What to do about our long-covered hardwood floors?

Mrs. Lattiboy and I just purchased a house. The previous owner has had the hardwood floors carpeted in 1986. We're getting rid of the carpet and would like advice on what to do to restore them without breaking the bank or breaking my back. [more inside]

Cleaning cat pee from small apartment

Best Cat Ever lost a cancer fight recently. In his last couple of months, he was regularly urinating and sometimes defecating on various parts of my floor. (He had struggled with serious constipation at times, so when this happened, it was enough of an exciting development that I didn't really attempt to stop him.) I did my best with enzyme cleaners, but I wasn't able to keep up with it, and now the whole apartment stinks. What do I do? [more inside]

rough / abraded upholstery after professional cleaning - is this normal?

We just had our couch, ottoman and thick, dense rug professionally cleaned. Now the couch and ottoman have a rough, crusty texture that the carpet guy said "will go away with use" - but they're pretty unpleasant to sit on right now. Both couch and rug look aged - like they were scraped pretty harshly. Is this normal? I was hoping having them cleaned would lengthen their lives, not shorten them. If not, what should I look out for to select a better cleaner next time? This outfit had pretty good yelp reviews. [more inside]

How best to clean the carpet nearest my baseboards?

Landlord does not want tenant to have the carpets professionally cleaned

She is willing to pay for it. We (her friends, who are staging an intervention of sorts) feel landlord is being ridiculous. I'm asking on her behalf because 1) I'm taking this sooo personally because I don't think the situation is fair; This to me is no longer about a mouse, it's about a control freak landlord, but anyway. and 2) I also don't think it can wait for her to sign up on AskMeFi and wait the one week it takes for her to ask it herself. Way forward? [more inside]

Heavy carpet cleaning chemical exposure in pregnancy

Pregnant, first trimester. My office is having all the carpets, chairs, and upholstery cleaned. What is this strange phenomenon?

What is this strange phenomenon happening with ostensibly house trained dogs soiling the house? I just threw out three area rugs that my 4 yr. old Beagle has ruined by pooing and peeing on them, even to the point of blackening the hardwood floor beneath. The very FIRST thing my son's dog does when she visits is crap and pee right in front of us! No shame.... [more inside]

It's not really white anymore.

Too many pets and perplexing white carpet. Help? Mrs. LT and I live with our brood (4 cats, 1 dog) in an apartment that has . . . wait for it . . . white carpet. We didn't think about this when we moved in, but now the carpet's filthy, and we're trying to figure out a way to save it/our deposit, because otherwise we'll need to move when our lease is up before it gets any worse. Ugh, what can we do? [more inside]

Renting in New Zealand - Pets urine on carpet. Smells. Pet hair

I'm currently renting a flat unit in New Zealand which I will be moving out next month. My current rental agreement states that I do not need to have the carpet professionally cleaned before I move out. I have two cats in the house and the question was raised with the property agent before I moved in. They have agreed to let me have the pets in the house and on the rental agreement, it also states that they are okay with it. [more inside]

Smells like team spirit -- or worse!

I live in a place that is rainy or snowy half the year, and during that half it is impossible to keep the floor of my car dry. It has begun to smell pretty bad. I recently had the interior detailed, which included washing the floor mats, and it smelt fine until the floor got wet again, which was almost immediately. Does anyone have a good technique for keeping wet carpet from smelling bad? Drying it is not an option. For bonus points, exactly what is it that causes the smell?

Shoes pick up pet hair from carpets

Here's a long-shot: About 20 years ago I bought a pair of custom-made mountain-man-ish/mocassin-style boots that I had fitted at a crafts fair in San Diego. They were moose-hide, awful-looking things with metal buttons, and came with a weird flat, textured rubber sole material that the maker said was actually conveyor belting that he cut to fit the boots. The boots were happily but a passing fancy, but the soling stuck in my memory: It was the best damn pet-hair catching substance in my known Universe... WHERE can I find some more? Attached to a stick, it'd make a smashing carpet brush.
