While reading about how people tend to care less about deaths that do not directly impact them, I came across a quote that I'm hoping someone here would recognize. I can only remember the basic idea of the quote. It is presented to a European audience, I think sometimes in the last century or two, but not in our recent era, as follows: If all of China were swallowed up whole, Europeans would go on with life without much change.
This is all I can remember.

We're now on our China trip (thanks for the tips in our last question,
), and are looking for specific suggestions on things to do in the Guilin area that weren't covered there. Extra points for off-the-beaten-path suggestions. We're definitely interested in beginner to intermediate hikes, bike rides, and boating. We also would love to see more rural sites, and the most spectacular scenery possible, but have been having trouble finding specific info on the area.

This-is-a-long-shot-filter: I'm just beginning to do a study of Muslims in China, a subject I find extremely interesting. Specifically, I'm looking at the Hui minority, histories of violence among Muslims in China, current ethnic tensions between the Hui and other ethnic identities, and conflict between the Hui and the Chinese government. Looking for personal accounts, opinions, and thoughts that can lead me further into research.

My boyfriend and I will be visiting my dad in China for two weeks at the end of October, beginning of November. I've been twice before (my dad has lived there for the past 12 years), but this will be my boyfriend's first time. We'd like a good mix of city and rural areas, and are tentatively planning four days in Shanghai, four in Beijing, four in Guilin, and four in Yunnan. However, we're open to other suggestions, so what do you think? Too much time in one place, not enough in another? Is there another must-see area? What should we do while we're in those places? Any ideas are welcome!

My son wants me to ride trains and hike with him, starting this weekend, all over China. He says he wants to leave Beijing (I arrive exhausted on Thursday night) on Sunday and go, over the next 17 days, to visit Xuchang, Xi'an, Chengdu, Jiuzhaigou, Kunming, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Guilin, Yangshou, Suzhou, and FengHuang; then back to Beijing so I can go home. Can we do it? We have no itinerary. Shouldn't this be pared down? Where should we go? What travel websites can I use on my iPhone or at internet cafes? How can I find cheap airfare within China, with no advance reservations, and do it on the fly? This post is as "quick and dirty" as is my planning. Now, I have to get back to packing ultralight for monsoon territory. I'm too old for this, but am excited!

Some years ago I bought a pair of Chinese t-shirts from a charity shop. Plain white short sleeved with a slightly scooped neck. The neck and sleeves where sewn (felled) rather than knitted and the fabric was thinner than the usual western t-shirt. The small label was woven and stated something like Two Chickens Brand. They were ubiquitous in the Mao cap era of China but, try as I may, I cannot trace an internet supplier or a bricks and mortar in the UK/London.

I might possibly be going to Nanjing in July of this year and would love to stay with a family instead of a hotel. I will be there for two weeks and would be fine with paying or trading a service (perhaps teaching English or Spanish) for the stay. Does a site exist that might have listings like this or is there another way to seek this out?
