Help a Chinese immigrant in Vancouver

A friend has just moved from mainland China to Vancouver, BC. Her English is pretty good, but not perfect (she speaks Mandarin). Her only work experience is in teaching. I'm at the other end of the country, in Ontario, and want to do what I can to help her integrate and find work, but am hindered by my location and complete lack of immigration experience/knowledge. What helpful advice, tips, and resources can you share with her?

Are computers liable for import duty?

I'm waiting to receive a used computer I bought from China (where it was made) and it is now "Inbound into Customs." Also if duty is charged, will the value be based on the declared value or...?

Travelling during National Week in China

I've got a six week sabbatical break from my job coming up, beginning in mid September. My plan is to fly to Hong Kong, and then spend some time travelling around Yunnan and Sichuan. I will be in China during the National Week holiday, which I gather is kind of a big deal in terms of hotels, planes, trains etc. Does anyone have any advice/tips on how to deal with it? Is it even going to be a problem, or will I just notice touristy places getting a little busier?
