My boyfriend is having some coworkers over tomorrow night for a little get-together/party thing. This isn't their official christmas party (they had that at work last night), just a few (6-7 or so people) getting together. When asked about what he's doing for food, my boyfriend just assumed they'd all just go to the grocery store to get something, which I personally find pretty... weird. As I'm helping host, I want to provide better noms! [more inside]
I'm a 40 year old man, recently single and spending Christmas with my parents for the first time in two decades. They're excited, help us have a good one. [more inside]
For various reasons including pets with no available sitter and a few failed plans, I have my first Christmas Day in NYC by myself. I don't feel particularly sad about this, but it might be weird to wake up in the morning with nothing to do. Fun and meaningful activities? [more inside]
I need to get a Christmas present for my mom (I KNOW HOW LITTLE TIME THERE IS LEFT, THANK YOU!). I'd really like it to be related to our recent trip to Spain, ideally somehow either to the flamenco dancer Adrian Sanchez or to the Cortylandia display in Madrid. Any ideas welcome! [more inside]
It's my turn to come up with a surprise advent activity, and I'm running out of steam! Help me find a short, seasonally-appropriate thing to do with my fiance. [more inside]
My parents, both in their 60s, have recently gone "mostly-vegan" for health reasons. I'd like to get them some Christmas gifts that support this decision (and their overall commitment to more healthy eating). I've already gotten them some kelp noodles (they loved them at a vegan restaurant we went to). Other thoughts about basics/add-ons/general useful and inspiring stuff for a couple of vegan noobies? Vegetarians of MeFi! What are you having for Christmas dinner? I am totally capable with vegetarian dishes in general, but most of them are rather light and don't seem substantial enough to be a Christmas dinner. So what are you having? [more inside]
My brother is going to depart for Brisbane (the one that isn't near San Francisco) to do a postdoc in invertebrate biology about 15 minutes after Christmas and is pretty much taking everything he's going to take as check luggage. While the $100 note has that cool Lyrebird graphic and is easy to pack, it seems somewhat unimaginative. [more inside]
The #1 item on my eight year-old son's Christmas list is "AN ACTUAL PENGUIN". Please help me creatively accommodate his request without violating the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. [more inside]
I need help finding a Christmas gift for my dad. I'm looking for: - Something that requires occasional hands on -- a project, but not a full-time project - Something a little science-projecty and geeky, but that does not involve a computer (he's 72 and not terribly computer literate; he does have an iPad, though) - Something that has a definable end result - Something he can attend to while my folks spend three months in their RV this winter - Most likely something plant-related More... I'm trying to grant a Christmas wish for my sweetheart. Shh! Don't tell! [more inside]
Say you're a hip and adorable lesbian- what snowboots would you buy? I'm trying to buy my partner a pair of snowboots for Xmas and want to find some really cute, stylish ones but am coming up short. We're in the Rockies. I just buy utilitarian boots, so I am bad at this. [more inside]
For Christmas my family is hosting two teenagers (~12 yrs old) from Kazakhstan. They are in town for a hockey tournament, and the place where the team is staying is closing for the nights of the 24th and 25th, so we are taking them on while other families take other members of the team. Help us make them feel welcome while being so far away from home! [more inside]
NYC-ers: Where have you eaten dinner on Christmas Day that's awesome? Caveats: $30/person max, coming from UWS and we have a show in the Hell's Kitchen area (50th and 8th) at 8pm... [more inside]
I am trying to find a good, actually any version, of Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer, with 'callback' or 'kid's addition' lyrics. For example, "They never let poor Rudolph (Rudolph)/ Join in any reindeer games (like Monopoly)". I have searched, unsuccessfully, on iTunes and Google Play, for such a version. Any recommendations? I am sure there are plenty out there but I'm just not finding any.
We are doing secret Santa exchange at work in which everyday we leave a small gift for the recipient. I want to make all my little gifts tie together using a poem. Halp? [more inside]
Another gift-question, but I didn't find anything in the archives that's exactly applicable, so here goes: I'm looking for a Christmas gift for my 11-year-old cousin. He's pretty into science and math, and according to my aunt, already has tons of toys/games/kits. So it seems like she would prefer for him not to get another one of those, but her only other suggestion was to give him "coupons" to play card/board games with me. I'd be happy to do that except frankly I'm not sure he'd actually appreciate it - fwiw we rarely see each other, and I'm ten years older and female. I'm thinking a good book might be nice, but I don't know exactly what he's already read and liked, other than the typical series like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Diary of a Wimpy Kid etc. Any suggestions - either lesser-known books or other options I might not have thought of? My max price range is probably $25-30 but I can be a little flexible.

My family and I will soon be embarking on a trip to Spain. We'll be in Seville the 19th-27th, Cordoba for a couple of days after that, and Granada until January 2nd. What's cool stuff to do in these places (we've already got Alhambra tickets), or very nearby? Is there anything associated with the current winter festivities to do? Any good restaurant recommendations?
We're having a vegetarian Christmas. I love a good nut roast. There's only going to be three of us, and no one to freak out over vegetarian clichés. So I'm looking for a scene stealing nut roast recipe to be the main attraction. [more inside]

Are there Christmas/holiday films or TV specials that star non-white protagonists? I was watching a holiday ad for The Criterion Collection on Hulu and was nonplussed at how white the casts are for all the classic holiday films. I mean, I have a soft spot for Home Alone as a child of the Chicago suburbs, but I'd love to show nieces and nephews and cousins more than whitebread suburban holiday cheer. Are there Christmas films featuring people of color (foreign or American) you would recommend? And if foreign, hopefully subtitled? I can poke around for Korean films, but am otherwise linguistically stuck with the English language.

Ayo- My four-year-old niece thinks Superman is pretty bitchin', and I'm thinking about maybe getting her Superman-related toys for Xmas. Are there any good Superman toys for someone her age that might be educational? Failing Educational, what about Superman toys that are just rad beyond belief?

So, after decades of basically ignoring them, I'm finally getting into the spirit of enjoying classic Christmas songs. But I don't know much about them. I know many of them have been covered literally hundreds of times. As a starting point, I'd like to better understand which versions of popular Christmas songs have been MOST popular over time. Where in NYC can I order a printing of 250 photo cards with the quickest turnaround? I'm talking like 24-48 hours. Can pay $$$. [more inside]
I really like holiday gift guides, which combine the illusion of thoughtful shopping with the ruthless efficiency of the internet. It's easy to find guides from popular websites and publications, but surely there are more and weirder out there on the web. What is your favorite 2013 gift guide? What are the most interesting gift guides from blogs and niche publications? [more inside]
I'm looking for a fun gift for my mom, specifically one that she'd be excited to play with on Christmas morning. You know how when you were a kid there was always that one present you couldn't WAIT to play with? That's what I'm looking for. My mom is 52, likes puzzles and games (we were a big board game family growing up), is not tech-savvy at all but does have a Nintendo DS. I'll probably get a game or two for her but I'm wondering if anyone has any other neat suggestions. [more inside]
What should I get for my 12 year old boy who loves Minecraft and KSP? [more inside]
A friend and I live in Newark and Kearny, NJ, respectively, and go to school in Madison. We're both dating Brits who are captivated by the (relatively mundane) Christmas lights displays we've seen just driving around so far. Where's somewhere nearby we can go where we can show them ridiculously tacky Christmas lights, ideally set to music or something equally ridiculous? I've found mention of a house in Morristown online but was wondering if there was anything else, or any neighborhoods that tend to all go all out.
My husband, who grew up with Lionel trains, would like to get a new set for the holidays. We have a 1 bedroom apartment, so we're not doing an entire set up. We have no kids, so it doesn't have to be Thomas, but I'm at a loss between O-Gauge and G-Gauge and all the different options! Does anyone have advice? [more inside]

My mom, who recently sold her home and moved into senior housing, has expressed interest in owning some sort of computing device. Need more Christmas music. Too busy to list what I already have, so just list whatever CD is your favorite. I like everything--every genre imaginable, except rap. Thanks!
My mother and I have planned a somewhat last-minute trip to Scotland and we just discovered the Carols at the Castle event at Stirling Castle on the 15th. It is, of course, wildly popular and already sold out. Where might an enterprising couple of ladies manage to find tickets from those who have purchased them but no longer want/can use them? In the US I'd look on Craigslist for something like this, but that doesn't seem to be a popular option here in the UK. Gumtree hasn't given me anything either. Any way for us to track them down, or is it a sadly lost cause?
My wife and I usually visit our families on the east coast for Christmas. This year, however, my wife will be 35 weeks pregnant, so we're staying home in San Francisco. We'd like to find some festive Christmas events in San Francisco to entertain us that are local and compatible with being pregnant (so Santacon is probably out). Bonus points for events that are uniquely San Franciscan.
I need to make some purchases online for Christmas - but I don't want the items to show up on the sidebar. We're a one computer family and my 16 year old daughter will easily figure out what Santa's bringing. I know there's a way to surf and purchase covertly, but when I Google "shop online secretly" and other such phrases, I don't find what I'm looking for.
I'm looking for an innovative alternative to sending out Xmas cards to clients. [more inside]

My family Christmas lunch has blown out from the usual 15 people to at least 27 and my original plan to roast a whole sirloin in the Webber isn't going to cut it. Every year, each of my (8 or so, all adult) family members buys the same small gift for the rest of us and gives the gift anonymously (and to themselves, to preserve anonymity). With Christmas a month away, what silly or useful stocking stuffers can I give out to each of my family members across a wide variety of ages? [more inside]
Is there a retail chain that carries Jelly Belly Sour Santas candy? I found them online but I'd like to avoid paying shipping. I'm in the Kansas City area, if anybody happens to know a local source.
Cooking is probably my main hobby these days. And, as a late-thirties professional, I have a fully outfitted kitchen. I'm being asked for gift ideas for Christmas, and I think I'll probably limit myself to 1) whisky and 2) stuff for the kitchen. Fellow advanced home cooks with fully stocked kitchens, what's on your wishlist this holiday season? Not looking for gimmicky stuff; rather something I'd actually use for years to come. [more inside]

So, a few weeks ago we were in Freeport, Maine and saw a giant whoopie pie, which we knew immediately would be the perfect Chrismas gift for my youngest brother. Then, tonight, my wife found a giant Rice Krispie Treat, which she bought as a Christmas gift for my middle brother. So now we have A Theme for amusing consumables for the rest of the family. But now we need to come up with some other Abnormally Large Food Items for 5-6 other family members. Help me find them. [more inside]
