I've been watching more of the FAIL/WIN & People Are Awesome videos on YouTube than I should. Many of them contain (by now familiar to everyone) scenes of teenagers hanging one-handed off the top of a gargantuan crane. Are there known deaths from attempts to do that, or something similar? I googled, but couldn't find anything.
More details inside, but at what point is it considered gauche to want to top rope the first time you climb a route. [more inside]
Asking for Gnik Nus. Flying across the country to go rock climbing, a sport which relies on lots of heavy (and need I say pricey) gear. Will also be taking a bus from the airport to the destination. So, in an attempt to avoid lugging all the equipment, thinking about using USPS flat rate shipping boxes to have the stuff go to the house that's been rented specifically for this trip. [more inside]

I am interested to read some commentary / discussion / critiques / first-person accounts about social climbing in our current society (preferably U. S. based). I live on the second floor of a building, and some of my family has difficultly climbing the stairs. If I'm not able to come up with a solution they won't be able to visit. There is no elevator. The railing is a simple metal one. There are about 25 stairs. Are there any creative ideas I'm missing?

A good friend of mine has recently become very interested with all things Everest. Several nights after having a couple of beers, he has asked our group of friends if they think it was possible for someone to have summited Everest before Sir Edmond Hillary, or attempted to summit before George Mallory. One half of the group is adamant that such a feat was impossible before 1921 due to a lack of proper equipment and a cultural reverence for the mountain. The other half believe that it was certainly possible because of the length of human occupation in the region, the adaptation of the Tibetan people to higher altitudes, and the innate ambition of man. Does anyone have scientific evidence for either side of the debate or an educated opinion?

I planted some dry beans I bought in grocery store. They all sprouted. There were 5-6 varieties, big white ones, black ones, yellow etc. Is there any way for me to know are these going to be bush beans or pole beans? I would like to grow them on my balcony (to cover my wall) and I don't have much space. I would prefer pole or climbing beans, I don't have space for bush varieties. Would I be able to tell the difference when they grow into seedlings?
