Landscaper Needed

Landscaping Service in Cincinnati. Our yard is the ugliest on the street. Need recommendations of a reliable, fair-priced landscaping person or service in Cincinnati. We live in Northside. Our yard is very shady. Grass doesn't grow, but weeds do! It's not a large front yard, but has a slope to it. We would like to have a small brick wall built to terrace the yard. Then we want a non-grass yard - either ground cover or plants and perennials with low maintenance.

Any recommendations before I try the Yellow Pages?

Is there any reason this Amtrak trip won't work?

This summer I'd like to take the Amtrak from Cincinnati, OH to Holland, MI, by way of Chicago, and I'd like to take my bike. Help me figure this out. Probably some time in July, I'd like to visit from friends in Holland, MI. Partially because of the price of gas, partially because I'm familiar with Holland and I know it's bikeable, and partly because, uh, I think it'd be kind of fun to take a train, I'd like to take the Amtrak, and bring my bike.

A search for train schedules on the Amtrak website shows that the train would probably leave Cincinnati about 1:10am, get into Chicago at 10:35am, leave Chicago again at 5:45pm (bonus! 7 hours of free time in Chicago!), and get into Holland at 5:45pm. Essentially reverse and repeat on the way back, with the train leaving Holland at 8:20am and getting into Cincinnati at 3:17am.

I guess I'm sort of trying to figure out if this is feasible/if there's any reason this would be a really bad idea, assuming: a) while I've been on a train before, I'm not an experienced train traveler, and b) I'm a 5'2" 21 year old female.

But I mean, I can take care of myself. I guess my concerns more specifically are:

1) How difficult will it be for me to get the bike on and off the train (yes, I've seen this on the Amtrak site.)

2) Surely there's somewhere at Union Station in Chicago I can check a bike for 7 hours, right? Will that be complicated/expensive?

3) Ought I be concerned at all about boarding/leaving the Amtrak at 1:00am or 3:00am? I guess I'm asking about the general sketchiness of Amtrak stations, especially really late at night.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks Askmefites!

Driving routes from Cincinnati to Ann Arbor?

Please tell me about your experience driving the main or alternate routes from Cincinnati, OH to Ann Arbor, MI. Google Maps gives the main route as primarily on I-75, and says it takes 4 hours, but a friend of mine said it takes more like 6 hours and encounters big traffic jams in Dayton and Toledo. If I check "avoid highways", Google gives me a route that goes up the western side of the state, primarily on route 127, and it says that takes 6 hours. If the alternate route is a pretty drive, I'd be happy to take it. If you've driven from Cincy to Ann Arbor yourself, please tell me what you know about this or any other routes, and which you would recommend. Time is not so much the issue, I'd just like to have a nice non-frustrating drive.

A Few Of Your Favorite Things In Northern Kentucky

Moving to Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky: help me find what I like! I'm very excited to report that I'll be moving to Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky very soon. I'll likely be living within 10 minutes of the river on the Kentucky side, so bonus points for answers involving NKY, especially within bicycling distance!

I've scoured the normal channels of information to find what I like (web, city papers, entertainment weeklies), and have found lots. But, as we know, the hive can relate the "whys" like no other resource.

Here's a list of what I like. Tell me whether these exist in or near NKY, YOUR favorite one(s), and why:

Independent Bookstores (especially those that carry zines)
Record Stores (I've visited Shake It!, and it kicks ass!)
Artists' Supply
Independent Coffee Shops
Bicycle Paths
Dog Parks
Organic Grocery Stores / Food Co-ops
Asian, Hispanic, or Middle Eastern Grocery Stores
Thrift Stores
Farmers' Markets
Fresh Meat Markets (heard about Findlay market; anything in NKY?)
Old Pubs, with lots of wood, dark lighting, and good beer prices
Independent Movie Theaters
Restaurants With Killer Specials (like the 99c taco night I found in Ft. Thomas)
Skateboard Parks
Bike Shops, with great repair/tuneup staff
Music Stores (that sell guitars, not CDs)
Small Bars Where Old Black Guys Play Jazz

As always, thanks!

What other cities (worldwide) have installed subway systems long after being "established?" A year or so ago, I visited Boston and was blown away by the convenience and affordability of the T. As a native of the Cincinnati area, I was shocked to discover this MetaFilter thread about it's abandoned subway I had never heard about. What would it take to finish the system in Cincy (besides wads of cash, of course)?

Maybe someday when I'm fabulously wealthy, I'll spearhead a project!

Please tell me about Cincinnati

Cincinnati residents, help me find a place to (possibly) live. I've searched for Cincinnati posts and the last one that was similar to this is a little old and not exactly the same so I'm posting this question. I'm originally from the suburbs of Detroit near Ann Arbor. I've been living in Tokyo for 7 years with a short 6 month period in Chicago. I may be getting a new job in the Cincinnati area and was hoping for some insight on the various neighborhoods.

For anybody that is familiar Detroit, I really like the Ferndale/Royal Oak and Ann Arbor Area. When living in Chicago I was in Rogers Park and enjoyed that area as well. If I could have lived anywhere in Chicago, it probably would have been in Lincoln Park or Bucktown area but I just couldn't afford it at the time.

I've done my best to search for info about the atmosphere of the neighborhoods of Cincinnati, but I was hoping a Cinci MeFite could give give me some of their opinions on their area, or help me get a feel for which areas I may want to look at for housing. Northern Kentucky area is also good. Thanks!

Cincitucky Bound

CincyFilter: Help me find a guide to Cincinnati's neighborhoods that actually acknowledge Kentucky's existence as part of the metro area. We're thinking of buying a house in Cincinnati, and want to check out its various neighborhoods. Problem is, the few "guides" I found are thinly-veiled real estate company sites that describe every neighborhood in glowing (i.e., unrealistic) terms.

To top it off, we'll most likely live on the Kentucky side of Cincinnati (though we'd certainly consider Ohio), but none of the sites I've found include the Kentucky side (Covington, Newport, etc.) in their discussions. Being an Ohio native who has visited Cincy several times, I know that contrary to local belief, it's all the same metro area, but you'd never know it from the info I've found so far.

This page (for Milwaukee) is exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. We'll most likely check out the neighborhoods that sound good, compare housing prices and a few other factors, and decide from there. So, guides that describe the neighborhoods in terms of what it's like to live there (as opposed to visit there) would be ideal.

Getaways near Cincinnati?

Nice weekend places near or within 2 hrs' drive of Cincinnati OH, for small group getaway? Trying to find a place where a group of thirtysomething friends can go for a relaxing weekend. There will be 4 to 6 of us, maybe with a couple of babies. Could be a rent-a-cabin/cottage deal, maybe a b+b, maybe even a hotel in a town.

Idyllic quiet setting preferred, but all recommendations welcome - including in Cincy itself. (I don't know the town; we're arranging an easy, peaceful weekend getaway for someone who lives there and is stressed out.)

Commuting from NYC to Berea, KY

NYC to Berea, Kentucky. Best ways to travel back and forth, about 6 roundtrips over the course of 3 months? Low cost is very important, but not quite so important that I could stomach the 19-hour Greyhound ride every time. Can't find any budget airlines that go NYC-Lexington. Some cheap flights BWI-LEX and some NYC-Dayton -- maybe those are my best choice even with the added time/cost on bus legs? Finally, anybody know approx. taxi cost Lex-Berea (for times when Greyhound schedule doesn't fit with my plane)? Thanks!

Cincinnati

When you think of Cincinnati, what do you think? A friend of mine is visiting for a couple days. I didn't grow up here, but I'm here at the moment. So I said I'd give her the tour, but I'm not sure what to miss/not miss. There's a river. There's the ghetto. There's some malls. There's lots of chili parlors. There's gambling in Indiana. There's a deer farm somewhere on the west side. And midget town, I forgot about that. I figure we'll get something to eat and just drive around while the sun is up. What I'm asking is, having never been here, what's the quick impression you have of this town and what would you expect/not expect to find here? Or, less generally, what if anything, do you imagine you would like to see/do if you were here? I have some ideas, but comparison with a random sample will help.

Moving back to the greater Cincinnati area temporarily. What's changed in the last 10 years? I find it hard to believe it's been 10 years since I left 'conservative-ville' for hell, (with stops in VT, TX and CO along the way) I guess what I'd like to know is, has anything changed? (Other than the cut in the hill) I have been back to visit, but not long enough to really re-explore.
