ssh sessions when port 22 is locked down?

I sometimes visit a network where port 22 is locked down. I'd like to be able to initiate ssh sessions from this site. Is there any tunneling or other magic I can invoke to reach this goal, or any other solution short of badgering the admins? (I'm also not sure now to find out what other ports are open. I know 21,80, and 443 are, because I can do normal web and ftp stuff, but other than manually trying each port with telnet, I'm not sure how to check...)

Old Prices for John Hancock Income Security Trust

OldFinancialInformationFilter: Figuring out cost basis for John Hancock Income Securities Trust (JHS) under its previous CUSIP. I'm trying to track down the closing price for John Hancock Income Securities Trust (JHS) for the following dates:

March 17, 1973
Sept 6, 1973
Sept 7, 1973

According to this page, the fund was created Feb 14, 1973, and changed its CUSIP on Dec 31, 1984. The former CUSIP number was #410122105, and apparently the symbol JHS was assigned in 2000.

I can find prices for the fund as far back as 1991, but no earlier.

[you guys did a great job last time I had a question like this.]

Ooh, what's inside there?

So what's inside areas that are closed off to the public, in buildings? I know places like hospitals have certain areas that are closed off to the public because they are morgues, have hazardous materials inside, or whatever...but there's other places I have trouble guessing why they restrict access.

Some examples:

On my campus, the library, business, and education buildings have areas where students and sometimes faculty aren't allowed. Same thing with the dorms, but it is even weirder. Some of the stairwells are locked. Isn't that a fire hazard? One of the dorms obviously have a fourth floor, yet no one lives up there, and you can't get there from the stairs or elevator.

Not too long ago, I looked at the floor plan of my favorite casino, and noticed that there was at least five rooms that didn't have a number or name.

As for elevators...I sometimes see keyholes instead of buttons on certain floors. It's usually the very top or very bottom floor(s).

I don't know if this is urban legend or not...I heard that the 13th floor in some buildings aren't open to the public. Superstitious much?If that's true, what's there?

CC outside the US?

Is the term “caption” or “closed caption” and the “CC in a TV” symbol commonly recognizable to non-U.S. people? Working on producing some Flash video content with English audio for which subtitles will be available in multiple languages, including European, South American, and Asian languages. Would non-English-speaking people know that the “CC” symbol in a user interface control indicates the option for subtitling?

Wikipedia says that most of the world make no distinction between “subtitles” and “captions.” Is there a standard terminology and semiology to indicate this feature as universally as possible?

Eyes Wide Shut

I learned yesterday that I do what someone described as "slow blinking" or "long blinking"--essentially, when giving a lecture or talking in a formal environment, I keep my eyes closed for 2-3 seconds at a time when I blink. I have apparently been doing this subconsciously and habitually for awhile. I want it to stop. I can't seem to find any good information on this problem (I keep getting links to computer blinking lights). In addition to general information, I am also looking for clever ideas as to how to help me realize when I am doing it. I don't think it is a medical condition- I was just at the eye doctor recently. I think it is more likely a communication issue, but just knowing I do it and being aware of it has not corrected it.

Can I view CC information on my monitor?

Can I view the closed caption information on my plasma monitor which is hooked up to my dish network receiver? I have a Panasonic plasma monitor that I use for my TV. I bought a monitor instead of a TV because I didn't need an intergrated tuner or speakers. The one feature it doesn't have that I would like is to be able to view the closed caption information. I have a dish network 501 receiver, hooked up through s-video. None of this is HD.

Is there any good solution for this?

International delivery attempts

I'm in the UK. I've been expecting a package from the states via USPS. They will not be able to get into my building. How/where can I pick it up? I am pretty sure they are not going to be able to deliver to my flat because it's a gated building, and they can't even leave a note because the flat admin is sort of stupid and they put the mailboxes inside the complex (only Royal Mail has keys).

I've looked up the tracking number and it says they already attempted a delivery yesterday but of course I wasn't home. How can I get my package? I don't want them to send it back and this is a situation that will occur with some frequency in the future.

Why must the toilet seat be left down?
[more inside - if you'll pardon the phrase] Okay... I can understand why anyone would like the idea of the lid being put down, but why is there always an argument about the damned seat?

The only answer I've ever got is that the toilet ceramic is cold if you sit on it. Excuse me? Men get nagged because you might not be observant enough to notice the toilet is part missing?

Am I missing something, or is this a random bit of gender bias?

How can I check remotely whether the garage door is open or closed?

A method of determining the opened/closed status of my garage door [More inside] My townhouse doesn't have indoor access to the garage, which means always having to walk outside to check if I remembered to close the garage door (very annoying when it's -30 outside). I'm trying to figure out a low cost method of determining whether the garage door is up or down.

I've thought of something along the lines of a LED in the hall closet next to the garage door opener which would turn on if the door is open. However I have little imagination in actually making it work.

Could anyone offer up a suggestion to rig such a device (and maybe provide a nice list of supplies I can take to Radio Shack to get it done?)
