How many hours of labor do you estimate it takes to produce a high-quality Chinese cloisonne vase, 12 inches tall? A couple of these vases are owned by the school that I teach at, and I would love to be able to tell my students a ballpark figure of how much effort goes into producing these luxury goods--from making the metal base, to adding wire lines, to filling it with enamel, to firing, to final polishing. Our vases are polished to a high gloss, and they have an intricate geometric pattern in the background. There is no area in the background with a gap of more than 2 mm. The foreground consists of well-rendered flowers and foliage. Any thoughts about such objects would be most appreciated.

China Valves Technology (ticker: CVVT) has plummeted this year largely due to suspicion of fraudulent activity and reporting practices. I have read generic accusations on various websites, but have not seen anything specific. Then I ran across this article supposedly "redeeming" them. http://seekingalpha.com/article/294624-china-valves-technology-online-due-diligence-indicates-legitimate-structure?source=marketwatch So I thought I would ask the metafilter community if they had any knowledge involving this company. Do you believe that this is a legitimate investment or is it just another Chinese fraud? Thank you for your time and expertise. Have a great day.

I want to buy products from Chinese and Indian suppliers to sell on my popular web site. I don’t have any buying experience and I’ve been trying to learn as much as I can. But so far I haven’t been able to find anyone with actual experience who is willing to advise me (and I have tried SCORE). And the advice I’ve found on the net has been too general and often not very credible. I also want to buy merchandise that is a little unusual, like stepper motors and CNC controllers. I’ve used services like DHgate and IndiaMart to identify potential vendors but I have no clue about what to ask and how to word my inquires so I don’t sound completely clueless. At this point I just want to find out if I can buy products at prices that will make selling them worthwhile. And if I do go ahead I want to start with some small orders. Will most manufacturers accept $500 to $1000 orders for items that cost $20-$50? Do you have any other advice you can give me?

I'm working on a project in China at the moment aimed at getting luxury European and North American brands to install themselves at a new five-star hotel and luxury shopping plaza in one of China's many rapidly growing second-tier cities. The location is excellent and the nimiety of demand and feasibility studies we have conducted show this clearly. We need to convince key decision makers not only in Paris, Milan, London and New York but also here in Shanghai. But how to contact the right people? [more inside]

Applying for a z-visa to teach English in China, what should I know/be aware of as I go through the process? [more inside]
I live and work in China and, in addition to my regular job, help a fierociously intelligent nineteen-year-old girl with her English twice a week. I don't so much teach her as talk to her and attempt to develop her debating skills. Though not perfect, her English is very good so discussion is often deep with a tendency to take unpredictable twists and turns. We've taken to reading thoughtful articles together and then discussing the main points in addition to noting down any unfamiliar vocabulary. I'd be grateful if Hivemind could suggest some provocative, not overly academic articles that could serve this purpose. I'm running out of ideas. [more inside]
