Comic Book Communism

I'm looking for the name of a book I read back in the late 60's or early 70's. It was an illustrated, I'd almost say sequential art (that'd be comics to you and me...) book all about the Chinese Communist revolution. [more inside]

Condense a few thousand years of history into a few hundred pages?

Is there a good overview or history of China to read? Or a few books together to read on the various eras of Chinese history? It's one of the areas of the world that I know surprisingly little about but really should. Ideally, I would love to find some books that are available for Kindle. This prior AskMefi question targeted Early Chinese History. I'd also like some suggestions on 19th and 20th century Chinese history and the Communist revolution, in particular, too.

Help remembering an old quote about China

While reading about how people tend to care less about deaths that do not directly impact them, I came across a quote that I'm hoping someone here would recognize. I can only remember the basic idea of the quote. It is presented to a European audience, I think sometimes in the last century or two, but not in our recent era, as follows: If all of China were swallowed up whole, Europeans would go on with life without much change. This is all I can remember.

Things to do in Guilin, China.

We're now on our China trip (thanks for the tips in our last question,), and are looking for specific suggestions on things to do in the Guilin area that weren't covered there. Extra points for off-the-beaten-path suggestions. We're definitely interested in beginner to intermediate hikes, bike rides, and boating. We also would love to see more rural sites, and the most spectacular scenery possible, but have been having trouble finding specific info on the area.

What should we do for two weeks in China?

My boyfriend and I will be visiting my dad in China for two weeks at the end of October, beginning of November. I've been twice before (my dad has lived there for the past 12 years), but this will be my boyfriend's first time. We'd like a good mix of city and rural areas, and are tentatively planning four days in Shanghai, four in Beijing, four in Guilin, and four in Yunnan. However, we're open to other suggestions, so what do you think? Too much time in one place, not enough in another? Is there another must-see area? What should we do while we're in those places? Any ideas are welcome!

I'm Leaving For China With No Plans: I Need Some Plans!

My son wants me to ride trains and hike with him, starting this weekend, all over China. He says he wants to leave Beijing (I arrive exhausted on Thursday night) on Sunday and go, over the next 17 days, to visit Xuchang, Xi'an, Chengdu, Jiuzhaigou, Kunming, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Guilin, Yangshou, Suzhou, and FengHuang; then back to Beijing so I can go home. Can we do it? We have no itinerary. Shouldn't this be pared down? Where should we go? What travel websites can I use on my iPhone or at internet cafes? How can I find cheap airfare within China, with no advance reservations, and do it on the fly? This post is as "quick and dirty" as is my planning. Now, I have to get back to packing ultralight for monsoon territory. I'm too old for this, but am excited! [more inside]
