TravelFilter: I have 36 hours in Beijing. What should I see (serious amateur photog) and where should I eat (dim-sum preferable.) Bonus: Good hotels with Internet access. Any help or suggestions appreciated!
Look at GoogleMaps over Beijing. About a quarter of the buildings have rooftops that are red or blue. And the color is really strong in comparison to everything else. Has the image been colored, or are they just painted? Either way... Why?
I'm from the United States, and have an expatriation package to work and live in China. Should I be paid in the local currency, RMB, or with the US dollar? The Chinese people are saying I should be paid in RMB because the US dollar is "unstable".... [more inside]

I have a U.S. passport. Same-day and rush processing for Chinese visas in the U.S. has been suspended as of 4 May 2009, likely because of swine flu fears, leaving everyone with a 6-business-day wait. But I leave sooner than that. [more inside]

I'd love to get tips/resources for 1) learning more about the Chinese language and culture for work travel, 2) doing graphic design for a Chinese audience and 3) learning more about working with Chinese writing (this was helpful, for example).* Thoughts? *Bonus points if anyone can tell me if there are any Chinese typefaces I could access that have a particularly whimsical, fun, or child-like feel. After many other ideas have fallen through, I think I'll be going to China about 7 days in May. But it's so big! Inner Mongolia sounds cool; is it worth traveling around Hohhot? I could go surfing in Hainan, but how is the beach compared to Ha Long Bay, or Copacabana, or Playas del Este...? [more inside]
My girlfriend of six years is getting an expat position in Beijing for 2+ years. Her company originally said they would help me find a job, but with the economy going down it seems they are less optimistic about me being able to find a expat position. I like keeping up with the local news and issues where ever I live. It's not been a problem in the US, Europe or A/NZ. Now that I'm close to moving to China after 18 months of business travel in the country, I'm looking for good local news sources and how best to view them. [more inside]
Anybody have recommendations for good historical fiction/nonfiction books set in China or Southeast Asia? [more inside]
Good books about Chinese history during the Three Kingdoms period? I'm getting lost trying to read about it in Wikipedia entries. Something with excellent writing that really captures the scope and complexity like Judt's Postwar does for post-WWII Europe.

I'm a US permanent resident with a Chinese citizenship and my passport expires in July 2009. When I was a kid, I was taught a miracle story of a Chinese Christian lady who was saved from a firing squad by a holy light. Later, this actual person visited our school. I'm off to Beijing for the Christmas break and want to take my friends out for a big xmas dinner. It's my first time to the city and I'm struggling to find any good guides to food there. Any recommendations for a good slap-up meal on the 25th? I'll be staying around Chao Yang.

I'm looking for professional digital printing services in Beijing similar to this one in Shanghai. I've used the Shanghai service several times for very large prints including gallery mounting and I need a comparable service in Beijing. It's important that the technician speak at least moderate english and that they have a good selection of professional papers and inks. FWIW, I've spoken quickly to a couple of shops at Wukesong in Beijing and haven't been impressed yet.
My (adult) daughter is about to go on a 3-month theatrical tour of China. Not that I have any control over this, but should I be worried about the food additives scandal? She eats prepared/boxed and restaurant food only on these tours. What can she do to protect herself against the crap they allow into their food supply? [more inside]
D...d...dowryfilter? Maybe? I'm getting married to a Chinese woman, very soon, and her rather wealthy parents are asking (hinting, in this face-sensitive culture, so I think that's what it is, but it could mean something else?) where my divorced, broke parents' contribution to the marriage is, or, in lieu of theirs, mine. They've tossed a $140,000 duplex our way, a prime rental property, and a ton of financial support for their daughter. I have about $400 in the bank and an okay freelance career. Barring 10 years to save up and match that...what, exactly, can I do to prevent this from getting really, really, really awkward? A long, rambling explanation follows. [more inside]
This is something of a follow up to this question earlier this year. I've spent most of the last year working in China but haven't moved yet. Question is, Shanghai or Beijing? It's basically my option. I've spent a lot of time in both cities and both have qualities I can appreciate. What are your opinions, which city is more livable, and why.

Looking for images of old Pudong prior to development. Coming up blank. Ideally, from the late 1980s. Plus anything else you stumble across that may be in interesting. Puxi is covered, but finding in hard the other side of the river. Pics will be used in a private seminar on development.
Will be moving to Beijing and would like to have high speed reliable internet service in my apartment. We'll likely be living in one of the US or HK developed apartments along Chao Yang park. I've worked with DSL connections in serviced apartments in Beijing and Shanghai and was not thrilled with the throughput (70kbs) or reliability. The Great Firewall is not an issue as far as completely blocking sites, but I'm sure it affects transfer speeds from the US sites I'd be accessing. [more inside]
