.
My suit now smells of something petroleum-based, which I assume is the dry cleaning chemicals. After four days of hanging in a well ventilated room the smell is fainter but still there, so I plan to take it somewhere else to clean it again. I'm just really curious about this as it's never happened to me before. My question for the right honorable Green is what could the cleaners possibly have done wrong to cause this? I thought dry cleaning was pretty much completely automated and foolproof now and there wouldn't be much chance of something so basic going wrong.
I love cardigans, but I'm tired of my cotton cardigans pilling / wearing out. What are your favorite cardigan brands that are super durable? [more inside]
Going to my first-ever yoga class this Sunday. Late 30s male. What should I wear? And what should I bring with me? I am going to a beginner's class at Pure Yoga on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Thanks.
Looking for ready-made patches smaller than 1 inch to sew onto home-made shirts, but am finding patches twice as large or websites that invite me to create a custom order of their top quality wares. [more inside]

I'm swimming laps, following the 0 to 1650 program, and my swim cap always starts coming off around the 400-yard mark. I end up having to stop and fix it a lot. What could I be doing wrong? I don't know what I'm doing, please help [more inside]
Who is selling plain fleece clothing this year for children/teens? Mail order or big mall OK. [more inside]
I'm a fat woman (US sizes like 26-28 at the moment), newishly arrived to Washington DC. Where can I buy some clothes my size, in a brick-and-mortar store where I can try them on, and if possible that's near public transportation? My job involves some physical work and can get a bit dusty/dirty; I tend to wear jeans or cords, and a button shirt with the sleeves rolled up. [more inside]
Any recommendations for a brand of cycling short that has a longer leg and a bit of a slimmer fit than the standard MTB/touring short, but still keeping their casual style? [more inside]
I have a new shirt that smells terrible. Difficulty level: no washing machine. [more inside]
I recently acquired a beautiful, brand new designer dress that's much nicer than anything I've had in my wardrobe before. I've worn it once and have been hanging it up to air out. Is it better to get it dry cleaned before storing it, or will it be easier on the fabric to put it away in its worn-once state? I don't want to put unnecessary stress on the fabric from the dry cleaning process, but I really, really don't want to find moth holes in the dress several months from now, either. [more inside]
Where can I find cool clothes outside of the normal mens range in regular sizes? [more inside]
The focus should be on the bride, NOT on the taffeta-covered hobo skulking around the cheese trays: please, PLEASE help me (a non-fancy-dressing lady) dress myself for the four weddings I'll be attending this year. (Sequins shaped like) snowflakes inside! [more inside]
Synthetic funk has set into my clothes. They smell even after washing. These are otherwise good quality clothes. Halp. [more inside]
You're enjoying your morning coffee when you realize you never put your work pants in the dryer last night. What do you do, hot shot? What do you do? [more inside]
I've been trying to figure out what this strange, accordion-like contraption is. It was attached to my friend's radiator in his ~1950s-era apartment in Philadelphia. It was only secured with one bolt at 90 degrees to the radiator, but it also originally had a sheet metal housing around it that could be removed. It seems to me like it might be some kind of clothes hanger/dryer, but I have no idea. Does anyone know?
Where can I buy good-quality yoga clothes in the UK? My mum wants some for Christmas and I'd love your recommendations for comfortable yoga clothes for more mature women (say 60+). Basically she doesn't want skintight leggings or any obtuse logos, etc. She'd like darker colours (although 'a little bit of colour but not too bright' is ok). Bonus if the store is online and offers shipping. Thanks!
My kiddo, like his dad, has a pants problem. Specifically, while his legs are only slightly longer than normal, he is built in such a way that regular pants don't make it far enough up his butt. Basically, he needs pants that are longer in the crotch-to-waistline area and can pull up higher. Most boy pants don't have a lot of room for that. We end up with either plumber crack or uncomfortably hitched pants. [more inside]
I am looking for a new clothing supplier. The previous company I shopped with have been outed as a bunch of labour-abusing dirtbags and I can't have that. I need to know the names of some places I can buy clothes with confidence and conscience and was hoping maybe I could get some suggestions. [more inside]
In the latest season of Project Runway, there was a challenge in which the prize was to have your design produced and sold by Belk. I'd love to purchase Dom's design, and I've been stalking the Belk website since, but there have been no updates, much less actual dresses for sale. Anyone know if/when this is ever going to happen, and if they'll be sold online? (Maybe they're only appearing in physical stores, but seems like they are really missing out on a marketing opportunity if that's the case!)
I'm looking for T-shirts or tank tops to wear while exercising. I'm 5'10" but wear regular length pants; my above-average height is all in my torso. I haven't found any tall-sized workout clothes. Please advise. [more inside]
I'm trying to build a small wardrobe of versatile, well made, neutral basics(who isn't?), with a twist. I have work clothes provided by my employer, so I only need happy fun time clothes. I have nice plain T's. I need some shirts that are a step up but not button downs; I have to wear them at work and hate them. I'm a woman, mid-forties, 5'3", pear shaped, size 4/6/8 depending on the brand. I have a small waist and enjoy emphasizing it in a fully covered, non-binding way. My budget is about $100 a piece. Suggestions?
I need to go to a wedding in 2 weeks. I own no clothes except jeans & shorts. I'm 25. I haven't worn a skirt or anything since I was 15, and it was awful then. But I would like to wear clothes that are awesome. I really like this pinboard, and in particular this outfit, though with less pattern & scarf. Basically I've been looking enviously at awesome lesbian wedding pictures. Where should I shop? What should I buy? I am totally at a loss. [more inside]
I am in need of comfortable, loose, modest pants/trousers suitable for sitting cross-legged on the floor for long periods of time. This will be in public, so unfortunately pj's are out. Preferrably under 40US and not hideous to look at. Yoga pants are too form-fitting. I'm a US ladies size 8/10 with a small waist, womanly hips and thighs and 5'3"ish. Any ideas?
OK, so I need to dress better -- up my act, look a bit classier or cuter or generally not like a boy in college. Part eleventy billion. [more inside]
I bought a pair of Levi 559 jeans at the Levi outlet store in Arizona about a year ago. I love them as they are stretchy which conforms better to me and ultra comfortable. However, in searching for similar materials at stores all over, I cannot find the same material and fit with the same 559's! My question is why this happens, why some jeans at say Macy's aren't the same size, fit and of a different material at say Penney's and how you deal with this as someone who hates to try on clothes? Thanks!
I am looking for black, elastic-waist, inexpensive, "business casual" women's dress pants, available in the US and preferably online. [more inside]
I think I have all the pieces for my interview outfit. Can you help me put them together appropriately? [more inside]
I was given some photographs of old relatives that were found in a box in my great-grandfather's house after he passed away. All but one photo is someone I can identify. I have no information on that one photo, which is of an old woman standing on a path in front of a farmhouse. I'd like to at least get an idea of the era so I can begin narrowing down the identify of the woman. [more inside]
I learned today that it's dangerous to store combustibles such as clothing near the fuse box or electrical intake. I keep my off-season wardrobe under the stairs, and the electrical intake/fuse box is also under the stairs. How far away do I need to keep this stuff? What is a safe distance? Is it feasible to use compact-o-stuff vacuum bags to reduce the crowding in the understair cupboard? [more inside]
I'll be traveling to the northeast next week and I've realized that I don't own any shoes that are remotely suitable for trapising about on the cold, potentially snowy or slushy sidewalks of Boston. When I lived there I wore my Dr. Martens everywhere and they were great, but I've since learned that they don't play nicely with my issue-prone feet, and anyway I need something that will be comfortable to wear for long periods of time and not particularly bulky, which puts most snow or combat-type boots out. I know this is kind of a silly question, but I'm really stumped as to where to start looking. So, residents of similar climes, what do you wear on your feet that keeps them relatively warm and dry but still fairly comfortable? Suggestions for specific models and brands or general types welcome.
Cluelessly-dressed 30-year-old office-working lady here. I have come to the conclusion that it is in my best interest to start leaning much more toward the business side of business casual on a daily basis. Professional women/fashion mavens of Metafilter, could you lend me a hand with these business wear-related queries? [more inside]
Stylefilter! I love my new puppy. I love my boyfriend. I love that my boyfriend loves waking up early and taking the puppy outside. However, he doesn't love getting fully dressed at 6 am in his normal clothes, and I don't love things like track suits and crocs. Help! [more inside]
