When I was a kid, I was taught a miracle story of a Chinese Christian lady who was saved from a firing squad by a holy light. Later, this actual person visited our school. Were you ever taught any version of this story? Did this lady, whose name I know only as Pearl, visit your church or school? [more inside]
If you knew someone considering doing business with the Chinese Government, how would you convince them of it's moral reprehensiveness as neatly and concisely as possible?
I'm off to Beijing for the Christmas break and want to take my friends out for a big xmas dinner. It's my first time to the city and I'm struggling to find any good guides to food there. Any recommendations for a good slap-up meal on the 25th? I'll be staying around Chao Yang.

I'm looking for professional digital printing services in Beijing similar to this one in Shanghai. I've used the Shanghai service several times for very large prints including gallery mounting and I need a comparable service in Beijing. It's important that the technician speak at least moderate english and that they have a good selection of professional papers and inks. FWIW, I've spoken quickly to a couple of shops at Wukesong in Beijing and haven't been impressed yet.
My (adult) daughter is about to go on a 3-month theatrical tour of China. Not that I have any control over this, but should I be worried about the food additives scandal? She eats prepared/boxed and restaurant food only on these tours. What can she do to protect herself against the crap they allow into their food supply? [more inside]
D...d...dowryfilter? Maybe? I'm getting married to a Chinese woman, very soon, and her rather wealthy parents are asking (hinting, in this face-sensitive culture, so I think that's what it is, but it could mean something else?) where my divorced, broke parents' contribution to the marriage is, or, in lieu of theirs, mine. They've tossed a $140,000 duplex our way, a prime rental property, and a ton of financial support for their daughter. I have about $400 in the bank and an okay freelance career. Barring 10 years to save up and match that...what, exactly, can I do to prevent this from getting really, really, really awkward? A long, rambling explanation follows. [more inside]
This is something of a follow up to this question earlier this year. I've spent most of the last year working in China but haven't moved yet. Question is, Shanghai or Beijing? It's basically my option. I've spent a lot of time in both cities and both have qualities I can appreciate. What are your opinions, which city is more livable, and why.

Looking for images of old Pudong prior to development. Coming up blank. Ideally, from the late 1980s. Plus anything else you stumble across that may be in interesting. Puxi is covered, but finding in hard the other side of the river. Pics will be used in a private seminar on development.
Will be moving to Beijing and would like to have high speed reliable internet service in my apartment. We'll likely be living in one of the US or HK developed apartments along Chao Yang park. I've worked with DSL connections in serviced apartments in Beijing and Shanghai and was not thrilled with the throughput (70kbs) or reliability. The Great Firewall is not an issue as far as completely blocking sites, but I'm sure it affects transfer speeds from the US sites I'd be accessing. [more inside]

What news am I missing at the Olympics - what has been covered up or ignored by the Chinese regulators providing the video feed to NBC etc? I have to imagine there have been some outbursts or protests and the Chinese are not letting the media cover it (at least on live TV). Is there a good site noting these occurrences, or have the games just gone off nearly flawlessly? (excepting the drum tower murder last week.)
Accidental Tourist: It looks like I have 8 days between planes in Shenyang, China in September. Will Beijing still have the cleanest skies it will ever have during my lifetime? Should I instead take the opportunity to see Harbin/Dalian/Dandong/the far NE? Is there somewhere I've forgotten? And how can I get out of Shenyang quick-like? [more inside]
Traveling to China in November. I've seen some of the famous tourist spots (Great Wall, terra cotta soldiers in Xian, gardens in Suzhou, etc.), but I would like to visit some places that are not as well known. Any advice? [more inside]
I am leaving for Beijing in a few days. I am bringing a video camera and plan to interview English-speaking Chinese people on the street. My goal is to edit the footage together into an informative and insightful piece. If you could ask the people of China any question, what would it be?
Which version of Journey to the West should I buy? After seeing Hewlett's production design for Monkey I want to dip into the source material. Digging around I see a fair number of translations but the reviews don't really offer much description beyond "great read." I'm looking for an adaptation/translation that captures most of the original epic for an adult reader, without being an attempt at scholarly word-for-word translation. Ideally, I'd like a dead-tree format that I can take to the coffehouse.

I am trying to plan a 4 week trip back westbound on the Trans Siberian railway. I'm planning to travel through China via Shanghai from Osaka and then take the trans Siberian from Beijing. I'd love some advice on where I should stop over (I'm thinking maybe Mongolia, Irkutsk, Moscow and a stop in Eastern Europe) and what I should try and see and do in these places on my way back to London. Also, I'm on a budget of about $2000 is this enough?. I am arranging it all myself so any general advice/ experience would be very much appreciated.
