Christmas Sights and Doin's in Boston

My family will be joining me in the Boston area for Christmas this year, for the first time, for only a few days surrounding the 25th. If we were in NYC, near where I grew up, I'd know exactly what to do - see the windows, Rockefeller Ctr, St. Patrick's, the Grand Central train show...but I don't know what the Boston equivalents of these sightseeing traditions are. One caveat: Boston seems big on performing arts events for the holidays, and we probably aren't going to be able to coordinate schedules for ticketed events. I'm looking for things you can just drop in to. [more inside]

Christmas fake leaded glass window

Yeas ago at Christmas I used to paint black lines on a window to create a Dickensian diamond pane leaded glass look. I remember the clean up~being very messy. Is there a black tape that would do the job while not leaving a lot of residue behind on the window?

Movie where meat was the gift

I remember one scene from a movie -- but what movie is it? A boy is sitting on the floor watching TV. We know that the kid's dad is a butcher. The boy is thinking about what he wants for Christmas (there's a narrator) -- typical toys. The Dad walks in with a large package wrapped in white paper and throws it on the floor and says "Hey kid, Merry Christmas" in a totally flat tone. We know the package is a side of beef or something like that, but I can't remember how we know that. [more inside]

Best $50 gift for someone who loves camping?

In my family secret santa exchange, I have been chosen to buy a gift for my sister who is a 31-year old lawyer, married with no children. She loves to go tent camping with her husband, usually at drive-in (rather than hike-in) camp sites. I would like to get her a camping-related gift that is awesome but which she is unlikely to already own. [more inside]

Skip the cloves, please.

I recently heard that there are new procedures to break up scar tissue that are akin to scoring the surface of a ham, i.e. cross-hatched for max flexibility. I've had an immovable band of scar tissue around my elbow for 15 years that prevents my arm from extending fully, and I'd like to look into this procedure. My google-fu is weak (no, I DON'T need another search result for the Chili Peppers song) -- do you know what it's being called by doctors? Thank you!

Hip, Hip Hooray, for Christmas Vacation

Our family rarely takes vacations, and even then, just to visit family, or at best, to a nearby lake. But big leaps forward in our careers have us thinking it's time to finally treat ourselves. Help Me Gift Myself

I escaped a long-term abusive marriage homeless with a lot of hermit like attributes. It's been about three years of clawing and crawling out of that hole, and while I'm not completely out, I do have an apartment, job, friends, and enough money to feed me and my kid three squares a day. That deserves a celebration and I'm determined that I'm going to spend a long weekend with my best friend in London in December as a combo birthday/holiday gift to myself. I want to see Hyde Park done up for the holidays, do a Jack the Ripper tour, eat in a pub, and visit a museum [more inside]

Gift etiquette: Boss's children, holiday edition

My direct manager is having an open house / work-related party tonight (the 30th) and he has invited me and most of the department. We are planning on bringing a small 'host' gift, i.e. flowers or chocolates. Since it is so close to Christmas my wife thinks that we should also bring a small gift for each of my manager's two children (~6 and ~2 years old). Restaurants in NYC open on Christmas + Food Allergies

Hi! Looking for two restaurants that are open on Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day. I'd like one or both of these restaurants to be somewhat upscale. They should be able to accommodate vegetarian + no dairy + no shellfish + no fish. At more expensive places they're usually very helpful and willing to prepare me something off-menu, but I'm having some trouble narrowing down the field. Brooklyn ideal, Manhattan okay, Queens is probably pushing it. [more inside]

What should the future with my ex look like?

My husband cheated on me and left me after nearly two decades of a wonderful, loving, respectful marriage. The betrayal came out of nowhere, and involved emotional and on occasion physical abuse. I can't just go no contact, because we've got a daughter, we're financially entangled, and we will be for years. I am having trouble forging a new, post-marriage relationship with him because I'm deeply hurt, raw, angry, sad, and disoriented. I also can't picture what that relationship even looks like. And he has asked to spend all day on Christmas here at the house ... I don't know if I can handle it. [more inside]
