Alternative to crooksandliars

I have trouble keeping up with the big political news on television. So I use the clips on crooksandliars.com as a way of staying on top of what the current political stories are and how they are being discussed. What I don't like is the editorializing. It's not that I disagree with all their takes, I just find that the way they push their agenda distracts from what I am trying to get from the site. Is there another blog that can keep me up to date with the current television news cycle that is a bit more unbiased? Specifically one that includes video clips of the pundit discussions?

How do I put a presentation in my pocket?

If I am looking to play videos off a USB key at presentations, what software should I load onto it for maximum compatibility? A client of mine travels extensively and often requires video clips at presentations mostly around North America but sometimes overseas as well. In the past, I have burned the video clips onto DVDs with menus to try and ensure maximum compatibility, but I am considering putting everything on a USB key so I can send the files over the internet instead of having to send a DVD for every presentation.

I want to be able to load everything onto a USB key and simply have my client plug in the USB key and everything will be good to go on a standard Windows machine. I assume most places are using XP, but the solution has to be able to work on any Vista machines too. Bonus points if you can make it Mac compatible too.

1) What portable video player would you recommend that can fit on a USB key? (2 GB)
2) What file format would be best for videos for this purpose?
3) Any other suggestions?

Thanks everyone!

The end is here

It's over! Finished! All done!! And I need the audio clips to prove it..... So, I am responsible for writing an application for a conference the week after next, in which there will be something similar to speed dating. Nothing romantic, it's basically vendors on one side meeting with suppliers on the other side. My application, among other things, generates an automatic prompt along the lines of "*ding* Please move to appointment two...", as well as announcing the beginning and ending of breaks. At the very end of the last session of the day, it also plays a final sound queue to announce the end of the day. There are four days, so I would like four different clever audio clips to announce the end of the day. I already have one of Roy Orbison singing "It's over...." and I am looking for others. This is a business environment, so all clips must be safe for work. They should also be enough of a pop culture meme to be recognizable.

Suggestions?

How do I rip just parts of a DVD to a format suitable for YouTube, and not the entire DVD? I recently purchased a VHS to DVD burner and now I would like to take only parts or certain clips of the DVD and convert them to a format that I can upload to YouTube. Any suggestions on how do to this without ripping the entire DVD?

Where to find cheap bulldog clips in Montreal?

What's the cheapest way for me to buy 20-40 bulldog clips, probably in various sizes? I'm in Montreal. I realise we're only talking about $20 or so, but I'm frustrated at getting ripped off.

They're $0.40-$0.85 each at Omar Deserres, plus tax, which seems really overpriced. You can buy 36-packs at a couple of websites I found, but they always come to a little over $20 incl. tax and delivery. (Also I'd have to buy just one size.)

It would be great to find somewhere that is either local, or online-but-cheap/speedy-enough that I can make multiple orders if I end up needing more.

Is there a good source for bulk/loose art or office supplies in Montreal? Or a Canadian website that's particularly affordable?

I'd prefer the silver clips that meet nicely at the tip, over the cheap widely-available black ones. What I'd really love are clips that have a strip of fabric or rubber where the metal meets; I'm using the clips to hang artworks and want to damage the paper as little as possible.

help me tame my feral hair!

I need hairbands, and hopefully barrettes to help tame the wild animal attacking my head. I googled and searched ask for prior answers and nothing really clicked for me, so I'll try to be specific. I need cute, pretty, stylish ponytail holders and/or clips that WORK, period. They have to have enough volume for some seriously thick hair, and they have to have some 'grab' cos it's slippery, too.

I have some hair bands but i really don't care much for the alice-in-wonderland look (for me) plus my hair is a little aggro for them too (they slip off easily). I much prefer the single clip / ponytail idea, except that i have not yet found a clip with the volume to hold this mess. it slips/springs out and frizzes all over the place and breaks ponytail holders. scrunchies slip off immediately.

I have some seriously thick hair, like, i measured the volume with a piece of string and the diameter is 1 3/8" give or take a sixteenth. Add to that the texture is... well the closest thing i can think of is a horse's mane. it's thick, springy, SLIPPERY and full of cowlicks... meaning it's not curly, but not straight either. it patently REFUSES to hold a braid, i don't care what products you use or how tight you yank it, and a braid pulling at my temples gives me a headache anyhow.

the benefit is that when it's down, it's a glorious, glossy, thick, shiny, full-of-body mane of porn-star hair. GREAT for going out, and the dude loooves it. so i'm not going to cut it. the challenge is that i need to keep it back at work (it gets everywhere and drives me nuts when i have to have my head down writing or whatever).

so, help point me towards some stylish, snazzy hair clips, ponytail holders and accessories that can stand up and latch onto my ornery-assed hair.

Close Encounters of the YouTube kind.

Tin-foil Sunday: What's the deal with this infamous web-video of a strange creature in a Spanish/South-American forest? I'm talking about the freaky The fallen angel/alien creature of Spain/South America, depending on who posts it on youtube or any other clip-repository.

First, I personally do not believe for a second in any of the flying-saucer stuff. So no, it isn't 'real'.

However.. this clip seems to be of a pretty decent quality. It may actually be low-budget, but it just seems to 'work' very well, and did in fact freak me out the first time I saw it.

Does anyone know who (and how) anyone would make such movies? Is there anything behind it? A clip from some obscure production? A viral commercial video?

Oh, and another candidate for the same questions: the "Mexico alien".

It's like finding a sword in a haystack

Dear kind folks Ask Metafilter: I am Desperately seeking public domain/creative commons footage of knights fighting. I'm looking for some footage of people or knights duking it out with swords. I've tried browsing through the public domain archives on the internet, but I haven't found much of anything. I now place myself at the mercy of the internet. Does anyone know of a place I can get video clips of sword fights from old films? Or, does anyone have any ideas of films that are in the public domain that feature sword fights?

Thanks in advance!

Examples of poor customer service/angry customers in movies.
I need scenes from classic or popular movies that depict poor customer service or angry customers or both. So far, I've got:

the diner scene from "5 Easy Pieces"

the rental care scene from "Planes trains and automobiles"
what movies have good reenactment scenes concerning the american revolution?

What movies or documentaries have good scenes that could help me demonstrate important topics surrounding the American Revolution? I teach 8th grade. I don't want to show an entire movie, as I think this is often a waste of precious little classroom time, but I would like to punctuate our discussions and activities with scenes illustrating a particular point or topic.

example: I imagine that a reading on the Boston Masacre would be particularly more interesting if it were followed by a short clip of it in action.

I'm pretty adpet at ripping dvds to divx and slicing them into bite sized chunks.

Best soundclips from sci-fi films?

Remember my request for sci-fi music? Six months later, I'm finally ready to make my CD mix. Almost. Last night I figured out how to record mp3 audio from DVD on my Mac, and now I want to rip key dialogue snippets from classic sci-fi films. I went for Khan spitting at Kirk from his grave, but there's too much incidental music. I think maybe I can get Ripley signing off. What other short, iconic soundclips from sci-fi films should I look for? The intro to the old Battlestar Galactica? Something from Logan's Run? Blade Runner bits? Eerie, ethereal, otherworldly, outer-space stuff is best. (Bonus points if you can direct me to a source that's already done the work for me; right now I'm looking at a several-week Netflix slog.)

What's a good "Swiss Army Knife" information tool?

I need a "Swiss Army Knife" information tool. Any suggestions? I just started a job where I need a good "Swiss Army Knife" information gathering tool. I tried to do some creative Googling, but I think my needs may be too broad.

I've thought about using a variety of services like Del.icio.us and a separate news reader, but I'm really looking for something nice and integrated.

I had been looking at Onfolio earlier in the year after it went 2.0, but I don't want to use them now that it's just online-only.

Here's some of the req's:

- Should have some sort of RSS reader built-in

- Collecting Web "clippings" should be simple

- I'd like to be able to read Web "clippings" offline and be able to send them to other people as need be

- Outlook integration of any kind would be a plus

- I'd like to be able to make notes, add files, too.

- Should be relatively inexpensive (under $40 would be a plus)

Any ideas you have would be most appreciated.

Seeking pro-legalization clips

MaryJaneFilter: I'm looking for audio clips (mp3, wav, whatever) relating specifically to the drug prohibition / war on drugs debate in the US. Seeking both well-reasoned dialog as well as red-faced rants from BOTH sides of the debate (both for and against legalization), but I'm mostly interested in stuff related to marijuana. It's for a music project, so copyright-free clips would be ideal.
A friend is preparing a film course. Does anybody know where I can find clips of the very first films, like "The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat Station" by Louis Lumière for example, or even some of the pre-lumiere "films", such as those shown at penny arcades?
