we live in the woods in northern california and want to decorate a large pine tree for christmas which currently lives about 15 feet from our front door. it will be staying where it is; we want to add some natural-ish decorations which could maybe feed the several species of birds that live around us. how festive. however, this being the country, we also have wood rats aplenty. the last thing i want to see on christmas morning is our tree filled with rats. is there a way to feed the birds without encouraging rats? or should we just dress the rats as soldiers and recreate the nutcracker suite in our front yard?
I'm wondering if someone could point me in the direction of a DIY miniature christmas tree? Needs to fit in a carry-on bag. No bigger than a can of soup. Not real. [more inside]
Looking for a decent artificial Christmas tree on a bit of a budget. Do you have one that you really love? Tell me about it! I have been internet-searching these all morning but I can't really tell from the photos how they look, so I came to Metafilter for personal recommendations. (Alternately: tell me your tricks for making fake trees look less sad and fake!) [more inside]
4 months ago, we inherited an artificial Christmas tree from smokers. I kept the tree in the box until yesterday, so I lost out on an opportunity to air it out. What's your best trick for getting rid of the cigarette smoke smell (really get rid of it and not just mask the odor)? It's the kind where you stick the individual branches into the holes on the center pole.
After lots of burnt out strings and fadded bulbs last year, the time has come to replace the Christmas lights for my tree; which ones should I buy? I am CRAZY about lights. It's my family's tradition to put so many on, the tree glows like a small star. Think 4000 bulbs on a 5 1/2' tree. This is serious business. Requirements inside. [more inside]
We have very high ceilings in our apartment and can get a tall tree, but we would like to avoid renting a truck and I don't think any of our nearby friends have the type of vehicle that would be better. If we must, we will further investigate those options or delivery or whatever, but first I want to rule out using my own car. I've never transported anything on my own roof and I have no rack but I know trees get home this way all the time. I'm happy to go nuts tying it down as long as we're being safe. I know there's a weight limit listed for my car. What's the practical/legal length limit and what is it based on (roof, car length)?

[Plant Filter] How do I care for my new dwarf conifer, a Lawson Cypress also known as "Treasure Island"? I purchased him from my local nursery two days ago, where they were selling small "living Christmas trees" as novelties. It is a very lovely little tree, and I would actually like to keep it potted inside if possible, but I'm not sure if it will be too warm for this species. [more inside]

We've gone and done it. My partner and I bought a beautiful tree for our apartment. We've decked it to the nines, he's used his chaos magic to cast spells preventing the darling cat from disemboweling our holiday house-guest...but something's not quite right. Our tree has no topper! We've looked for inspiration here, here, and even here, but we're still stumped. [more inside]

When I lived in the Philippines, we had a Christmas tree assembled out of bamboo. Every year I search online for a source for these, but this year, as previously, I've come up empty. Does anyone know who sells them? It was my understanding at the time that they were very common (there), but now all trace of them seems to have vanished.
Christmas trees. Real or artificial? Or rather is it worth paying a high price for an artificial tree that looks very real rather than a relatively low price a real tree that looks, well, real?
