My direct manager is having an open house / work-related party tonight (the 30th) and he has invited me and most of the department. We are planning on bringing a small 'host' gift, i.e. flowers or chocolates. Since it is so close to Christmas my wife thinks that we should also bring a small gift for each of my manager's two children (~6 and ~2 years old). I'm unsure whether this would be seen as 'sucking up' or if this is a good idea. [more inside]
For Christmas, I decided to set up a 529 college savings account for my 7 month-old nephew. My sister and her husband flipped out, saying I am trying to use their child for tax deductions. I don't understand what I did wrong. Insight please? [more inside]
In true sitcom-character form, I've gotten myself in a situation. I promised weird and exciting Christmas presents for work people by accident. I was half-bluffing half-joking, but now it has been taken seriously, and I didn't kill it soon enough, so now it is too late. And I need to deliver. By tomorrow. [more inside]
THE SITUATION: One of my good friends loves foxes. "Obsessed" is a strong word, but... she is deeply enamored. Fox socks, fox backpack, fox everything. [more inside]
I am looking to get a poem printed on canvas.... before Christmas. I am in Manhattan, NYC. Does anyone know of either a place locally or somewhere online with rush shipping that I can get this done?
Another Christmas gift question! My older brother loves to BBQ – and since we live in the Southwest, it’s grilling season. Last year I gave him a box of spices from Penzey’s, so this year I’d like to give him a nice set of BBQ sauces. [more inside]
Where can I find a classic, professor-style tweed blazer... cut for a woman? (Serious bonus points: before Christmas??) [more inside]
My dad put together a not-really-serious Christmas list which includes items such as "world peace" as well as a few other clever things. This year I'd like to give multiple charitable donations in his name targeted to the causes/issues he touches on in his list. Help me select a few organizations. [more inside]
At my workplace, there are 6 people on my team along with 2 leaders who we all report to. Collectively, we bought group gifts for both leaders. I had been planning to get a small gift (a few jars of homemade jam) for each of the people I work with (both leaders and my co-workers) and I had been thinking of doing this since before we decided to get a group gift for our leaders. I'm wondering if it's somehow inappropriate or weird to be getting my leaders a gift on top of the group gifts that I already contributed to? But then, the alternative of just getting my co-workers, but not my leaders a gift seems awkward too. I suspect I'm overthinking this, but I feel like I don't have a good sense of what the right thing to do here is.
My impossible-to-shop-for mother has gotten into beading this year. I know absolutely nothing about beading except that involves beads. What are some good gifts for a beading person -- things that she might not buy for herself? [more inside]
Inspired by this thread, I'd like to go all out wrapping Christmas gifts for my wife this year. What ideas, concepts, methods, etc. have you used in the past, or seen online that are sure to impress? [more inside]
My family is taking a trip to Lisbon in May! We are very excited. What present can I get my mother to make this trip even better for her? Looking especially for specific tours or tickets although other ideas will be considered. [more inside]
I've looked through the archives, and all the usual websites, but I'm not finding what I'm looking for, and was hoping someone might have the perfect Idea - She's 26, my employee, and has taste that I don't have...
Assume first that it's appropriate for our particular relationship. I got her something last year--sort of a small $15 Christmas-themed funny sign thing that was connected to something we talked about one time. But this year I can't think of a single thing. Which may mean I shouldn't get her anything, but I'd still be grateful for any ideas you have. Thank you!
My sister is colossally hard to buy for and Christmas is swiftly approaching. She is insanely busy at her job (that she doesn't like) and doesn't have much time for interests or hobbies that I am aware of. The only thing I know she has been doing and enjoying is making quilts. Help me turn this is to a great christmas present. [more inside]

There's several people I know that are big into gaming, (The Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, etc). They also like to read. In the interest of getting them something gaming related, is there a book or several books that function both as a piece of fiction and as a game? Not sure this sort of thing even exists, but figured if it does that would be pretty awesome as Christmas gift. Anyone?

I want to get my Glaswegian girlfriend a Charles Rennie Mackintosh print for Christmas. Extensive Googling keeps bringing up the same type of result: massive print-houses like AllPosters. Maybe this is the best route? I don't know, but they all seem very cheap and what I want is something well produced and worth framing. What advice can the HiveMind offer? [more inside]
I know there are hundreds of these, but none that address my rather geeky, very special seattle snowflake of a boyfriend. Details below. [more inside]

Due to family tragedy, last Christmas felt more like a never-ending marathon than a fun and meaningful holiday. I resolved that Christmas 2014 would be a more mellow, loving holiday that didn't involve hundreds of dollars flushed down the drain on disposable gifts. What are your ideas for meaningful Christmas gifts for family that take some time to make (or not!), don't cost much and might be actually appreciated and used? [more inside]
My brother is going to depart for Brisbane (the one that isn't near San Francisco) to do a postdoc in invertebrate biology about 15 minutes after Christmas and is pretty much taking everything he's going to take as check luggage. While the $100 note has that cool Lyrebird graphic and is easy to pack, it seems somewhat unimaginative. [more inside]
The #1 item on my eight year-old son's Christmas list is "AN ACTUAL PENGUIN". Please help me creatively accommodate his request without violating the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. [more inside]
I need help finding a Christmas gift for my dad. I'm looking for: - Something that requires occasional hands on -- a project, but not a full-time project - Something a little science-projecty and geeky, but that does not involve a computer (he's 72 and not terribly computer literate; he does have an iPad, though) - Something that has a definable end result - Something he can attend to while my folks spend three months in their RV this winter - Most likely something plant-related More... Another gift-question, but I didn't find anything in the archives that's exactly applicable, so here goes: I'm looking for a Christmas gift for my 11-year-old cousin. He's pretty into science and math, and according to my aunt, already has tons of toys/games/kits. So it seems like she would prefer for him not to get another one of those, but her only other suggestion was to give him "coupons" to play card/board games with me. I'd be happy to do that except frankly I'm not sure he'd actually appreciate it - fwiw we rarely see each other, and I'm ten years older and female. I'm thinking a good book might be nice, but I don't know exactly what he's already read and liked, other than the typical series like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Diary of a Wimpy Kid etc. Any suggestions - either lesser-known books or other options I might not have thought of? My max price range is probably $25-30 but I can be a little flexible.
Ayo- My four-year-old niece thinks Superman is pretty bitchin', and I'm thinking about maybe getting her Superman-related toys for Xmas. Are there any good Superman toys for someone her age that might be educational? Failing Educational, what about Superman toys that are just rad beyond belief?
I really like holiday gift guides, which combine the illusion of thoughtful shopping with the ruthless efficiency of the internet. It's easy to find guides from popular websites and publications, but surely there are more and weirder out there on the web. What is your favorite 2013 gift guide? What are the most interesting gift guides from blogs and niche publications? [more inside]
My mom, who recently sold her home and moved into senior housing, has expressed interest in owning some sort of computing device. She's basically computer illiterate, has never been on the internet, and has trouble using my TV remote control sometimes. Am I crazy to even consider getting her an iPad? [more inside]
Every year, each of my (8 or so, all adult) family members buys the same small gift for the rest of us and gives the gift anonymously (and to themselves, to preserve anonymity). With Christmas a month away, what silly or useful stocking stuffers can I give out to each of my family members across a wide variety of ages? [more inside]

For Christmas, I'd like to purchase digital photo frames for family members that would allow me to update the photos wirelessly. The reviews for several of the digital wi-fi frames are awful on Amazon. Do you have any recommendations for digital photo frames that specifically come with wi-fi? Or another digital photo frame that would be easy enough for non-tech-savvy people to use? Thank you.
I pride myself on being the best gift giver ever and I think I have nailed the idea for my Secret Santa this year, a Wholefoods Cookbook with accompanying produce. The thing is, I don't really know what wholefoods are, and the book is a week or 2 away (being sent from OS). I need this gift in the post around mid November so want to start my shopping for the produce now. Please help me, what kinds of awesome things can I put in the hamper? It can be snacks and grocery type things for cooking. Nothing that needs to be refrigerated. Im thinking dried beans, wholemeal pasta, that kind of thing. The book is 'Cooking with Wholefoods: A guide to healthy natural ingredients, and how to use them with 100 delicious recipes... by Nicola Graimes.' Thank you.
