Chinatown (NYC) bus to Foxwoods

Info needed on taking the Chinatown (NYC) bus to Foxwoods. Friends, I will be travelling to the MGM Grand at Foxwoods a few weekends from now and, to get there, I am interested in taking the Chinatown bus from Manhattan. This website lists the beginning points for a few bus lines, but I cannot find any information beyond that. I called Foxwoods and they simply gave me the number for Lucky Star. I have not called Lucky Star yet, but their site does not mention the casino.

Does anyone have any experience with taking a bus from Chinatown to Foxwoods? A schedule and price would be most helpful (as well as any advice for when/where to buy tickets and arrive for departure).

Greyhound from the Port Authority is an option, but if a Chinatown bus is cheaper and quicker (no stops), then I'm compelled to go with the latter.

Blue crabs in the frozen north

Where can a guy find a few bushels of male blue crabs on the cheap in NYC this Sunday? I'm having a crab boil, for which I'm needing some crabs. Last year I went the Chinatown route, which was plenty inexpensive but they were all female, which means less meat per crab. The internet is awash in advice, but never seems to differentiate between sooks and jimmies (and aaaalways ends up recommending Chinatown).

We do have a car for a couple hours, so places I'd have to drive to are fine! I'm in Park Slope, if that matters.

Where can I find information about the history of Chinatown in Washington, D.C.? Called the smallest Chinatown in a major metropolitan U.S. city, the area, once grubby and unsafe, is rapidly being "gentrified" and replaced with mall stores and chain restaurants. I want to find out more about the original ethnic neighborhood before it disappears.

Chinatown bus from Providence to NYC: Does it exist?

Does anyone have any information about a Chinatown bus that goes from Providence to NYC? One time, I was walking down Thayer st. and saw an ad for a $15 bus that left from downtown Providence and went to New York. I took down the phone number on the ad--but I lost it. And the Internet has no knowledge of this bus!

Do any Providence Mefites know about this bus? Does anyone know how I could get a ticket? Thanks!

Hat, hat, where you at?

Need to find very specific type of hat on the INTARWEBS. First seen in San Francisco's Chinatown. Picture follows... I was just in San Francisco and while perusing the imports shops in Chinatown my friend and I stumbled upon these adorable little hats, touted as "children's hats" on the price sign with no more description.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/potassiumiskay/n2912649_31529877_939.jpg

Yes, that's me. They must not have been TOO small, because they did fit my average-sized head nicely. In case it's hard to tell, they're just normal sewn cotton fabric hats with earflaps and ties. The features are embroidery and felt, but the features aren't the focal point of this quest.

I was basically broke at this point in the trip and so I did not buy the hat while I was there, but would really like to buy something similar online for me and my friend. I don't even know where to begin googling for this since I don't know the technical name for this kind of hat.

Additionally, I do live in Chicago 11 out of 12 months of the year, so someplace in our Chinatown to buy these (specific store, please) would also work.

Where to buy blooming tea bags in Manhattan?
Where should we live in Honolulu?

What can you tell me about Honolulu neighborhoods? In January, I posted a question to Ask Metafilter to help my girlfriend and I decide if we were going to move to Honolulu. We've decided to go for it! Now, we're trying to figure out where exactly in Honolulu would be the best place for us to live. The answers to our first question were so helpful that I thought I'd return to Ask Mefi for more advice.

My girlfriend will be working in Upper Manoa, right by the Manoa Marketplace. Ideally, we want to live somewhere that has public transportation that will get her there, although it isn't a make-or-break litmus test. (I will be working from home.)

We're both artsy, urban types. Being within walking distance of lots of interesting things to do would be ideal. Money is, of course, an issue, but we've both lived in Boston so we won't collapse into sobbing hysterics at rents that would be considered insane in many places. Safety is also, of course, an issue, but we're not paranoid about living near other humans.

I liked Chinatown when we briefly visited, and was wondering about it (and the neighborhoods maybe north of it if it turned out to be too expensive right there.) My girlfriend has said she's heard potentially good things about Kaimuki. Can you tell us anything about those, or any other neighborhoods you think we might be interested in? Public transportation, rents, safety, interesting area to be in, anything else?

What's with this knife?

Anything interesting to know about a little chinese knife that has a smaller knife attached to the front of the case? My friend bought this thing in chinatown, in one of the trinket shops. it's a little decorative knife/letter opener, and attached to the front of the case is another case containing a smaller knife. it was $3.

he can't find anything about them online and he was wondering if there's any interesting history surrounding this curious and unique design. not this piece in particular but this piece's ancestors perhaps.

thank you!

Chinatown - would we fit?

Would to non-asians be comfortable in Chinatown? My boyfriend and I would love to move to Chinatown in Boston or Toronto. We love the culture and the atmosphere, but are a little worried about not being asian and living there. In some areas people are harrassed for not being the same ethnicity of those around them - would that happen to us? It doesn't seem likely, but I figured I'd ask here to find out exactly what to expect.

WTF, dragonfruit with a purple interior?

Why was the inside of my dragonfruit purple? I hadn't had a dragonfruit since 1998, in Vietnam, where I consumed them voraciously. There, while the exterior was pink with green-tipped scales, the interior was opaque white, filled with tiny black seeds. I bought a dragonfruit in chinatown in NYC yesterday and was a bit amazed when I cut it open to find a deep purple/fuschia colored fruit. The color came off on my hands and everything else it touched, so my instinct is to think that it was somehow dyed purple (perhaps so that a western consumer wouldn't be freaked out by the incongruity of white fruit in pink skin). Is this the case, or are there perhaps purple dragon fruits out there, or was it overripe or underripe? Should I be worried that whatever dye was used might be toxic? It was also disappointingly bland, so as a follow up question I'd love to know if there's anywhere to get a decent dragonfruit in the states, especially in the NYC area.

nyc walking tour

Can you help me plan a little NYC walking tour? What's the most interesting, scenic, and fun way to walk from Greenwich Village to Chinatown, and what are some places we shouldn't miss? I'm going to be in NYC for the day with friends tomorrow. They've never been there. They want to see GV, SoHo, Little Italy, and Chinatown. I know they're all more or less "in a row", but what streets specifically should we walk along? Where are the best shops and galleries and interesting things to look at in SoHo, and where's the best place to have lunch in Little Italy? A cafe that served great coffee and cannoli would be nice, too. I want to end up at Grand and Bowery in Chinatown to buy durian to take home with me, so assume we're starting somewhere around NYU and want to end up in Chinatown.

Cheap Chinatown

The economics of Chinatown: why is stuff so cheap there? [Your fortune says: more inside!] I'm lucky to live in Toronto, where there are a couple of Chinatowns. I've always wondered why groceries and household goods are so cheap there relative to mainstream outlets. Why does Chinatown seem immune to larger local market forces? I have my own guesses, but I'd really welcome some evidence-based reasoning.

Cheap, fast Chinese food in NYC

NYCFilter: This should be a simple question, where can I get fairly decent, cheap, fast Chinese food in Soho or Chinatown? Details and Midtown analogies inside. I work in Soho, specifically the Puck Building (corner of Houston and Lafayette Streets, a block from Broadway). In the immediate neighborhood all I've really found is a Subway and a passable pizzeria; but, I occasionaly tire of those and I do like Chinese/Japanese food (don't we all?).

My girlfriend works on and off in Midtown, and she's got a plethora of cheap & good Chinese/Japanese food to choose from when she's there--Yoshinoya's, a place that recently closed called Yip's, another place whose name I forget on 38th Street. They all offer your typical compact rice + meat (+ sometimes veggies) meal for approximately $3-6.

However, I haven't yet found any similar places around here, and I'm afraid to wander 10 minutes down to Canal and start trying random Chinese restaurants in Chinatown. Mostly because A) I wouldn't know where to start and B) I'm unsure what the general range of quality is down there.

So I'm hoping someone can suggest places they've been to or heard of that would offer some fairly cheap, fairly decent General Tso's or whatnot, that would be in this general area of Manhattan. Thanks!
