I'd like to add captions to my YouTube videos and preferably not do it by hand. YouTube recommends this software but I have a Mac. Is there something free or cheap I can use? Any other tips? Thanks.

I've got an upconverting DVD player hooked up to an HDTV via an HDMI cable. I can't get the closed captions to display at all, and I know I'm not the only person to have this problem. Any suggestions? [more inside]

The FCC seems to indicate that broadcasters are required to include closed captioning, at least for new programming, but I have purchased several very recent movies on cable that lack closed captioning. How are the cable companies getting around these requirements? Why is closed captioning so inconsistent? [more inside]

TVFilter: I've got a newish Magnavox TV (model # 27MT3305/17) that has decided, whenever it turns on after being off for a few hours, that it's going to be on closed captioning (CC1). Obviously, I can just turn it off with the remote, but does anyone know how to stop making it the default setting?

I have a JVC TV/VCR combo. We have not been able to turn off closed captioning off for a week. It's not that we're stupid, it's that we're having complications with the remote. We apparently never had the original remote, and have to use a universal remote that does not work nearly as well as it should. I know the serial number of the TV VCR combo, I just cannot find the three digit code of the remote the universal should be emulating, even after extensive searching. The serial number is TV-20F242. Any advice as to how to fix this? [more inside]
